JS 99 (5/2017): Extremely floral and complex on the nose with cedar, blackberries, blueberries, tobacco, stones, mushrooms... I'm simply running out of words here! Full to medium body and a tight and compact center palate. This is complete and dense. Extremely long and energetic. Drink in five years but a joy to taste. One of the best ever. VM 98 (12/2016): A powerful, tightly-wound wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin is likely to require the better part of the next decade to come into its own. The most backward and brooding of these wines, the Grand Vin is also quite primary and closed in on itself. Still, the energy, drive and focus of the best vintages is very much in evidence. Today, the 2014 is dense, seamless and utterly impeccable, with no hard edges, beautifully integrated oak (100% new) and exceptional balance. Antonio Galloni. WA 96 (10/2016): Always an exceptional cuvee, there are 900 cases of the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin, which is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. In 2015 there were 700 cases. This wine is even softer than the 2015, perhaps slightly less concentrated, but still at the top of the qualitative hierarchy in Napa Valley, with its terrific purity, nose of licorice, camphor, forest floor, blackcurrant and cedar wood. It is gorgeously fruited, full-bodied, but super-well-balanced. This is a beauty that can be drunk early, or cellared for another 25-30 years. |

WA 95 (12/2007): A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the opaque purple-hued 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon State Lane Vineyard is a rich, full-bodied effort displaying notes of cedar, truffles, black currants, coffee, chocolate, and spice. With sweet tannin, full-bodied power, and impressive purity and length, this rich, backward, Bordeaux-styled wine does not ignore the wealth and extravagant fruit of Napa Valley. In short, the best of both worlds. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030. VM 92-94 (6/2007): Highly perfumed aromas of currant, blackberry, tobacco, violet and wild lavender. Sweet and silky but penetrating, with good density leavened by superb acidity. Ultimately lusher and a bit more chocolatey than the Roberta's but still not a particularly fleshy style. Here the juicy finish features suaver tannins and subtle persistence. Promises to be the best vintage yet for this new producer, where improvement has been rapid in just three years. |

WA 94 (12/2007): The 2005 Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard is a 750-case blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc aged 20 months in new French oak. It exhibits incredible refinement, dark, medium to full-bodied flavors (earth, black currants, sweet cherries, licorice, truffles, and cedar), beautiful ripeness and purity, and a long, silky finish with no hard edges. Approachable now, it will last for 15 or more years. It is reminiscent of one of my favorite Bordeaux wines, Haut-Brion. WS 91 (6/2008): Tightly wound, yet weaves together a complex maze of dried currant, savory herb, cedar, spice and loamy earth flavors that are intense, focused, young and compact. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2010 through 2016. 740 cases made. VM 88-90 (6/2007): Full medium ruby. Aromas of cassis, violet, loam and bitter chocolate, plus a suggestion of sour cherry. Suave and penetrating, on the lean side but with a supple texture in spite of the rather strong impression of acidity. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent, with good energy. |

WA 96 (12/2009): The 2007 Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard (a 750-case blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) boasts an inky/plum/purple color as well as a complex bouquet of melted licorice, chocolate, creme de cassis, mocha, and sweet forest floor aromas. Full-bodied and layered with exquisite purity, texture, and length, this large-scaled offering reveals a supple texture along with 20-25 years of drinkability. It is a seductive yet extraordinarily complex wine that should prove to be a future super-star. VM 92 (6/2010): (46% each cabernet sauvignon and merlot, 6% cab franc and 2% petit verdot) Bright deep ruby. Deep aromas of blackberry, graphite and violet. Sweet, rich and concentrated, with a layered, chocolatey ripeness to the black fruit, mineral and licorice flavors. Finishes with broad, dusty tannins and terrific length. Stephen Tanzer. WS 92 (10/2010): Reminiscent of Bordeaux with its loamy earthiness, texture and structure, this is rich and full-bodied, with mouthcoating tannins yet also plenty of herb- and currant-laced mineral and graphite flavors that are intense and concentrated. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2012 through 2020. 750 cases made. JS 91 (4/2011): Notes of iodine and dark fruits on the nose. The palate is full and velvety, with a long finish. A serious wine that needs some time. Pull the cork after 2012. 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, the rest Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. 650 cases. |

| VM 97 (11/2013): A model of grace and finesse, the 2010 Estate Cuvee is showing beautifully today. Grilled herbs, smoke, plum and black cherry notes all meld together in an exquisite, gracious wine loaded with finesse and elegance. Today, the 2010 is a bit reserved, but its energy and exuberance just need time to fully emerge. The 2010s vibrant and impeccably nuanced throughout. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 95 (12/2006): A breakthrough effort, the 2004 Proprietary Red Wine State Lane Vineyard is a combination of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by lovely, evolved aromas of blueberries, black currants, white chocolate, licorice, and pain grille. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, finely etched, and impeccably well-balanced, with abundant amounts of sweet fruit, it should evolve for another 15-20 years. WS 93 (2/2007): Firm, intense and concentrated, showing rich, focused currant, anise, blackberry and spicy, cedary, toasty oak, with hints of violet and wild berry. Impressive finish, where the fruit and tannins are well-integrated. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2009 through 2014. 900 cases made. VM 90 (6/2007): (a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot) Bright, deep ruby. Pungent aromas of blackberry, black licorice, tar, bitter chocolate and lead pencil. Sweeter than the 2003 but also quite juicy; this possesses a strong spine of acidity but the acids are more successfully integrated than in the 2003 thanks to more supporting flesh. Silky in the middle but the tannins are a bit tough. The merlot was affected by the heat spike in early September, noted Lou Kapcsandy. |

JS 98 (5/2017): Love this merlot. Violets, roses, incense, and currants come to the fore on the nose. Full body and ultra-fine tannins that are so polished and integrated they become seamless and incredibly beautiful. Long and flavorful finish. Drink or hold. Long life ahead but who can wait? VM 96 (12/2016): The 2014 Roberta's Reserve comes across as quite soft and sensual in this vintage, with less of the drive that is such a signature of the other wines here. This is the only 2014 at Kapcsándy that has not grown meaningfully since I last tasted it. Then again, Merlot is a quirky grape, as it often goes through unpredictable periods of being closed, especially in the early going. Today, my impression is that the 2014 will drink well with minimal cellaring, but it has less structure than some of the surrounding vintages as well as the other 2014s. This is an especially laid back, almost translucent wine from Kapcsándy. It will be interesting to see what the future brings. A dollop (3%) of Cabernet Franc rounds out the blend. Antonio Galloni. WA 94-96 (10/2015): The 2014 Roberta’s Reserve State Lane Vineyard is a blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. 650 cases were produced, which is 27% of their total production. This was actually showing more fruit, density and personality than the more closed and reserved 2013. I’m not sure it has the concentration and overall upside potential of the 2013, but it’s beautifully rich, with loads of coffee bean, black chocolate, black cherry and mocha notes, a full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific purity and density. It should drink well for 15-20 years. |
