JS 93 (7/2012): Relaxed and pretty with with Christmas cake and dried fruit character with hints of meringue. Full body, with fine tannins and a berry, spice and milk chocolate character. Subtle and delicious. Complex. So delicious now but better in two or three years. VM 91+ (10/2011): Good bright dark red. Tangy candied fruits, cocoa powder, flowers and licorice on the lively nose. Juicy, sharply delineated and vibrant, with lovely but youthfully subdued berry flavors. Distinctly younger today than the 2007 version and tighter on the back end, with somewhat tougher tannins. This will need patience. |

JS 96 (6/2013): Ripe strawberry and black cherry on the nose, with hints of flowers. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and lots of fruit, vanilla and even white pepper. Long and rich. This is really amazing. VM 93 (11/2009): Good deep red. High-pitched aromas of blackberry and bitter chocolate; more like the basic Marcenasco in its fruit quality than the Conca. There's a penetrating quality and enticing minerality to the pure dark berry flavors; this, too, strikes me as Burgundian. Finishes with the densest tannins and the greatest length of these three bottlings, but the tannins are fine-grained and arrive late, coating the teeth. A very good example of the grand cru quality of the Rocche. WA 93 (10/2009): The 2005 Barolo Rocche shows lovely richness and depth in its dark fruit, flowers, herbs and French oak. The Rocche comes together beautifully in the glass, as the tannins soften a touch and the wine gains clarity. High-toned, floral aromatics accompany the fruit through to the long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. |

WA 93+ (10/2011): The 2007 Barolo Rocche is also a huge wine for this site. Layers of dark fruit, spices, menthol and mocha explode from the glass in this large-scaled, expansive Barolo. The Rocche shows marvelous intensity and seamless power from start to finish. Silky, polished tannins frame the dramatic, sweeping finish. The intensity of the mid-palate tapers off just a touch on the close, but that may be a function of the wine's youth. If the finish fleshes out, the Rocche could very well merit a higher score in the future. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. VM 93+ (11/2011): Good deep red. Redder fruits on the nose than the Conca, accompanied by licorice, spices and earth; very ripe but tight. Then big, rich and ripe but very young on the palate, with a suave texture and considerable finesse to the complex flavors of mentholated dark fruits, spices and chocolate. The huge, mounting finish features velvety tannins and terrific persistence. JS 93 (5/2011): Lots of dried mushroom and plums on the nose. Full body, with spicy character, dark chocolate and dried berries. Velvety texture. Best after 2014. |
