| WA 90 (2/2011): Informed by fruit from some moderately steep slopes in the Fruhlingsplatzchen and Halenberg as well from the cool Rosenberg behind the village, the Schonlebers’ 2009 Riesling trocken Mineral manages to maintain a delightful sense of buoyancy even at 12.5% alcohol. This displays a deep sense of salinity one often associates with quartzite-rich sites, and which here threads its way invigoratingly and saliva-inducingly through a stream of lemon, grapefruit, white peach, and red berries. Cooling high-toned suggestions of mint and oregano add to the sense of refreshment in this long-finishing Riesling that ought to perform well for at least the next 4-5 years. |

WA 94 (2/2011): The Schonleber 2009 Monzinger Fruhlingsplatzchen Riesling Spatlese fascinatingly mingles luscious citrus, salted caramel, nut paste, white peach, Persian melon, subtly tart red raspberry, and diverse mineral nuances. Musk, goose fat, and vaguely pheromonic notes add animal intrigue. Even at 70 grams of residual sugar, the sweetness is supportive rather than obtrusive, and one consequence is a mere 9% alcohol and concomitant sense of levity. Creamy in texture, yet packed with pure, juicy refreshment, this finishes with alluring length and a compulsive urge to take the next sip and the next. Frank Schonleber opines that the tension and nuances in this wine were slow to emerge in its elevage and also will be from the bottle. Certainly we can look forward to at least two decades of kaleidoscopically interactive, thought-provoking delight. VM 90 (1/2011): Delicate aromas of pineapple, quince and herbs. The palate offers a fine interplay of ripe citrus fruits and salty, refreshing minerality. A refined and expressive finish give this wine stature. Very drinkable already. Joel B. Payne. |
