| BH 88 (1/2006): Here the nose is slightly fresher with riper, fuller and more complex aromas and sappy, dusty and punchy flavors that are a bit more precise and while this is absolutely delicious, it is also altogether serious and delivers first rate finishing complexity. A really lovely effort that offers excellent overall balance and made in more of an old school style than the rest of the range. (Drink starting 2011). |

BH 90-93 (1/2005): (from a .74 ha parcel of 35 year old vines) Stylistically, this is quite similar to the Suchots but the flavor profile delivers more size, weight, punch, power and structure with wonderfully deep, muscular and sappy flavors plus there is real lift on the notably long finish. This is reference standard stuff, particularly so for the vintage as no one makes better Malconsorts. Drink 2013+. Outstanding! VM 89+ (3/2006): Medium red. Aromas of blackberry, minerals, licorice and fresh herbs; showed a torrefaction quality as it opened in the glass. Broad, rich and chocolatey but not overly sweet, with flavors of cherry pit, cola and minerals. Conveys an impression of solid extract but comes across as rather backward and tight today, owing to its mineral component and its firm acids and tannins. |

WA 92 (8/2005): While slightly reductive, the 2003 Clos St.-Denis admirably displays its enormous concentration and depth of fruit. Copious quantities of dark berries are intermingled with notes of herbs, licorice, and red cherries in its complex, and lengthy character. Projected maturity: 2008-2017. VM 90+ (4/2006): Good full, deep red. Musky, decadent aromas of red fruits, flowers, truffle and sweet oak. Concentrated, superripe and broad, with atypical weight for this cuvee Rather firm and unforthcoming today. Very horizontal on the finish, with fine tannins coating the palate. BH 89 (1/2006): There is better freshness here with a nose of mocha and very ripe plum that leads to flavors that are fresh, intense and beautifully textured as the sap buffers the firm and ripe tannins. This is a big wine by the usual standards of Clos St. Denis with ample power and volume culminating in a palate staining finish and noticeable warmth. Drink 2013+. |

| BH 91-94 (1/2005): The aromas are a bit riper and mix both red and black pinot fruit notes as well as a subtle hint of minerality. The flavors however are a striking mix of size and finesse as there is incredible volume here yet this dances across the palate even as the incredible amount of sève coats the mouth. Wow, this is potentially at another level as there is depth, breadth and huge length yet everything remains in impeccable balance. In short, this is one of the very top 1ers of the vintage. Drink 2015+. Don't Miss! Outstanding! |

BH 88-91 (4/2005): A wonderfully seductive nose of plum and spicy black cherry framed in obvious wood lead to very earthy, sweet and intense, gorgeously complex medium full flavors and excellent length. The overall impression is not as elegant as that of the Couchereaux but there is perhaps more depth of material here. A choice. Outstanding! Drink 2013+. VM 88+ (4/2006): Medium red. Nose shows an almost candied ripeness, with hints of licorice root and smoky oak. Densely packed, broad and dry, with notes of strawberry, underbrush and mushroom. This liqueur-like wine is still rather bound up, but I would like to have seen a bit more verve. |

JS 96 (6/2016): Domaine Armand Rousseau is part of the gold standard for Burgundy lovers, especially in Hong Kong. Yesterday I tasted reds from his two top vineyards from the extremely hot vintage of 2003. I wasn't expecting to find truly great wines, but Rousseau's Chambertin was just that. It showed crazy aromas of shitake mushrooms and dried cherries and strawberries. It was full body with velvety tannins and a long and intense finish. Lots of fruit but not too much. It was so integrated and beautiful for the vintage. Drink or hold. BH 93 (4/2017): (opened from personal storage). Somewhat curiously given the natural coolness of Chambertin, this seems noticeably riper than the '03 Clos de Bèze (see herein) with notes of mocha, spice, earth and markedly ripe black currant aromas. There is excellent size, weight, concentration and power to the big-bodied and extract-rich flavors that coat the mouth before culminating in a lightly mineral-inflected, velvety and as the nose suggests, mocha-tinged finish. This is more 2003 in basic character than the Bèze though as is usually the case, it's more structured as well though with 45 minutes in a decanter, this too could be drunk now with pleasure. That said, I would be inclined to give this at least 6 to 10 more years first though please be aware that this will be capable of holding for decades. Multiple, and consistent, notes save for the fact that some examples seem to display more prominent wood than others. Drink 2023+. VM 93 (4/2006): Medium red. Aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoked meat, with a positive earthy nuance. Dense and sweet, with a wonderfully silky, thick texture and solid mineral underpinning. This is thicker and broader than the Clos Saint-Jacques but more backward. Mounts slowly toward the back and builds impressively, finishing with a hint of medicinal austerity. This is quite fresh for the year, and the tannins are fine. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92 (8/2005): Red cherries, super-ripe raspberries, fresh blackberries and spices make up the aromatic profile of the 2003 Chambertin. Medium to full-bodied and silky-textured in both the attack and mid-palate, this wine exhibits Outstanding amplitude and depth. Assorted sweet black fruits are interspersed with a myriad of spices in its complex character. Its extensive finish displays copious quantities of firm, slightly rough tannin. Projected maturity: 2009-2020. BH 91-93 (1/2005): A deeply pitched yet wonderfully elegant nose of black pinot fruit, game even slightly animale and subtle underbrush notes complement perfectly balanced, pure and powerful flavors that pack plenty of punch and superb length. This is a big if not massive wine with a dusty, lingering finish of real style and grace. At the moment, this is actually more refined than the Bèze, which is usually not the case at this early stage. This should age well for years and it will require at least a decade to really begin strutting its stuff. Drink 2013+. Don't miss! |

WA 94 (8/2005): Boasting a nose of great ripeness and freshness, the 2003 Bonnes Mares offers aromas of waxy black fruits and spices. Medium to full-bodied, it resembles liquid silk in both its attack and mid-palate. Luxurious and sensual, this highly expressive wine coats the palate with black cherries and dark raspberries whose effects linger in its tannin-packed, slightly dry finish. Projected maturity: 2009-2020. VM 91 (4/2006): Medium red-ruby. Blackberry, violet, mocha and bitter chocolate on the slightly roasted nose. Huge, sweet and expressive, with extravagantly rich flavors of currant, blueberry, chocolate and spices. Quite velvety and sensual for this wine, thanks to its unusually fat, broad texture. Finishes with suave but serious tannins. BH 90 (1/2006): (from a 2.7 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south west portion of the vineyard). A penetrating and exceptionally expressive nose of mocha, plum and spice notes adds nuance to the violet and blueberry aromas and this ripe character continues onto the sappy, mouth coating and supple flavors that are so dense that there is a real weight and opulence on the cassis and black cherry liqueur finish. This is particular in style and will not be for everyone. Drink 2015=. |
