| VM 90+ (10/2017): (13.7% alcohol; vinified entirely with whole clusters in neutral 500-liter barrels and racked only for the bottling; from a very warm site featuring rocky basalt soil): Bright medium ruby. Captivating, complex nose combines black raspberry, lavender, brown spices, wild herbs, cocoa powder and black olive tapenade. Suave, fine-grained and youthfully reserved, showing lovely sweetness and inner-mouth floral lift and definition to its berry, crushed rock and spice flavors; here the stems provide an energy boost. A distinctly adult style of Syrah with no undue weight or thickness. Finishes a touch clenched, with firm, youthfully imploded tannins that will need time to unwind. A fascinating and persistent moderate-octane Syrah. Incidentally, Chateau Ste. Michelle is getting this fruit as of the harvest of 2016. (Drink between 2019-2025). Stephen Tanzer. |
