WA 95 (4/2014): The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain displays a classic Howell Mountain personality of graphite, plums, black currants, forest floor as well as good minerality. A beautiful texture, full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific purity and a long finish make for a sensational, showy, flamboyant Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. VM 93 (4/2018): Dark red with ruby highlights. Maturing scents of plum, currant, cranberry, tobacco and loam are complicated by caramel and iron nuances. Plush, densely packed and compellingly rich, with moderate sweetness nicely countered by saline minerality. Finishes quite long, with a solid backbone of ripe, broad tannins; this wine is evolving nicely and already makes a very satisfying drink. This was the first vintage of this bottling to include seven of the estate's Bordeaux varieties--but not the Gros Verdot, which has never been used in the blend. (Drink between 2018-2030). Stephen Tanzer. |

| WA 95 (12/2009): The stunning 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot) is the finest Cabernet this estate has yet produced from their Howell Mountain holdings. A dense purple color to the rim as well as an exquisite bouquet of black raspberries, blueberries, camphor, creme de cassis, smoke, and crushed rocks are followed by sweet fruit, gorgeous density, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a layered, multidimensional mid-palate and length. With no hard edges, this flawless wine should drink well for 20-25 years. |

WA 94+ (12/2010): The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is comprised of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest six other grapes - Merlot, Malbec, St. Macaire (how often do you see that!), Petit Verdot, Carmenere, and Cabernet Franc - and is aged 20 months in three-fourths French oak. It has a dense purple color, a wonderful, crystalline nose of crushed rock, camphor, creme de cassis and spring flowers, and a full-bodied mouthfeel. The tannins are moderately high, but they are soft and well-integrated. This is a wine of tremendous intensity and plenty of up-side. Give this wine 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 20-25 years. VM 93 (6/2011): (81% cabernet sauvignon, along with merlot, cabernet franc, malbec, petit verdot, carmenere and St. Macaire; as with the 2004 and 2006 bottlings, this wine includes all seven varieties planted in this vineyard): Bright ruby-red. Perfumed nose offers plum, black cherry, graphite, mocha, cedar, chocolate mint and sexy toasty oak (75% new). Compellingly sweet and pliant, with a velvety texture given shape by harmonious acidity. Still a bit ungiving on the firmly tannic finish, which hints at menthol. This very rich, pure wine needs time in bottle to develop more complexity and should be long-lived. |

VM 94+ (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is all minerals, graphite and pure Howell Mountain. Layers of dark red fruit come to life in this articulate, pedigreed Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 needs another few years in the bottle, but it is already quite striking, especially with some time in the glass. Saline notes frame the long finish. The 2009 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% St. Macaire and 2% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. VM 92+ (5/2012): (aged in about 75% new oak; includes 7% malbec, 5% merlot, 5% petit verdot, 5% St. Macaire and 2% cabernet franc): Good deep bright ruby. Expressive but cool nose offers cassis, violet and mint. Suave, concentrated and spicy, with licorice, mineral and oak flavors currently holding the upper hand over the wine's fruit flavors. The first tannins show some youthful toughness and will require at least five years of patience. |

WA 96+ (12/2012): The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain covers every inch of the palate with layers of deep, rich, dark fruit. Blueberries, blackberries, violet and cloves seem to pop right out of the glass in this juicy, extroverted wine. Deceptively approachable, the 2010 has plenty of tannin lurking beneath its massive fruit. I would not be surprised if the 2010 shuts down in bottle. It is one of the deepest, inkiest 2010s I tasted from Howell Mountain. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. VM 91 (6/2013): Good bright ruby-red. Black cherry, tobacco, chocolate mint and eucalyptus on the rather oaky nose, plus a pungent note of creosote. Then nicely ripe and juicy in the mouth, with surprising sweetness and attractive floral lift to the slightly medicinal redcurrant, licorice and mint flavors. Ultimately more red fruit than black in character. Finishes with broad, fine-grained tannins and good verve. I was initially put off by the strident nose but the wine calmed down markedly in the glass. |

| VM 95 (12/2014): Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, new leather, tobacco, cloves and mocha meld together in the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. Rich, ample and textured, the 2012 is full of intensity. The contours are quite soft, though, which makes the 2012 unusually gentle and tamed for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. The radiant, explosive finish alone is hugely appealing. In 2012, winemaker Sean Capiaux used all seven Bordeaux varieties in the blend. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95+ (10/2015): Deep, inky and powerful, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a classic wine endowed with tons of regional character and personality to burn. The inclusion of all seven Bordeaux varieties in the blend adds layers of nuance and complexity. Hints of game, smoke, licorice and dark spices add nuance to a somber, brooding Cabernet Sauvignon that is going to need at least a few years to fully open up. Antonio Galloni. WA 95 (12/2015): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is O’Shaughnessy’s largest cuvee of wine, nearly 3,300 cases from her vineyard, with a final blend that is somewhat unusual - 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Carmenère, and a rather obscure one, 3% St. Macaire. Dense purple in color, with notes of mulberry, blackberry, graphite and spring flowers, the wine has great fruit, a dense, full-bodied mouthfeel, and wonderfully sweet, well-integrated tannin. The acidity is sound, the purity impressive, and the wine long and reassuring. Drink it over the next 20+ years. |

| VM 91-93 (5/2008): Good bright ruby-red. Pungent, vibrant aromas of raspberry, plum, minerals and leather; this, too, struck me as Burgundian. Lush and sweet but with terrific mineral grip and a flavor of liquefied lead pencil (the soil here is essentially volcanic ash). Very attractive combination of sweetness and minerality. Finishes long, tasty and serious, with terrific energy. A California merlot with real personality. Stephen Tanzer. |

Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon |

WA 96 (12/2009): A staggering wine of exceptional concentration, flavor dimension, and texture, the opaque blue/purple-tinged 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder boasts copious notes of smoked meats, subtle barbecue smoke, creme de cassis, charcoal, licorice, and background mountain flora. With terrific intensity as well as full-bodied power, this is a brilliant Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 25-30 years. VM 90-92 (6/2009): Deep ruby. Youthfully tight nose of blueberry, crushed stone and new leather, along with a whiff of exotic flowers. The strong leathery character currently suppresses the intense underlying flavors of crushed blueberry and lead pencil. This very backward, youthfully medicinal wine finishes with a powerful spine of rather tough tannins and will require long aging. Today I prefer the balance of the Howell Mountain examples, but this may be going through an awkward stage today. |

WA 98 (12/2010): Absolutely prodigious is the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder (500 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon off a site west of Oakville). Dense bluish purple to the rim, with a sensational nose of forest, flowers, graphite, and blueberry liqueur intermixed with creme de cassis and burning embers/charcoal, this wine has fabulous fruit, a remarkably full-bodied texture, great purity, and a finish that goes on for close to 50+ seconds. This is an awesome 2008 and one of the great wines of the vintage. It should drink well for 25+ years. VM 91+ (5/2018): Full medium ruby. High-pitched aromas of cassis, blackberry, violet and licorice convey an inky, medicinal quality. Fine-grained, juicy and penetrating, but a bit less complex and pliant today than the estate's Howell Mountain bottling. The wine's dusty, building tannins show a distinctly firm edge, blocking the wine's texture and sweetness. But this Cabernet offers terrific density without any weightiness, and I suspect it's simply in an awkward closed stage today and in need of patience. (Drink between 2022-2035). Stphen Tanzer. |

VM 94 (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder is impeccable from start to finish. It shows marvelous detail and completeness in its perfumed red berries, mint, flowers and licorice. Tar, ash and a host of other darker nuances add considerable complexity. This is a marvelous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. VM 93+ (5/2012): (100% cabernet sauvignon): Good bright ruby-red. Slightly higher-toned on the nose than the Howell Mountain offering, with sexy oak spices lifting aromas of blackberry, black cherry, licorice and bitter chocolate. Offers noteworthy intensity to its dusty spice and blackberry flavors. Fatter and sweeter than the Howell Mountain bottling. Finishes with lovely ripe tannins and building length. The tannins here make those of the Howell Mountain come off as a bit clenched. This is excellent. |

VM 97+ (12/2012): Dark red cherries, iron, crushed rocks, flowers and mint are all layered into the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder. Layers of bright underlying minerality and acidity give the 2010 much of its energy and sheer thrust. This is another exceptional wine, but readers will have to be patient. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. VM 90+ (5/2013): (nearly 100% cabernet sauvignon; this has a significantly higher pH than the Howell Mountain release: 3.79 vs. 3.61): Good bright medium ruby. Black cherry, licorice, mint and a whiff of crushed stone on the nose. Distinct purple fruit and bitter chocolate flavors are accented by a slightly raw black pepper quality. Very backward and tannic on the tight, slightly dusty finish. A bit brutal and hairy-chested. This fruit was harvested between October 22 and November 4. One hopes that the sweetness of fruit and oak I saw in this wine a year ago will come back with some bottle age. |
