WS 96 (10/2005): Aromas of blackberries and licorice with hints of oak. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and lots of ripe fruit as well as smoky oak. A rich and very long wine. A massive beauty. Best after 2008. 1,250 cases made. WA 95 (10/2006): My favorite wine has typically been the Ciabot Mentin Ginestra, which comes from vines planted at 400 meters with a south to southeast exposure, which gives the wine its characteristic explosive aromas. The Pajana comes from a vineyard at 300 meters in altitude, with a due south exposure, and as would be expected, it is less perfumed on the nose, but rounder and lusher on the palate. Clerico’s Percristina is produced from old vines planted in the south-facing Mosconi cru. Stylistically I find it more similar to the Pajana, though the older vines give this wine a more concentrated profile along with heady, exotic aromas and flavors. The richly-colored 2001 Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra opens with an unmistakable Ginestra nose of menthol, eucalyptus, spices and minerals. It is dense and structured, showing plenty of ripe dark cherry fruit, licorice, tar and toasted oak flavors, with exceptional length and substance on the palate, and closing with an inviting, beautiful, lingering finish that makes you want to come back to the wine time and again. Clerico’s Ciabot Mentin Ginestra was one of the first Barolos that really captivated my attention and for me it remains this producer’s most representative wine. It is a superb achievement and one of the highlights of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. VM 94 (12/2004): Good medium red. Exotic, exhilarating aromas of sappy red berry liqueur and woodsmoke. Wonderfully sweet on entry, then superripe and liqueur-like in the middle palate, with an utterly suave texture over firm supporting spine. Finishes impressively long and sweet, with serious but noble tannins. There's nothing especially austere or forbidding about this extremely rich Barolo. |

| VM 89 (10/2006): Always a reliable introductory bottling, the 2001 Barolo Bussia, a lively ruby, presents an aromatic and floral nose, with notes of spices, mint and minerals. It displays clean, focused flavors of ripe red fruit on a soft, medium-bodied frame, finishing with good length and freshness. This classy and refined Barolo is made from a blend of parcels in the Bussia zone that are less well-exposed, and therefore not considered ‘cru' level quality. (Drink between 2013-2016). | VM 91 (10/2006): The 2001 Barolo Colonnello, a rich ruby, displays a superbly elegant and deep nose of spices, prunes and violets. It is a very soft and feminine Barolo featuring flavors of delicate black cherry and plum fruit with notes of tar and minerals that emerge as the wine sits in the glass. “The soils here are sandier, and Colonnello is more typical of the style of wine found in Barolo and La Morra,” explains Conterno. (Drink between 2013-2019). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 99 (10/2008): The 2001 Barolo Riserva Monfortino flows from the glass with stunning depth and purity. This seamless, elegant Barolo caresses the palate with incredible persistence as layers of aromas and flavors develop in the glass. Stylistically it is very much like the 2001 Cascina Francia, only with more intensity, depth and sheer volume. Monfortino has always had power to spare, but in 2001 it is also incredibly elegant, something that previous vintages have only acquired with significant bottle age. This is a towering, majestic Monfortino that will rightfully take its place among the very finest Monfortinos ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2041. WS 95 (5/2008): Offers sweet plum and sultana aromas, with hints of citrus fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, with soft, sweet tannins and cedar, cappuccino and sweet fruit flavors. Long and gorgeous. Hard not to drink now. Best after 2012. 855 cases made. VM 94-96 (12/2007): (still in barrel) Good medium red with amber highlights. The nose offers incredible early perfume of strawberry, truffle and rose petal. Then deep, creamy and complex on the palate; one chews this liquid! Incredibly youthful wine with Outstanding concentration, sweetness and sap. The strawberry and truffle flavors are complicated by a meaty nuance. Shows much more cut than the 2000. Finishes with Outstanding building length. |

WA 93 (4/2004): The 2001 Montiano, 100% Merlot, offers the luxuriously sweet and expansive nose which has always characterized the wine. Full of plum, raspberry, and dark chocolate scents, along with a dense, deep, and velvety palate, it is full and round, with the super-polished tannins which make it one of Italy’s touchstone Merlot bottlings. Drink: 2005-2018. WS 90 (3/2005): Gorgeous aromas of blackberry, coffee, and currant follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a ripe fruit finish. Very good indeed. Pure Merlot. A solid Montiano, though I like the 2000 better. Best after 2006. 6,660 cases made. |

WS 96 (12/2007): Medium ruby red color. Very opulent aromas of plum, roses and spice. Full-bodied, with exotic fruit flavors and layers of silky tannins. Amazing fruit. Breathtaking. Hard not to drink now. Even better than I remember.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best after 2010. 1,080 cases made. VM 93 (12/2000): Deep red-ruby. Pungent, minerally aromas of red berries and dark chocolate; distinct high-toned hint of surmaturite Sweet, thick and sappy; a huge, broad, headspinning Barolo that offers terrific vinosity and insinuating red berry flavors. Really extravagantly rich wine. WA 93 (4/2007): The 1997 is rich and alcoholic on the nose, displaying aromas of very sweet fruit with a slightly evolved character. It is super-rich and concentrated on the palate, offering intense sweet fruit and mineral flavors, but with notable balance for the vintage, closing with a final lingering note of sweetness. This is drinking well now and should last at least another ten years. |

Barolo Le Vigne |
$237.15 |

|
| |
| VM 96 (4/2012): Luciano Sandrone's 2001 Barolo Le Vigne is fresh, vibrant and totally impeccable. Flowers, mint, minerals and juicy red berries are some of the many nuances that come to life in the 2001 Le Vigne. The wine gains volume and shape with time in the glass. Seemingly endless layers of fruit flesh out on the mid-palate and finish. Hints of leather, spices, licorice and flowers add further complexity on the close. This is a fabulous showing from Luciano Sandrone. Although Sandrone's Cannubi Boschis gets most of the attention, the reality is that in many vintages Le Vigne is very much its equal. The ability to blend fruit from several parcels, an approach rarely used today, has plenty of merits. Antonio Galloni. |

|
| |
| VM 88 (10/2006): The 2001 Barbaresco Gallina, a dense, fully-saturated ruby, opens with a perfumed nose showing flowers, sweet spices, truffles and over-ripe fruit. Every time I taste this wine I am surprised by the lack of fleshiness and depth it exhibits on the mid-palate, although the oak, while still present, seems to have begun to integrate. (Drink starting 2013). Antonio Galloni. |

Barbaresco Vigneto Valeirano |
$119 |

|
| |
VM 93+ (12/2004): Moderately saturated medium red. Highly perfumed aromas of rose petal and marzipan ("like Serralunga Barolo in its perfume," notes Rivetti). Then powerful, vibrant and deep, with an almost Barolo-like density and plushness. Thanks to acidity a half-gram higher than that of the other 2001 Barbarescos the wine maintains superb vinosity and perfume in the mouth, and carries its high alcohol gracefully. Finishes with building, noble tannins and terrific persistence. WS 93 (12/2004): Lovely berry, spice and aged cedar on the nose. Full-bodied, with deep fruit on the palate that needs to be drawn out. Tannic and structured. This needs bottle age. Best after 2008. 250 cases made. WA 90 (10/2006): The 2001 Barbaresco Valeirano is convincing in its overall balance. Massively rich, it offers penetrating aromas of truffles, minerals, vanilla, tar and mint. On the palate it is dense and chewy with generous amounts of dark, backward fruit and a long, fresh finish punctuated by exuberant, youthful tannins. It is the most austere of the three La Spinetta Barbarescos. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2013. |
