| VM 95 (8/2021): Vibrant ruby. Highly perfumed, smoke- and mineral-accented cherry liqueur, blackberry, candied licorice and cracked pepper scents show superb clarity and a hint of violet. Stains the palate with sweet dark berry preserve, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors that display unlikely energy for their depth. The mineral and floral notes drive a strikingly long, penetrating finish that features resonating cherry, floral and mineral notes. (Drink between 2025-2035.) Josh Raynolds. |

WA 94 (9/2018): The 2017 Morgon Vieilles Vignes is superb, wafting from the glass with notes of red cherries, cassis, candied peel and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with juicy acids, a deep core of fruit and refined tannins. Thévenet routinely produces one of the most elegant, classy expressions of Morgon, and the 2017 vintage is no exception. In ideal conditions, this will develop in bottle for a decade or more. VM 93 (10/2019): Deep, glistening garnet. Pungent aromas of ripe dark berries, violet, incense and smoky minerals pick up a spicy quality as the wine opens up. Velvety and concentrated but lithe as well, offering sappy black raspberry, boysenberry, spicecake flavors and building florality. Shows superb clarity and finishes extremely long and sappy, with supple tannins melding smoothly into the wine's densely packed fruit. In keeping with the vintage, this is a deeper version of this wine than usual but those who know the domaine's style will detect its signature elegance. (Drink between 2022-2029). Josh Raynolds. |
