| VM 90 (4/2007): Ruby-red. Aromas of raspberry, currant, licorice and spicy oak. Suave on entry, then broad and fine-grained in the middle, with a sneaky intensity to the flavors of raspberry and spice. A tad medicinal and dry on the back half, finishing with fine tatnnins and some chocolatey oak. (Another bottled sampled in New York was darker in color and blacker in its aromas and flavors, with a more pronounced mineral and violet character, but came off as a bit musclebound and hard-edged. This bottle, which I rated 89+?, was in need of time to harmonize.) |

| VM 93+ (11/2023): The 2021 Syrah was picked later than the 2020. It contains more whole bunches than prior vintages (65%) and matured for 18 months, 90% in Stockinger foudre and Stockinger demi-muids. This is quite concentrated on the nose with dark berry fruit, bay leaf and white pepper, perhaps less floral than some of its peers. The aromatics feel tightly coiled at the moment. The palate is smooth and harmonious on the entry, with a fine structure. It is compact at the moment with cracked black and white pepper and garrigues notes flourishing toward the persistent finish. Much more backward than expected, I would cellar this for three to five years before cracking open as it's a serious Syrah. (Drink between 2027-2048). Neal Martin. |

| WA 98 (10/1998): Packaged in a thick, antique glass bottle, the 1940, which had considerable heavy sediment, revealed a slightly cloudy amber color. A spectacular nose of roasted coffee, fruitcake, spice, honey, and nuts soared from the glass. In the mouth, this wine revealed extraordinary fullness, richness, and lively, tangy acidity, which holds its considerable weight and massiveness together. The spicy, honeyed character continues in the mouth, and while there is no doubt considerable residual sugar, the zesty acidity is refreshing and uplifting. This is a provocative and compelling Muscat that must be tasted to be believed. Moreover, I suspect it will last for 20 more years. |

| WA 95 (3/2016): The 2013 Tinto (the Estate, flagship red here) is a blend of 58% Touriga Nacional, 35% Touriga Franca, 5% Tinta Barroca and 2% Tinta Roriz, aged for 18 months in 225-liter Allier barriques (80% new and 20% second use). It comes in at 14% alcohol. Adding a layer of concentration and more power to the Meandro, its sibling reviewed this issue, this has a wonderfully elegant feel, while adding some surprising pop and power to the gripping and lingering finish. Let's not forget the part where it provides wonderful intensity of flavor on the finish. It's just delicious this year, without ever being candied, sweet or obvious. Subtle at times, yet intense and persistent, this perfectly balanced beauty should hold well. It has some things to prove in the cellar, but it should develop well. As time goes on, I'm expanding drinking windows, but let's remain a little on the conservative side. Sourced from vines averaging 45 years in age, there were 2,050 cases produced. |

| WA 91 (9/2021): The 2012 Reserva is mostly Vallado's field blend from old vines. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This is part of our vertical this report. Young, fruity and rich, this also has developed a bit of what seems to be a slightly high-toned nuance, which constrains my enthusiasm a bit. It is balanced and very approachable overall, though. Ultimately, it tastes good too. Unlike some earlier powerhouses, this (like the predecessor in the vertical, the 2011) is quite easy to drink today. This, like most of the rest, is entitled to an expansion of the end-date drinking window, but I don't know that this will be as likely to reward long aging, as most of the older vintages are. It drinks nicely now. I can't see a reason to hold it, even though it will hold and probably longer than indicated, at that. |

| WA 95 (11/2020): The 2018 Pintas is a field blend (over 40 grapes, but the dominant grapes are Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional) from old vines (around 90 years) aged for 20 months in 30% new French oak. It comes in at 14.8% alcohol. Big, fruity and textured with velvet, this is a sexy Pintas with good balance, intensity of flavor and plenty of concentration. The oak needs to be pulled in over a couple of years, but this delicious Pintas is hard to resist even now. It should develop well and improve over the next decade (or two). How well it develops will determine its final ceiling. It is already a star. The question now is how brightly it will shine. I'm not sure it will outdo the recent vintages, but it should hang with them just fine. |
