| VM 89 (5/2010): Bright red-ruby. Redcurrant, blueberry, tobacco, tar, licorice and menthol on the nose. Sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with good intensity and lift to the flavors of black cherry, currant and mint. Builds nicely on the back end, finishing with substantial but suave tannins and a lightly candied character. Sweeter and deeper than the 2006 version. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 91 (5/2012): Good dark red. Vibrant nose offers cassis, blueberry, licorice, coffee and cocoa powder lifted by a violet topnote. Supple, pliant and fruit-driven, with enticing sweetness to the pure flavors of dark berries and chocolatey oak. At once livelier and more generous than the 2008 version, offering considerable early appeal. This seamless cabernet finishes with dusty tannins and lovely chocolatey persistence. |

| VM 90+ (5/2010): Bright ruby-red. Musky black raspberry, chocolate, mocha and truffle on the nose. Sweet on entry, then a bit youthfully clenched in the middle, with a slightly edgy quality to the flavors of black raspberry, pepper, herbs and spices. Not as pliant or creamy at this early stage as the 2006 was a year ago. This structured, firmly tannic wine finishes with a light saline nuance. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 88 (6/2014): (75% grenache, 23% mourvedre and 2% syrah): Medium red. Good peppery, herbal lift to the aromas of strawberry, raspberry and spices. Supple, savory and dry, in a rather gentle style, with a slightly intrusive greenness to the red berry, licorice and spice flavors; could use a bit more definition and verve. Finishes with dusty, even tannins. |

Kaley Elizabeth Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon |

WA 95+ (12/2015): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Kaley Elizabeth is sourced exclusively from the Tierra Roja Vineyard in eastern Oakville. It sits below and adjacent to Dalla Valle and is in the same neighborhood as the Backus Vineyard of Joseph Phelps and the Rudd estate. This is a high-priced zip code for sure. Jeff Ames produced this wine and named it after his daughter. And it's a tiny cuvee, of only about four barrels, or 100 or so cases. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after 18 months in oak, the wine has beautiful, earthy/loamy soil and forest floor notes intermixed with blueberry and blackberry fruit, true terroir character, a full-bodied mouthfeel and beautiful purity of fruit and depth. The wine is rich, full and capable of evolving for 20 to 25+ years. This wine builds incrementally, and while at first there seems to be incredibly delicate and well-integrated sweet tannin, as the wine sits in the glass the big structure of this wine comes forth. This is a beauty and should age magnificently. WS 90 (12/2015): Dense and dusty, with loamy earth elements and crushed rock minerality to the cedar, herb and dark berry flavors. Ends with a cedary oak aftertaste and a raw texture, but also good length. You will have to adjust to the tannins. Drink now through 2024. 102 cases made. |

| WA 96+ (10/2016): A killer effort from Jeff Ames is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Kaley Elizabeth. One hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon from clone 7, this is a beauty, aged in a combination of new Taransaud and Darnajou cooperage. Inky, opaque blue/purple in color with notes of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, creosote, charcoal and graphite, the wine is full-bodied, multilayered, deep, powerful, concentrated and moderately tannic. Give this wine 5-8 years of bottle age and drink over the following 35-40+ years, as it is a keeper. |

JD 97 (1/2020): Coming from the Tierra Roja vineyard in Oakville and also spending 27 months in oak, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Kaley Elizabeth (there’s 4% Cabernet Franc) offers a meaty, exotic bouquet of bloody blueberry fruits, gamey meats, iodine, blood orange, and violets. With full-bodied richness and depth, it’s flawlessly balanced, has fine tannins, and a seamless, sexy texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. In short, it’s another magical wine from winemaker Jeff Ames! Drink bottles over the coming 20-25 years or more. (Drink between 2020-2045). VM 96 (1/2020): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Kaley Elizabeth, from Tierra Roja, Oakville, is a sumptuous, exotic wine. A dollop (7%) of Cabernet Franc adds a striking perfume that gives this wine notable aromatic depth to match its exotic, alluring personality. Chocolate, espresso, licorice, dried herbs, menthol all flesh out in this flamboyant, sumptuous Cabernet Sauvignon from Rudius. Silky tannins and plush fruit give the 2016 tons of immediacy and appeal, even at this early stage. This is such a gorgeous wine. (Drink between 2022-2036). Antonio Galloni. WA 93+ (9/2019): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Kaley Elizabeth, blended with about 6% Cabernet Franc, has a deep garnet-purple color and opens with pronounced blackcurrant pastilles, baked blackberries and plum preserves notes with hints of sautéed herbs, damp soil, underbrush, espresso and licorice. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers loads of savory and baked black fruit layers with plenty of herbal sparks and a chewy frame, finishing long and savory. |

Knockmore Cabernet Sauvignon |

WA 96 (12/2015): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill - Knockmore comes from a small parcel on Pritchard Hill directly across the street from Ovid and backed up to the well-known Colgin IX Estate Vineyard. As Jeff Ames says, this is "a fantastic neighborhood." The wine, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, was also bottled unfined and unfiltered after 18 months in about 70% new French oak. This is another small cuvee of only about 100 cases. Fabulous flavors of black raspberries, blackcurrants and spring flowers jump from the glass of this wine, which seems to be a characteristic of many of the same wines in the neighborhood. Deep ruby/purple in color, it's sexy, opulent, lush and much in keeping with the 2012 style. This multi-dimensional, layered, velvety textured wine is loaded. There's not a hard edge to it, and the impression is one of extravagance and lavish, rich fruit. It's already showing burgeoning complexity and should continue to develop even more fragrance and compelling attributes over the next 15-20 years. This is a beauty. WS 93 (10/2015): A gorgeous Cabernet, pure, rich and juicy, with layers of cassis, blackberry, light mocha and savory earth. Most impressive on the finish, where the flavors maintain their core richness and focus. Drink now through 2029. 100 cases made. |

Panek Vyd. Cabernet Sauvignon |
$59 |

| |
WS 93 (11/2013): Pure and rich, featuring vivid dark berry, mocha, dried herb, cedar, black licorice and subtle mint notes. Firms nicely, offering a deep and supple texture, with a long, lingering finish. Drink now through 2026. 190 cases made. VM 91+ (5/2012): Deep red with ruby highlights. Very dark aromas of cassis, licorice, licorice and violet complicated by a saline nuance and notes of herbs and tobacco leaf. Higher-pitched and less evolved than the Napa cabernet, showing less early sex appeal and pliancy. But this fresh, firm wine has the concentration and structure to reward several years of cellaring. Jeff Ames, who is also winemaker for Kenward Family Wines, has taken his own cabernets to a higher level with these 2009s. WA 89+ (10/2013): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard comes from rocky alluvial soils just north of St. Helena. It is a richer, fuller Cabernet displaying a brooding inky/purple color, abundant acidity, moderate tannin and a firm, Bordeaux-like structure. Impressively pure, rich and medium to full-bodied, it will benefit from more time in the bottle, and should keep for 12-15 years. |

| WA 94 (12/2015): Highly impressive, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard (readers should also check out the tasting notes from this vineyard and the wines made by Pulido-Walker and Rivers Marie) is another unfined, unfiltered, beautiful wine from Jeff Ames, who has the Midas touch with seemingly any varietal. Deep ruby/purple with notes of spice box and blackcurrants followed by a generously fruity, full-bodied, layered wine with relatively sweet, but noticeable tannin, a big, lofty, full-bodied mouthfeel, a fragrance that is hard-to-resist and a long, long finish. This was fermented with indigenous yeast and aged in about 70% new French oak prior to bottling. Ames is a big believer of Darnajou barrels, sort of the Mercedes Benz of cooperage along with Taransaud and a handful of other small coopers. Drink it over the next 20+ years. |
