WA 92 (12/2011): The 2008 Caldera is a gorgeous wine laced with tar, smoke, bacon fat and ash. It shows terrific purity and finesse through to the textured finish. Dried flowers, spices, tobacco and game add the final layers of complexity to this exotic, beguiling red. The 2008 Caldera is 65% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache and 5% Counoise. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. VM 91+ (6/2011): Medium red, a bit less saturated than the 2007. Then cooler and more complex on the nose, offering scents of red cherry, raspberry, lavender, tree bark, minerals, iron and leather; I would have thought I had my nose in a French wine. Silky and floral on entry, then tighter in the middle palate, with lovely integrated acidity to frame the raspberry fruit. Finishes with noteworthy floral persistence. Fruitier than the 2007 today but both wines have plenty of development ahead of them. |

WA 92 (12/2011): The 2009 Caldera bursts from the glass with an exciting melange of dark red fruit, spices, new leather and licorice. This plump, juicy red boasts striking inner perfume and gorgeous vibrancy. It is a beautiful wine to drink now and over the next 8-10 years. The 2009 is 65% Mourvedre, 29% Grenache and 6% Counoise. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. VM 92 (5/2012): Good full red. Captivating nose melds flinty, smoky minerality, rose petal and wild herbs, plus a note of rust. Intensely flavored and vibrant, with noteworthy precision to the flavors of redcurrant, hot brick, green olive and flowers. The counoise component lifts the wine's fruit and adds the floral element, says winemaker Helen Keplinger. This lovely approachable blend is ripe and long. WS 92 (3/2012): This muscle-bound effort is firm and intense, with a smoky, meaty edge to the dried berry, sage and underbrush flavors. Full-bodied and tannic, this begs for cellaring. Mourvèdre, Grenache and Counoise. Best from 2014 through 2024. 90 cases made. |

WA 94 (12/2011): The 2007 N=1 is 100% Grenache from Pelkan Ranch in Knights Valley. It is a huge, rich wine bursting with dark red fruit, white flowers, spices, mint and licorice. Today the wine is remarkably primary, but it should start drinking well in another few years. Mint, flowers and citrus wrap around the finish. This is a fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. VM 94 (6/2011): Good deep red. Reticent but surprisingly high-pitched nose for a wine that underwent extended barrel aging, with aromas of sour cherry, Earl Grey tea and blood orange carrying through on the vibrant palate. Rich and deep but not especially sweet, with a powerful structure and underlying rocky character contributing to the wine's superb definition. The longest and the most explosive of these wines today, finishing with fine, building tannins and terrific verve. This has the same 3.75 pH as the 2007 Red Slope but a bit less acidity, with no loss of energy. WS 93 (7/2011): Firm and structured, with an enticing mix of mineral, dried berry, sage and floral scents. Medium- to full-bodied, ending with a nice burst of layered black cherry, blackberry, nutmeg and spice. Drink now through 2017. 60 cases made. |
