VM 92 (1/2018): The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Alluvial Selection is one of the most intriguing wines I have tasted from Gemstone in some years. Vibrant and powerful in the glass, with plenty of polish, the 2015 has a lot to offer. Black cherry, graphite, menthol, licorice and plum abound in this super-expressive Cabernet Sauvignon. The Alluvial Selection includes a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. (Drink between 2018-2027). Antonio Galloni. WA 92+ (12/2017): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Estate 'Alluvial Selection' Cabernet Sauvignon is a little youthfully mute, providing glimpses at black cherry compote, baked blueberries and spice cake with an undercurrent of charcuterie, underbrush and tar. The full-bodied palate is taut and chewy, offering up savory layers and dried berry flavors, finishing with the spices coming through. |

WA 95 (10/2016): Even better is the spectacular 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 20 months in 80% new French oak, this is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, but is a smaller cuvée of only 524 cases. The wine has plenty of cedary, Christmas fruitcake notes intermixed with licorice, blackcurrants, dusty/earthy undertones and a touch of background smoke and oak. Its tannins are soft, the acidity low and the wine round, concentrated and compelling. Drink it over the next 15-20 years. VM 93 (1/2025): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dense, opulent wine. Inky, super-ripe dark fruit, mocha, chocolate, spice, new leather and espresso are all amped up. This opulent, full-throttle Cabernet is not exactly subtle. In fact, it is pretty over the top in terms of richness. Even so, the 2014 has aged quite well. (Drink between 2024-2029). Antonio Galloni. |

VM 93 (1/2025): The 2014 Red Wine shows all the flamboyance of the Cabernet Sauvignon but with more vibrancy and greater aromatic presence. Dark cherry, red plum, pomegranate, spice, new leather and high-toned blood orange saturate the palate. This explosive Napa Valley red hits all the right spots for this style. The 2014 has gained considerable weight since I last tasted it. (Drink between 2024-2029). Antonio Galloni. WA 93 (10/2016): There are 703 cases of the 2014 Estate Red Wine, a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It is aged 20 months in 80% new French oak. The wine, from a vineyard just off the Silverado Trail, is a delicious fruit-forward, beautiful wine with dusty, loamy soil undertones, red and blackcurrants, licorice and a touch of tobacco leaf. It is deep, full-bodied, opulent and ideal for drinking over the next 15 years. |

WA 91 (12/2005): The inky/purple-hued 2003 Proprietary Red Wine, a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and the rest tiny portions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, reveals copious notes of chocolate along with hints of melted tar, charcoal, black cherries, and currants. Full-bodied, dense, and well-balanced, it should drink well for 10-15 years. Interestingly, Paul Frank continues to sell much of his production to such high quality wineries as Pahlmeyer. He will undoubtedly do more and more estate bottling as his vineyard ages. VM 90+ (6/2006): (a Bordeaux blend based on 84% cabernet sauvignon) Bright, deep medium ruby color. Black cherry, cassis, bitter chocolate and mocha on the slightly medicinal, primary nose. Then juicy, spicy and bright, with cooler, high-pitched flavors of black cherry, spices and flowers. Less lush and porty than the 2002 version but fresher and more elegant. Finishes with good sweet tannins and very good length. |
