WS 96 (7/2006): Very beautiful aromas of flowers, ripe fruit and crushed blackberries. Full-bodied yet refined. Layers of tannins. Balanced. Montosoli is a great Brunello vineyard. Best after 2008. 1,500 cases made. WA 87 (12/2006): Altesino is located in a spectacular spot that affords views of Montosoli, the hillside from which the estate makes its most famous Brunello. In past years I have enjoyed this producer’s wines very much, often purchasing them for my own cellar. Unfortunately the estate’s 2001s have proven to be very inconsistent in my multiple tastings of the wines. I can only recommend the Montosoli, with the caveat that my notes refer to Lot # 5343 (indicated on US Importer Leonardo LoCascio’s back label). There are four bottlings of the Brunello and two of the Montosoli, and bottles of both wines purchased in Europe have shown significant variation. Altesino’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli (Lot#5343) presents notes of chocolate, toasted oak, earthiness and super-ripe fruit on a full-bodied, ample frame with modest complexity. Underyling notes of mustiness and greenness convey an overall impression of rusticity that is out of character for Altesino, making this Brunello one of the vintage’s few notable underachievers. This was the best of the three bottles of this wine I have tasted so far. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. VM 70 (8/2006): Good deep red. Nutty oak, coffee and pineapple on the nose. Juicy, oaky and tightly wound; dense but cool. Began rather stern but grew sweeter with aeration, finishing with substantial tannins that avoid dryness. A second sample showed aromas of nectarine and coconut and finished leathery and dry. This wine is outside my parameters for Brunello. |

WA 96 (1/2009): Deep, dark sensations of smoke, tar and scorched earth emerge from the powerful 2001 Solaia. This fresh, vibrant offering is packed with dense ripe fruit. This is an especially rich, heavy style of Solaia that lacks the subtlety and grace of the finest vintages. Still, in 2001 Solaia is a more complete wine than Tignanello. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. WS 93 (10/2004): Masses of coffee and blackberry character in this youthful wine. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins, loads of fruit and excellent wood. Big and juicy, with a long, long finish. A fine wine. Needs time. Best after 2007. 7,500 cases made. |

WA 93 (4/2006): The 2001 Tignanello is an object lesson in how to make Cabernet work with Sangiovese, the two varieties balancing and enhancing one another in admirable symbiosis. (The percentage of Cabernet, in fact, was reduced from the previous 20% to 15% in this vintage, an important sign - I hope - of how the wind is blowing.) A blackish ruby, its perfectly focused plum and cassis fruit, given an additional complexity by notes of sweet herbs and saddle leather, is fully and completely shaped in flavors of impeccable volume, roundness, and depth, caressing and powerful and with an additional power on the close which promises another 15 years of gratifying drinking. VM 92 (1/2009): In 2001 Tignanello captures a super-concentrated and dense expression of fruit that has been achieved with some loss of aromatic complexity and overall finesse. This is a super-ripe style with tons of dark fruit, smoke and toasted oak in a heavily extracted style that veers on excess. There is remarkable power here, but not the level of balance that is typical of the very finest vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016. Antonio Galloni. WS 91 (10/2004): Loads of blackberry, coffee and olive aromas. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, subtle yet rich finish. A fine Tignanello that shows reserve and class. Best after 2007. 27,500 cases made. |

| VM 96 (4/2012): The 2001 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is a great choice for readers who can be patient. Freshly cut flowers, mint, spices and violets are some of the many notes that flow from this structured, powerful Barolo. The 2001 remains virile and incredibly youthful in its personality. Sweet balsamic notes develop in the glass, adding considerable depth and nuance. The San Giuseppe is a jewel of a wine with a bright, bright future. Today it is stunningly beautiful. WS 96 (10/2005): Aromas of blackberries and licorice with hints of oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and lots of ripe fruit as well as smoky oak. A rich and very long wine. A massive beauty. Best after 2008. 1,250 cases made. WA 95 (10/2006): My favorite wine has typically been the Ciabot Mentin Ginestra, which comes from vines planted at 400 meters with a south to southeast exposure, which gives the wine its characteristic explosive aromas. The Pajana comes from a vineyard at 300 meters in altitude, with a due south exposure, and as would be expected, it is less perfumed on the nose, but rounder and lusher on the palate. Clerico’s Percristina is produced from old vines planted in the south-facing Mosconi cru. Stylistically I find it more similar to the Pajana, though the older vines give this wine a more concentrated profile along with heady, exotic aromas and flavors. The richly-colored 2001 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra opens with an unmistakable Ginestra nose of menthol, eucalyptus, spices and minerals. It is dense and structured, showing plenty of ripe dark cherry fruit, licorice, tar and toasted oak flavors, with exceptional length and substance on the palate, and closing with an inviting, beautiful, lingering finish that makes you want to come back to the wine time and again. Clerico’s Ciabot Mentin Ginestra was one of the first Barolos that really captivated my attention and for me it remains this producer’s most representative wine. It is a superb achievement and one of the highlights of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. VM 94 (12/2004): Good medium red. Exotic, exhilarating aromas of sappy red berry liqueur and woodsmoke. Wonderfully sweet on entry, then superripe and liqueur-like in the middle palate, with an utterly suave texture over firm supporting spine. Finishes impressively long and sweet, with serious but noble tannins. There's nothing especially austere or forbidding about this extremely rich Barolo. |

Barolo Bussia |

| VM 89 (10/2006): Always a reliable introductory bottling, the 2001 Barolo Bussia, a lively ruby, presents an aromatic and floral nose, with notes of spices, mint and minerals. It displays clean, focused flavors of ripe red fruit on a soft, medium-bodied frame, finishing with good length and freshness. This classy and refined Barolo is made from a blend of parcels in the Bussia zone that are less well-exposed, and therefore not considered ‘cru' level quality. (Drink between 2013-2016). Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95 (12/2004): Medium red. Quintessential Barolo perfume: minerals, tobacco, underbrush, tar, licorice, gunflint. Then wonderfully rich and seamless in the mouth, with superb concentration and purity of flavor. Spicy red fruits emerged with aeration. Comes across, atypically, as less clenched in the early going than the Colonnello and strikingly complex from the outset, but this is nonetheless extremely young. Finishes with extremely suave tannins and vibrant lingering fruit. Great wine in the making. WS 94 (10/2005): Loads of plum, berry and licorice character with hints of new wood. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, rich finish. Beauty here. Tight and compacted. Lots going on here. Give it time. Best after 2008. 800 cases made. WA 92 (10/2006): A dark-toned hue of ruby with violet highlights, the 2001 Barolo Cicala suggests new oak and spices on the nose, then opens to reveal a very complete and multi-dimensional wine that offers sensations of ripe dark cherries, minerals, menthol, tar, licorice and violets wrapped around a structured, masculine frame. A very fresh and long finish makes this a superbly well-balanced and beautiful wine. The Cicala cru gives wines of power and intensity owing to its poorer and dryer soils which contain more iron, as well as the vineyard’s south to south-east exposure. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. |

| VM 91 (10/2006): The 2001 Barolo Colonnello, a rich ruby, displays a superbly elegant and deep nose of spices, prunes and violets. It is a very soft and feminine Barolo featuring flavors of delicate black cherry and plum fruit with notes of tar and minerals that emerge as the wine sits in the glass. “The soils here are sandier, and Colonnello is more typical of the style of wine found in Barolo and La Morra,” explains Conterno. (Drink between 2013-2019). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 99 (10/2008): The 2001 Barolo Riserva Monfortino flows from the glass with stunning depth and purity. This seamless, elegant Barolo caresses the palate with incredible persistence as layers of aromas and flavors develop in the glass. Stylistically it is very much like the 2001 Cascina Francia, only with more intensity, depth and sheer volume. Monfortino has always had power to spare, but in 2001 it is also incredibly elegant, something that previous vintages have only acquired with significant bottle age. This is a towering, majestic Monfortino that will rightfully take its place among the very finest Monfortinos ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2041. WS 95 (5/2008): Offers sweet plum and sultana aromas, with hints of citrus fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, with soft, sweet tannins and cedar, cappuccino and sweet fruit flavors. Long and gorgeous. Hard not to drink now. Best after 2012. 855 cases made. VM 94-96 (12/2007): (still in barrel) Good medium red with amber highlights. The nose offers incredible early perfume of strawberry, truffle and rose petal. Then deep, creamy and complex on the palate; one chews this liquid! Incredibly youthful wine with Outstanding concentration, sweetness and sap. The strawberry and truffle flavors are complicated by a meaty nuance. Shows much more cut than the 2000. Finishes with Outstanding building length. |

WA 93 (4/2004): The 2001 Montiano, 100% Merlot, offers the luxuriously sweet and expansive nose which has always characterized the wine. Full of plum, raspberry, and dark chocolate scents, along with a dense, deep, and velvety palate, it is full and round, with the super-polished tannins which make it one of Italy’s touchstone Merlot bottlings. Drink: 2005-2018. WS 90 (3/2005): Gorgeous aromas of blackberry, coffee, and currant follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a ripe fruit finish. Very good indeed. Pure Merlot. A solid Montiano, though I like the 2000 better. Best after 2006. 6,660 cases made. |

VM 97 (12/2013): At twelve years of age, the 2001 Vigna d'Alceo remains a behemoth. Even with all of its power, the 2001 is also incredibly elegant, refined and polished. The flavors and textures still haven't fully filled out, as is the case with the vintages of the 1990s, so readers will have to be patient. Still, all of the elements are in place for the 2001 to be an even more spectacular wine than it already it is in another few years. The 2001 isn't quite as structured as the 1999, but it is a touch more refined and floral. Antonio Galloni. JS 97 (11/2015): This has always been a great Super Tuscan. It's made on hillsides from cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Very fresh and bright with raspberry and sage aromas and flavors, it's full-bodied, firm and bright. Racy and refined. It's just starting to drink perfectly now. WA 95 (4/2004): There can be few doubts that the 2001 D’Alceo is one of the greatest wines in the distinguished history of the estate, something which becomes immediately evident from the deep ruby color as well as the sweet, focused, and weighty nose with its important notes of ripe berry fruit, sage, rosemary, and classy oak. Rich, dense, deep, and layered, the sensual and potent palate is sheer joy, the maximum in fused power and elegance. |

$237.15 |

|
| |
| VM 96 (4/2012): Luciano Sandrone's 2001 Barolo Le Vigne is fresh, vibrant and totally impeccable. Flowers, mint, minerals and juicy red berries are some of the many nuances that come to life in the 2001 Le Vigne. The wine gains volume and shape with time in the glass. Seemingly endless layers of fruit flesh out on the mid-palate and finish. Hints of leather, spices, licorice and flowers add further complexity on the close. This is a fabulous showing from Luciano Sandrone. Although Sandrone's Cannubi Boschis gets most of the attention, the reality is that in many vintages Le Vigne is very much its equal. The ability to blend fruit from several parcels, an approach rarely used today, has plenty of merits. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 88 (10/2006): The 2001 Barbaresco Gallina, a dense, fully-saturated ruby, opens with a perfumed nose showing flowers, sweet spices, truffles and over-ripe fruit. Every time I taste this wine I am surprised by the lack of fleshiness and depth it exhibits on the mid-palate, although the oak, while still present, seems to have begun to integrate. VM 93+ (12/2004): Moderately saturated medium red. Highly perfumed aromas of rose petal and marzipan ("like Serralunga Barolo in its perfume," notes Rivetti). Then powerful, vibrant and deep, with an almost Barolo-like density and plushness. Thanks to acidity a half-gram higher than that of the other 2001 Barbarescos the wine maintains superb vinosity and perfume in the mouth, and carries its high alcohol gracefully. Finishes with building, noble tannins and terrific persistence. WS 93 (12/2004): Lovely berry, spice and aged cedar on the nose. Full-bodied, with deep fruit on the palate that needs to be drawn out. Tannic and structured. This needs bottle age. Best after 2008. 250 cases made. WA 90 (10/2006): The 2001 Barbaresco Valeirano is convincing in its overall balance. Massively rich, it offers penetrating aromas of truffles, minerals, vanilla, tar and mint. On the palate it is dense and chewy with generous amounts of dark, backward fruit and a long, fresh finish punctuated by exuberant, youthful tannins. It is the most austere of the three La Spinetta Barbarescos. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2013. |
