| VM 93 (8/2022): The 2010 Les Picasses, tasted at the winery, is available to buy from the cellar door and is such a great value; I had to find room in my bag to buy a few bottles. It is a ripe and rounded style with Worcestershire sauce and pickled plums on the nose. On the palate, it is soft and mouthfilling with a fine line of mouthwatering acidity and delightful, chalky tannin. The wine has a lovely coating but also has a sense of direction, keeping you salivating. The finish is textured and long with a fragrance reminiscent of tea leaf, tobacco and game. Balanced and long, this had slightly more focus and precision than the charming, seductive 2009, suggesting the 2010 has a longer life ahead. This is an incredible value. (Drink between 2022-2035). | VM 93 (10/2021): From a limestone-based plot on the Chinon plateau, the 2016 Chinon Les Picasses features intriguing warming spices, including garam masala, as well as piquant black cherry, all followed up with mouthwatering acidity. Like their other cuvées, it's not showy and extroverted but quiet, its joy being in its tender caress on the midpalate. It has grown up in large foudres (50hl) over a year but reveals little woody influence. The finish has fine sinew and refined chalky tannins that draw the palate out on the lengthy, tea-leaf-like and spiced finish. (Drink between 2021-2032). Rebecca Gibb. |
