JD 93 (8/2021): The 2019 Syrah Originals offers a more cool-climate vibe in its peppery herbs, gamey meat, flowers, and black olive-driven aromatics. It hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great overall amount of texture and richness balanced by good freshness. Made from 100% Syrah that was only 50% destemmed, aged 20 months in neutral oak, this is a classic Ballard Canyon Syrah to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years or so. (Drink between 2021-2029).
VM 92 (10/2021): The 2019 Syrah Originals is a powerful, earthy wine. Its more brawn than finesse with the Originals, a wine that has plenty of size and power. Game, leather, scorched earth, gravel and intense black-fleshed fruits all build. I am not convinced the Originals has the balance to truly stand on its own, but it is an intriguing wine. WA 92 (3/2022): The 2019 Syrah Originals Estate is scented of red and black currants with touches of cast iron, smoked meat, citrus peel and dried flowers. The palate is chalky, fresh and easy to drink, with iron and game meat accents on the long finish. |

JD 93 (8/2022): All Mourvèdre from a selection of own rooted vines, the 2021 Mourvedre Pliocene offers up bright red and blue fruits as well as notes of incense, leather, and spices. It's loaded with character and is medium-bodied and elegant, with terrific overall balance as well as outstanding length. Drink this character-filled beauty over the coming 7-8 years as well. (Drink between 2022-2030).
VM 93 (8/2022): Bottled shortly before my visit, the 2021 Mourvèdre Pliocene is fabulous. It offers terrific fruit purity and aromatic presence. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, white flowers and chalk abound. This fresh, vibrant Mourvèdre is absolutely delicious and also full of character. Then again, this plant material originates from Enz and was planted own-rooted at Stolpman. (Drink between 2024-2033). Antonio Galloni.
WA 93 (12/2022): Medium garnet, the 2021 Mourvèdre Pliocene is scented of blueberries, cranberries, garrigue and bergamot with touches of underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is supple and fresh with a core of floral fruits and a long, ethereal finish. It's spicy, inviting and approachable! 405 cases were made. |
