BH 96 (6/2018): ( from 60+ year old vines and the vineyard is a whopping 4 ha monopole within Perrières.) A highly restrained nose requires considerable swirling to liberate the beautifully well-layered aromas of mineral reduction, white rose, spice, citrus and a wisp of exotic tea. Like the Pucelles there is excellent richness and detail and much more minerality-suffusing the almost painfully intense finale that is breathtaking in its persistence. This is a gem of a Puligny 1er and in 2016 is a lovely blend of power and finesse. In sum, this is a knockout. Drink 2028+. Don't miss! Outstanding! VM 93-95 (9/2017): (13.3% alcohol with 4.5 grams per liter acidity; cropped at 38 hectoliters per hectare, from vines up to 80 years of age): Bright light-medium yellow. Utterly pure scents of stone fruits, apricot, nuts and honeysuckle. Rich, deep, silky and moderately saline but also powerful and backward, displaying terrific precision and purity in the mouth. A superb, classic Clos de la Mouchère: utterly plush and seamless without being heavy or over the top. Boillot noted that he will slowly replant these very old vines in a series of tranches over the next 15 to 25 years. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 96 (6/2018): (100% from Aloxe fruit in Le Charlemagne.) A distinctly smoky nose combines notes of mineral-reduction with those of green apples, lavender and spice. The super-intense and well-muscled flavors seem to be built on a firm base of minerality before culminating in an explosively long finish. Note well that like the Montrachet, this presently taciturn effort is very clearly built-to-age and is going to require a minimum of 7 to 8 years of cellaring first and reward far longer. Drink 2031+. VM 93-96 (9/2017): (75% new oak; 4.4 grams per liter acidity; from vines in Aloxe, which Boillot picked last in 2016 before starting on Pinot Noir): Bright light-medium yellow. Subtly complex, musky aromas of peach, caraway seed, nutmeg, mace and hazelnutty lees. At once densely packed and penetrating, with a stony citric pungency giving precision to the seamless middle palate and cutting through the wine's texture. Wonderfully pure and energetic for this cuvee, finishing tactile and unflagging, with terrific citrus lift. This has the palate-staining length and structure for a slow and graceful evolution in bottle; it's also the only 2016 here that struck me as tannic, but then classic Corton-Charlemagne typically shows structure more like a red wine. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 91-94 (6/2018): Background wisps of the exotic can be found on the white and yellow orchard fruit, mandarin orange and Granny Smith apple-scented nose. The mouth feel of the middle weight flavors though is cool and retained with a really lovely purity of expression on the highly complex, well-balanced and hugely long finish. This is terrific and a wine that will need at least a few years of cellaring first. (Drink starting 2024). |

| BH 90-92 (6/2018): There is a whiff of natural exoticism to the spiced tea, pear, apple and floral-scented nose. The racy, intense and gorgeously textured medium weight flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the saline-inflected finale. The mouth feel is at once caressing and punchy while offering a beguiling natural sweetness. Good stuff. (Drink starting 2022). |

WA 96 (2/2025): I hadn't drunk the brilliant 2016 Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et les Vieilles de Chavigne, the inaugural vintage of this ne plus ultra cuvée from Guffens's holdings in Chavigne, for several years, so I was delighted to find that it is beginning to hit its stride. Offering up aromas of pear, ripe citrus fruit, sourdough, dried white flowers and iodine, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, its textural attack segueing into a layered, intensely concentrated and pungently mineral palate, concluding with a long, saline finish. As well as it begins to drink today, it will certainly be better still in a decade. BH 91 (10/2018): More yellow than green. Ripe peach, hazelnut and a whiff of smoke on the nose; conveys a Côte d'Or-like richness. Fat, full-bodied, deep wine with captivating musky sweetness perfectly countered by firm acidity and a solid spicy spine. In its thick, bulletproof fruit and energy, this wine reminded me of a Kistler Chardonnay. Made entirely from free-run juice (and a crop level of about 34 hectoliters per hectare), this beauty finishes with superb length. Incidentally, Guffens planted the Juliette vines in 2003 (this cuvée also includes older vines), and he told me that they were stunted by the extreme dryness of that growing season and have always produced low crop levels. VM 90 (6/2019): The 2016 Mâcon-Pierreclos Le Chavigne Juliette et les Vieilles comes from a small vineyard on very poor stony soils (Juliette) mixed with the older vines from Chavigne, matured in 50% new oak. It has a crisp lime, citrus peel and crushed stone scented nose, the terroir coming through very clearly with hints of yellow flower developing with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced entry, a fine bead of acidity, harmonious and poised with green apples and citrus lemon mixed with ginger on the waxy-textured finish. This is a very involving, cerebral Mâconnais that will merit ageing if you cannot resist it in its youth. Tasted at Farr Vintners Verget/Guffens-Heynan tasting. (Drink between 2019-2029). Neal Martin. |

| BH 91-93 (10/2017): (from a .53 ha parcel planted in 1962 and matured in mostly older oak but there is a small percentage of new wood.) An exceptionally pure array offers up airy and elegant aromas of essence of pear, iodine, white flower and plenty of mineral reduction. The seductive yet powerful and punchy broad-shouldered flavors brim with an intense minerality while displaying excellent length on the saline, citrus and wood-inflected finish. This is really quite sophisticated though it too will need at least a few years of cellaring to realize its full potential. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| VM 91 (9/2018): Ripe stone fruits complemented by nutty nuances on the nose. Plush and fine-grained, with its stone fruit flavors currently overshadowed by nuts, earth and salty minerality. Rich and mouthfilling for young Corton-Charlemagne but I don't find quite the verve or grip shown by a barrel sample a year ago. Incidentally, the acidity here is 3.8 grams per liter, as with the Cailleret. Stephen Tanzer. |
