Castelli-Knight Ranch Syrah |
$55 |
2 |
|
| |
WA 94 (12/2003): The 2002 Syrah Castelli-Knight Ranch is a black beauty. No wimpish wine at 16.9% alcohol, it is made from very low yields, and crushed in open top small bins, the alcohol is totally concealed by the wealth of fruit and intensity. From a cool hillside vineyard with a northeast exposure, it exhibits an inky/purple color as well as aromas of roasted meats, black currants, and blackberries. It is a muscular, big, powerful Syrah that keeps it all together with good intensity and a structured feel. This sensational 2002 requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should age nicely for 12-15 years. WS 93 (4/2004): Fully ripened, with a rich, concentrated core of blackberry, wild berry, pomegranate and huckleberry, it firms up and exhibits dusty oak, fresh earth, mineral, sage and spicy nuances, only to have the rich fruit return on the finish. Chewy tannins are there too, making it a good candidate for a year or so in the cellar. Drink now through 2012. 253 cases made. VM 92+ (6/2004): (16.9% alcohol, with a pH of 3.9; from a northeast-facing vineyard in a warmer area) Saturated ruby. Pure aromas of black fruits and bitter chocolate, with a distinctly peppery component. Dense, sweet and superconcentrated; a wine of extravagant breadth. Like an essence of black fruits. Superripe and high in pH but somehow full of life. Finishes with big, strong, tongue-coating ripe tannins. "My Brune," notes Mahle. |

Cuvee Keltie Syrah (1.5 L) |
$150 |
1 |
|
| |
| WA 94 (12/2008): The 2006 Syrah Cuvee Keltie, a 100% whole cluster Syrah that sees no new oak, is a serious, backward offering meant for long-term aging. Its dense purple color is accompanied by notes of roasted meats, ground pepper, damp earth, truffles, underbrush, and forest floor. This superbly complex, full-bodied wine possesses high tannins as well as surprisingly fine acidity despite an elevated technical pH of 3.93. Drink this intriguing, complex Syrah over the next 10-12 years. |

Griffin’s Lair Syrah (1.5 L) Cracked Wax Capsule |
$125 |

|
| |
WA 92 (12/2003): From a cool site on the Sonoma Coast comes the deep ruby/purple-colored 2002 Syrah Griffin’s Lair. Wild blueberry and floral aromas give it a distinctive style. More acidity is noticeable, and the wine is less massive and more restrained than several of its siblings. An earthy terroir character permeates its blue and black fruit flavors. The finish reveals moderate tannin as well as crisp acidity, resulting in vigor and liveliness on the palate. Give this 2002 1-2 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 10-12. WS 92 (2/2005): An open-knit, juicy, fleshy style, with layers of ripe stewed plum, pepper, spice and beef notes, it holds its focus through the finish, ending with a dash of white pepper and lots of dark berry fruit and toffee flavors. Best from 2006 through 2012. 138 cases made. VM 91+ (6/2004): (from a south-facing vineyard in a cool, breezy spot, planted on coarse sand and gravel) Good full, saturated ruby. Liqueur-like aroma dominated by candied blackberry. At once cool and superconcentrated, with penetrating black fruit flavors complicated by mint, pepper and licorice, as well as wilder smoke and bacon notes. Here the tannins come across as a bit rough and in need of a couple years of bottle aging. Along with the Obsidian bottling, this has the lowest pH among these 2002 syrahs, at 3.76. |

Griffin’s Lair Syrah (1.5 L) |
$150 |

|
| |
| WA 95 (12/2005): Lovers of bacon fat, roasted meat juices, herbs, pepper, and spice will enjoy the extroverted, exuberant 2003 Syrah Griffin’s Lair. Superb richness and density along with loads of lard and bacon fat characteristics dominate this complex, aromatic, full-throttle Syrah. It can be drunk now or cellared for 7-8 years. |

Kobler Family Syrah |
$55 |

|
| |
VM 91+ (5/2006): Good bright, deep ruby. High-pitched aromas of red berries, white pepper, brown spices and wild herbs, lifted by a note of rose petal. Juicy and penetrating; not a fleshy style but intensely flavored and light on its feet, with almost pinot-like floral lift to its berry, spice and pepper flavors. This wine, from a cold spot, is one of the lowest in alcohol of Pax's 2004 releases, at 14.6%. Finishes juicy and firmly tannic. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90+ (12/2005): The 2004 Syrah Kobler Family Vineyard (90% Syrah and 10% Viognier) reveals a fragrant, northern Rhone-like perfume of rose petals and creme de cassis, tart acidity, and a big, rich, chewy finish. It could easily pass for a Cote Rotie in a blind tasting. |

Obsidian Vyd. Syrah (1.5 L) |
$200 |

|
| |
WA 96 (12/2005): From Knight’s Valley, the 2003 Syrah Obsidian (named for the area’s Obsidian soils) boasts a dense blue/purple color in addition to big, opulent, concentrated, heady aromatics, massive body, and abundant amounts of blackberry fruit intermixed with licorice and flowers. It’s a gorgeous Syrah that needs a bit more time in the bottle to strut its stuff. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. VM 93 (6/2005): ( from a high, rocky vineyard rich in volcanic deposits from Howell Mountain Full, deep ruby. Aromatic, somewhat exotic nose features blackberry, purple flowers, flint, tar, licorice and smoke. Comes across as fatter than the Kobler syrah but not quite as precise. But the sweetness of the powerful, deep black fruits is almost shocking. This has terrific depth of flavor and an exotic, liqueur-like aspect. Has the sweet fruit to buffer its big, broad tannins. This may be even better than the excellent '02 release. |

Obsidian Vyd. Syrah |
$55 |

|
| |
WA 96+ (12/2007): The 2005 Syrah Obsidian Vineyard is from Knight’s Valley. This is steep hillside vineyard stuff with a dense, dark purple color, a phenomenally rich nose of brioche, acacia flowers, blackberry, and blueberry jam intermixed with some white chocolate and perhaps hints of fig and truffle. The wine is spicy, full-bodied, incredibly opulent, and thick, even unctuously textured, with great purity and richness. Moreover, the glycerin and viscosity cover up some huge tannins. This is an amazingly big, thick wine, but it still cascades over the palate like a waterfall. This wine should come into its own in several years and drink well for 10-15. VM 94 (6/2007): Inky ruby. A huge, room-filling bouquet of dark cherry, blackcurrant, candied violet and licorice offers enormous sex appeal and great clarity. Lush, inky and powerfully built, with impressively energetic dark berry and cherry compote flavors. Very fine tannins add support but this is almost too big for its pants. Lovely boysenberry and mulberry flavors are given focus by subtle minerality, with the finish showing Outstanding focus and persistence. I was really struck by the mix of ripeness and freshness here. WS 88 (3/2008): Spicy, with savory, beefy pepper, sage and leather flavors that veer to dryness, ending with a loamy earthiness. Loads of tannins. Best from 2009 through 2013. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 625 cases made. |

2018 |
Sonoma Hillsides Sonoma County Syrah |
$45 |

|
| |
VM 96 (1/2020): The 2018 Syrah Sonoma-Hillsides is gorgeous. Inky dark fruit, spice, licorice and dried herbs all flesh out with a bit of coaxing. At this stage, the 2018 is remarkably primary, but there is tremendous intensity and richness waiting to emerge more fully. Although the 2018 doesn't quite have the aromatic breadth and layers of the 2016, it is a superb, vivid wine that Pax fans will want to own. The Sonoma-Hillsides is a blend of fruit from Castelli-Knight Ranch, Griffins Lair and Nellessen. The grapes are crushed by foot, using 100% whole clusters, and undergo carbonic maceration, an approach that works so well with this fruit. Aging is done in concrete. (Drink between 2020-2028). Antonio Galloni. JD 92 (12/2020): A step up over the 2017, the 2018 Sonoma has a classy, Saint Joseph-like vibe in its ripe blue fruits, lavender, violets, ground pepper, and earthy, gamey aromas and flavors. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a beautiful floral character, bright acidity, and a clean finish. This beautiful, elegant wine should drink nicely for 4-5 years. It was not destemmed and spent a short 10 months in tank prior to being bottled unfined and unfiltered. (Drink between 2020-2025). |

The Emerald Pool Alder Springs Vyd. Syrah |
$55 |
1 |
|
| |
WA 94-96+ (12/2005): The 2004 Syrah Alder Springs The Emerald Pool, from a new block of the Alder Springs Vineyard, was fashioned from fruit grown in pure volcanic/gravel soils. The result is a wine offering notes of scorched earth, smoked meats, blackberries, cassis, and flowers. With more than 16% alcohol, superb stuffing, texture, and intensity, this beauty possesses tremendous power interwoven with considerable elegance and definition. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. VM 92+ (6/2006): Saturated ruby. Tarry, raw cassis and kirsch complicated by star anise, pepper and a whiff of white fruit on the nose. Highly concentrated and densely packed, with powerful dark fruit flavors complicated by spices, pepper, minerals, burnt cinders and sexy woodsmoke. Distinctly feral wine ("the evil side of syrah," comments Mahle). Finishes with outsized tannins. |

The Terraces Alder Springs Vyd. Syrah |
$65 |
2 |
|
| |
WA 93 (12/2006): The 2004 Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard The Terraces exhibits beautiful, pure blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with smoke and toasty oak. Rich, broad, and savory with light to moderate tannin, it will drink well for 7-8 years. VM 90+ (6/2006): Saturated medium ruby. Extremely unevolved nose features some exotic suggestions of apricot, peach and spice. Powerful, firmly built and superripe, with penetrating acidity and a distinct peppery element from the fermentation with the stems. Strong in tannic acidity, notes Mahle. As ripe as this is, there's nothing heavy about it. Still, this very juicy, tight wine is distinctly edgy today and is dominated by its spine. Needs patience. |
