WA 95 (12/2009): The classic 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon tastes like proprietor Alfred Tesseron’s over-achieving 5th growth Pauillac, Chateau Pontet Canet moved to Napa. Bursting with creme de cassis, flower, lead pencil, and spice characteristics, it is a dense, pure, full-bodied wine with a terrific texture. This is a gorgeously harmonious, seamless Cabernet Sauvignon with awesome concentration as well as aging potential. Drink it now and over the next 25 years.

WA 96 (12/2010): I would love to taste the spectacular 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon in a blind tasting with recent vintages of the famed Pauillac, Pontet-Canet. After spending 16 months in 100% new French oak, it offers an opaque purple color along with classic notes of creme de cassis intermixed with subtle burning ember, charcoal and oak aromas. The glorious perfume is accompanied by a full-bodied, stunningly concentrated, multilayered wine with spectacular length as well as a silky personality. It can be drunk now or cellared for two decades or more. It’s a tour de force!

WA 93 (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as luscious and beautifully balanced. Bright red fruit, flowers and spices are some of the notes that flow from the glass in this seductive, radiant Cabernet Sauvignon. The supple, silky finish is impossible to resist. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

WA 92 (10/2013): The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa offers notes of creme de cassis, licorice, charcoal and toasty oak in a spicy, medium to full-bodied, pure, upfront, drinkable style, especially for a 2010. This beauty should continue to age nicely for a decade or more.

WA 92 (10/2014): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon shows lots of Pauillac-like crème de cassis, cedar wood, forest floor and fruitcake. There’s a touch of white chocolate, a nice influence of spicy and the wine is full-bodied, fleshy and opulent. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

WA 92 (10/2015): The inky purple 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon displays plenty of classic creme de cassis and lead pencil shavings along with some licorice, charcoal and vanilla notes. It is full-bodied and opulent, with good integration of sweet tannin and bright acids. This wine is still young but approachable, and certainly capable of evolving for 10-15+ years.

JD 93 (12/2017): The base 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon isn’t far behind the Wight Vineyard release and offers similar blue and black fruits, gorgeous notes of graphite, lead pencil and cedar, full-bodied richness, and ripe, present tannin. Slightly more firm and tannic than the top cuvee, it will benefit from short-term cellaring, and keep for 10-15 years. I loved both the 2014s and 2015s from Lewelling, but have to give the nod to the 2015s, which have that extra dimension. (Drink between 2018-2033)

JD 95 (12/2017): The base 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is no entry level wine and offers incredible purity and elegance in its blue fruits, cassis, graphite, and violet-tinged aromas and flavors. This beauty has classic, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon richness, polished tannin, no hard edges, and a great finish. Tasting just like a slightly toned-down version of the Wight Vineyard (Bordeaux lovers will probably prefer this cuvee as it’s slightly more classic in style) it’s a beautiful, layered, multi-dimensional Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the coming 15+ years. I loved both the 2014s and 2015s from Lewelling, but have to give the nod to the 2015s, which have that extra dimension.

JD 94 (1/2019): Starting with the larger production (but we're only talking 700 cases), the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon comes all from the estate and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in 70% new French oak and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. This sensational effort's purity and balance is something to behold, offering a smorgasbord of creme de cassis, blueberries, tobacco leaf, lavender, damp forest floor, and spring flower-like nuances that develop beautifully with time in the glass. Full-bodied, multi-dimensional, concentrated yet weightless, it's a stunning Napa Cabernet Sauvignon that does everything right. Drink it any time over the coming 15+ years.

WA 98 (12/2009): Even more profound is the nearly perfect 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard. The finest Cabernet I have ever tasted from this estate, it has everything the Napa Cabernet possesses, along with a few more layers, slightly more aromatic and flavor intensity, and a finish that goes on for close to a minute. The tannins are just as sweet, but there are more of them. This is a prodigious Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with all the creme de cassis one could ever want intermixed with charcoal, acacia flowers, licorice, and a hint of background oak. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 2-3 decades. Kudos!

WA 95+ (12/2010): The slightly more expensive, opaque purple-hued 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard (aged 18 months in 100% new French oak) is essentially a barrel selection. Obviously, the more structured wines with more density and aging potential were chosen for this cuvee. Very backward compared to the Napa bottling, the Wight Vineyard exhibits more graphite and toast along with creme de cassis, smoke and floral characteristics. Deep, rich and reserved with plenty of tannin, it needs time in the bottle, so cellar it for 4-5 years and drink it over the following three decades.

WA 95 (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard is a huge wine bursting with dark red fruit, flowers and sweet spices. The 2009 needs quite a bit of bottle age to shed its baby fat, but it is impressive, even at this early stage. Firm yet silky tannins frame the textured, generous finish. This seamless, highly expressive wine should drink well for at least a handful of years. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

WA 94 (10/2013): Richer and fuller-bodied with denser fruit and more structure is the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard. Exhibiting copious quantities of black currants intermixed with notions of camphor, spring flowers and toasty oak as well as a full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific intensity and purity, a voluptuous texture, and some tannin lurking under the lavish fruit and glycerin. It can be drunk now or cellared for another 15-20 years.

WA 94 (01/2014): The single-vineyard 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight is opaque purple, has similar aromatic and flavor characteristics to the regular Cabernet Sauvignon, just with more concentration and extract. The tannins may also be more elevated, but there is such an extravagant level of fruit, they’re not that noticeable. This is a beautiful wine that cascades over the palate, with a multidimensional personality, with background sweet oak and loads of blackberry and cassis fruit, licorice and camphor. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.

WA 93+ (10/2015): Very Pauillac-like (as usual), the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight has a similar character, with loads of creme de cassis, smoke, licorice and graphite as well as a full-bodied texture, dense, rich fruit, impressive purity and ripe tannin. This is a beauty, but interestingly, it doesn’t show the dramatic difference in quality that it often does at such a young age, although that may well evolve. Give it several more years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades.

WA 94 (10/2016): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight ratchets up the concentration level. The fruit is deeper, denser, the wine slightly fuller-bodied, but nevertheless shares the same style of licorice, crème de cassis, cedar wood and well-integrated, subtle oak. It is a full-bodied classic from Napa that should drink nicely for 20 or more years. The poor person’s Screaming Eagle?

JD 98 (12/2017): The flagship cuvee from this estate is the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard and it’s always a cellar selection of top lots from the estate vintage. I was able to taste this cuvee from two bottles and this is an undeniably majestic, ethereal effort from the Weight Family. Huge amounts of blue fruits, spring flowers, sandalwood, lavender, and potpourri notes all literally soar from the glass and this beauty has just about everything you could want in a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With a full-bodied, deep, concentrated style, incredible complexity, hints of background oak, and layers of sweet tannin, give bottle 2-3 years of bottle age and drink over the following 2-3 decades. Bravo! I loved both the 2014s and 2015s from Lewelling, but have to give the nod to the 2015s, which have that extra dimension. (Drink between 2018-2048)

JD 97 (1/2019): There are just over 450 cases of the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard, another majestic, heavenly example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from this estate. A selection from the estate vineyard that's all Cabernet aged 20 months in 90% new French oak (it's also bottled unfined and unfiltered), it offers a more pure, focused style than the straight Cabernet Sauvignon (as well as compared to the more over-the-top 2015) yet doesn't lose anything on the opulence and sheer decadence scale. Its incredibly pure bouquet of blueberries, black currants, lead pencil shavings, violets, and damp earth notes all remind me of a great vintage of Ducru-Beaucaillou. Full-bodied, ethereally textured, concentrated, classic and yet just pure deliciousness, this brilliant wine will continue drinking well for two decades.
