| VM 94 (5/2022): The NV (2016) Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Enfers is a pretty soft, open-knit Champagne from Olivier Collin. Smooth contours and mid-weight structure make the 2016 pretty easy to drink right out of the gate. Hints of orchard fruit, mint, baked apple tart and dried flowers grace the clean, caressing, finish. Bright saline and floral notes linger. This release is based on 2016 and spent 48 months on its lees. Disgorged: March, 2021. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 95 (11/2023): A bright straw hue, the 2016 Champagne Terre De Vertus comes from several parcels in Vertus, and offers up detailed, ripe aromas of custard, lemon curd, and ripe apple, with a richness about it. Full-bodied, it’s long on the palate, with lovely density, and it has a saline touch although it’s ripe throughout. No dosage was added, but you probably wouldn’t guess. It’s ripe up front and finishes fully dry, with a mouthwatering finish. I enjoy this wine a lot and would allow it another year or two, but it’s in a beautiful place already. Drink 2024-2044.
VM 95 (5/2023): The 2016 Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Terre de Vertus 1er Cru is fabulous. Comprised of 100% Chardonnay from two mid-slope parcels in Vertus, it is perfumed and exotic, with striking aromatics. This cuvée straddles the line between still and sparkling wine. Lime, mint, white pepper and chalk lend tons of high-toned character. The 2016 is really quite compelling. Bottled with no dosage. Disgorged: November 1, 2023. |

WA 98 (3/2021): The 2016 Blanc de Blancs La Bolorée has turned out especially well, unwinding in the glass with notes of crisp white peach and pear mingled with white flowers, mirabelle plums, blanched almonds and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and incisive, it's deep and concentrated, with prodigious reserves of chalky dry extract, racy acids and a long, precise finish. This is a serious La Bolorée, built for the long haul—even if, like all of Bouchard's wines, it delivers plenty of pleasure straight out of the gates.
JD 98 (12/2025): The 2016 Champagne Blanc De Blancs La Bolorée is made from Pinot Blanc and has a light green tinge that could possibly come from the year. From vines grown in clay, limestone, sand, and chalk, planted in 1960, the wine has structure and focus. It’s still young, but it's demonstrating clarity with its notes of key lime. There’s no almond at this stage. I would never guess this is Pinot Blanc by blind tasting, except that it’s meant for those who appreciate earthy qualities. It's all mineral and soil initially, but as it opens up, it changes dramatically, revealing fresh pineapple notes, while the mousse is secondary but still very present. VM 97 (11/2020): The 2016 Blanc de Blancs La Bolorée is a Champagne of soaring intensity. Old Pinot Blanc vines on limestone yield a Champagne infused with striking mineral-laced energy. Green apple, pear, white flowers, crushed rocks and white pepper all race out of the glass. La Bolorée needs a few years in bottle to be at its best, although exercising that sort of patience in front of one of the world's most iconic wines is nearly impossible. Let me just say, when I want to serve my most cherished bottles for a special occasion, La Bolorée is often at the top of the list. Zero dosage. Disgorged: April, 2020. (Drink between 2023-2031). VM 93 (6/2024): Vilmart’s 2016 Grand Cellier d’Or is perfect after a long day of tastings. I continue to be impressed with the 2016s, especially as early views of this vintage were so mixed. Light and airy, with lovely floral and citrus inflections, the 2016 is in fine shape. All the classic Vilmart signatures of finesse are very much in evidence. What a beautiful wine this is. WA 93 (1/2022): Disgorged in July 2020, the 2016 Brut Premier Cru Grand Cellier d'Or unwinds in the glass with inviting aromas of orange oil, green orchard fruit, freshly baked bread, blanched almonds and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and elegant, it's pretty and seamless, with a charming core of fruit, bright acids and a delicate pinpoint mousse. |
