WA 90+ (6/2008): The 2006 Champoux Vineyard was aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak. Pain grille, spice box, black currants, black cherry, and blackberry aromas are followed by a smooth textured wine with layers of fruit, savory, spicy flavor, and impeccable balance. It will evolve for 4-6 years and drink well through 2026.

WA 92 (10/2011): The deep purple-colored 2008 Champoux Vineyard is composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Merlot aged in 50% new French oak. Sandalwood, cinnamon, a hint of chocolate, violets, and blackberry aromas inform the nose of a rich, substantial, layered offering that mandates 3-4 years of additional cellaring. This suave effort will deliver prime drinking from 2014 to 2028.

VM 91 (12/2012): (a 92/8 blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc): Good bright ruby-red. The aromas and flavors of black cherry, asphalt and licorice show a porty ripeness. Very sweet, plush and seamless, with a slightly high-toned quality but good acidity to frame the mid-palate. Carries its sweetness to the finish, which features substantial tongue-dusting tannins. Stephen Tanzer.

VM 92+ (12/2013): (84% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 6% cabernet franc; aged in 50% new oak): Good bright ruby-red. Precise aromas of blueberry, blackberry, licorice and violet. Very ripe blackberry, mineral and sweet oak notes are complicated by a strong saline element. Very tactile, concentrated wine with sound acidity and a firm tannic spine to support extended aging. I'd give this a good seven or eight years in the cellar before pulling the cork. Owner/winemaker Dave Larsen bottles his cabernets during the second July after the harvest. Stephen Tanzer.

VM 92 (11/2015): Deep, bright red-ruby. Sexy aromas of black raspberry, currant and spices complicated by musky espresso and mocha notes. Suave and smooth on entry, then rich, layered and deep in the middle palate, displaying a sexy saline complexity to its seamless, highly concentrated flavors of red and dark berries, spices, herbs and milk chocolate. Fills the mouth without leaving any impression of excess weight. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and lingering red berries and flowers. A lovely, flavorful Bordeaux blend from an outstanding vintage. These wines are underpriced for their quality. Stephen Tanzer.

Ciel du Cheval Vyd. Proprietary Blend |

WA 91 (10/2011): A step up is the 2008 Ciel du Cheval, sourced from one of eastern Washington’s more highly regarded sites. Made up of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 9% Merlot, it was aged in 50% new oak. Brooding black fruits, wood smoke, violets, and earthy underbrush notes set the stage for a dense, structured wine that will require 2-3 years of additional cellaring to display its full potential. This well-balanced, lengthy effort offers a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2023.
