| WA 91 (12/2011): Possibly the finest second wine Cheval Blanc has yet produced, the 2009 Le Petit Cheval is a blend of 35% Merlot and 65% Cabernet Franc. It exhibits more caramelized notes than the grand vin along with a luscious, open-knit, subtle herbaceous component. This fleshy, sexy 2009 is ideal for drinking over the next decade. |

VM 94 (1/2016): The 2012 Petit Cheval is striking for many reasons, not the least of which is a very high percentage of Cabernet Franc that gives the wine much of its aromatic presence and overall depth. Deceptively medium-bodied in structure, the 2012 possesses remarkable balance and harmony. There is little question the 2012 Petit Cheval is better than the Grand Vin at many other properties. Rose petal, lavender, violet and mint notes leave a lasting impression on the finish. Antonio Galloni.
JS 90 (2/2015): A refined and firm red with dried cherries, spices and coffee beans. Full to medium body,fine tannins and a delicious finish. Better after 2017. |

VM 92 (3/2018): The 2014 Le Petit Cheval has an expressive floral bouquet with hints of fruitcake and fresh date complementing the red berry fruit. I like the delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied, classic in style, well balanced with a fine line of acidity, poised with the terroir showing through nicely on the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Neal Martin.
JS 92 (2/2017): Extremely perfumed and beautiful with currant and cherry aromas and just a hint of flowers. Medium body, very fine tannins and sheer polish and beauty. Lovely fruit. Want to drink it now, but it’ll be better in 2019. Second wine of Cheval Blanc. |

JD 94 (3/2021): The 2018 La Petit Cheval comes from designated parcels and is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. It shares similarities to its big brother with its complex, layered bouquet of red and black currants, ripe cherries, camphor, leafy tobacco, cedarwood, and flowers. Beautifully textured, medium-bodied, and as elegant as they come on the palate, this gorgeous Saint-Emilion can be drunk any time over the coming 15-20 years. It's one of the top second wines in the vintage.
VM 93 (3/2021): The 2018 Petit Cheval is a rich, heady wine. The natural intensity of the year comes through loud and clear in the wine's super-ripe profile and voluptuous feel. Black cherry, tobacco, new leather, licorice and menthol saturate the palate. When I tasted it from barrel I thought the Petit Cheval would drink well upon release, but I suggested cellaring for a few years. There's a lot here. Antonio Galloni. |
