| WA 90 (10/2013): Elk Cove’s 2011 Pinot Noir La Boheme – from a high-elevation, late-picked site not far from their winery (and also near the Gregory Ranch whose early performances at Bergstrom have so impressed me) – leads with impressively penetrating and high-toned evocations of maraschino, grenadine, kirsch, and sage. Black pepper and cherry pit add to the invigoration and finishing extension of a pungent and tingling if distinctly tannic performance, with saliva-liberating salinity compounding the juicy satisfaction of fresh red berries. Small clusters and berries are the norm on these vines, notes Campbell, but even so he had to drop crop three or four times in 2011 to achieve the sort of concentration he considers site-typical as well as optimal. Look for top-notch performance through 2020. |

| VM 89 (7/2012): Dark red. Expressive nose displays spicy cherry, redcurrant and cola scents. The palate shows good concentration and focus, with spicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors firmed by tangy acidity. Finishes with dusty tannins, a spicy white pepper note and good length.
