| WA 91+ (6/2007): From the 2.3 acre premier cru portion of an obscure and relatively low-elevation site that is the monopole of an investment consortium, Potel’s 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Echanges is one of the few Potel wines that endured a protracted malo, finishing only in December after being transferred to tank. Aromas and flavors of salted cassis and blackberry, wood smoke, tea, narcissus, smoked meat and soy make a highly-concentrated and complex impression. The long finish here is dark and brooding in a vintage-typical way, meaty, smoky and black-fruited. This wine temporarily betrays its recent bottling following such a late malo. |

VM 89-91 (4/2004): Medium red. Expressive aromas of strawberry, raspberry and rose petal. Highly perfumed flavors of tangy red berries and flowers. Round, seamless, rather soft Charmes that gives an impression of high pH. (In fact, the volatile acidity here is the highest of these 2002s.) This needs bottling soon. BH 88-91 (1/2004): Some reduction makes it difficult to accurately read the nose though the big, robust and nicely intense flavors are rich, forward and generous, all wrapped in slightly edgy tannins and complemented by a long, delicious, warm finish. Fine if not sensational quality in a very forward style. Drink 2006-2012. |

VM 92+ (4/2004): Medium red. Reticent but highly nuanced nose offers minerals, menthol and a rose petal perfume. Thick and sweet but lively, with sappy, sharply delineated red berry and mineral flavors. Still youthfully backward, with rather tough tannins, but likely to reward six to eight years of aging. Relatively unevolved for a wine from Potel, but has the sweet, concentrated fruit to reward patience. Also tasted: Volnay Pitures, Pommard Pezerolles. BH 91-93 (1/2003): This too is presently displaying a lot of wood spice but in contrast to the Clos de la Roche, there isn't the ashy quality but more importantly, there is the weight and depth of extract to successfully integrate the wood over time. Big, intense, robust and almost aggressively tannic flavors remain strikingly well balanced and the finish lasts for minutes. A really fine effort that combines size and volume without losing its sense of elegance and finesse. Drink 2012-2020. |
