WA 94+ (12/2007): I don’t know whether it’s me, the vintage character, or whether Randy Dunn and his son have intentionally softened their wines, but these 2004s are more opulent and up-front than previous renditions. Yet, they lack neither concentration nor richness. Those of us who have been cellaring Dunn’s wines for twenty years, waiting for them to reach maturity should be thrilled by this new development. The Howell Mountain is denser and richer with blacker fruits as well as more body. Both are full-bodied, powerful Cabernets very much in keeping with his style. However, the tannins are softer and the wines reveal surprisingly developed aromatics. The 2004 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon should last for 20-25 years. It is a brilliant achievement. VM 93+ (6/2008): Bright ruby. Urgent, high-pitched aromas of crushed cassis, minerals and licorice. Juicy, bright and pure, with sharply delineated flavors of cassis, bitter chocolate and licorice. Very lively wine with a firm underlying spine. Finishes with subtle building length and a fine dusting of tannins. Still quite tight and primary but not hard. WS 87 (11/2007): Dark, intense and concentrated, with a gamy, earthy streak running through the dried currant, sage and herbal notes. Balanced, with firm, chewy tannins. Best to cellar. Best from 2011 through 2020. 2,000 cases made. |

VM 98+ (6/2015): There's not much to say about Randy Dunn's 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain that I haven't already said or written. A classic Howell Mountain Cabernet, the 2010 hits the palate with scents of graphite, pencil shavings, inky blue/purplish fruit, sage and spices, all backed up with swaths of broad yet impeccably balanced tannins. What a fascinating contrast it is to taste this next to David Abreu's Thorevilos as we round out the evening. The Dunn is powerful, structured and incisive, with magnificent expression of site and fabulous overall balance. Dunn’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain will go down as one of the great wines of this vintage. Readers have to be patient, but there is no question the 2010 is a real stunner. Knowing how hard it will be to wait, I expect the 2010 will start to open up around age ten. JS 98 (5/2014): Fabulous aromas of currants, licorice and eucalyptus. Full body with an intense backbone of acidity and tannins. Chewy but wonderfully polished. Turns to terracotta. Firm and silky. Great wine. Try it in 2018. 3,000 cases. WA 95 (10/2014): The flagship wine comes from their high elevation vineyards on Howell Mountain. The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain possesses stunning minerality as well as sweet notes of ink, acacia flowers, blueberries and blackberries. Thick, unctuously textured and full-bodied with terrific concentration and density, it should drink well for two decades. WS 92 (11/2014): Very tight, dense and powerful, targeting dark berry, black licorice, fresh herb, crushed rock, and subtle floral and herb notes. The tannins grip and hang on, but the flavors push through. A textbook version. Best from 2015 through 2023. |

VM 97 (5/2024): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain has really come together since I last tasted it. Still very young, the 2012 packs serious tannic heft in its mid-weight frame. Inky red fruit, gravel, iron, tobacco and spice-box all build effortlessly. The 100% new French oak is impeccably balanced. This is the best showing of the 2012 yet. I would not plan on opening a bottle anytime soon, even if doing so is hardly a crime. (Drink between 2024-2037). Antonio Galloni. JD 96 (5/2022): Tasting like a great Bordeaux, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain reveals a deeper ruby/plum hue to go with a classic Cabernet nose of blackcurrant and blackberry fruits intermixed with tobacco, scorched earth, licorice, and lead pencil notes. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it's shed its youthful baby fat and has a pure, focused texture with building tannins, wonderful overall balance, and terrific length. In an adolescent phase, it needs another 2-4 years of bottle age to hit full maturity, where it should stay for another 15-20 years. This is a beautiful, classic wine from this estate that reminds me of some of the Dunn wines from the 1980s. (Drink between 2024-2046). WA 95+ (10/2016): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is classic Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, with plenty of licorice, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, forest floor and background oak and earth. It is full-bodied, showing wonderfully sweet tannin and a long, layered finish. It does strike me as somewhat more approachable in its youth than Randy Dunn’s Cabernets would have been. Certainly, this will age for 25 or more years. |

| WA 87-89 (1/2000): The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (a composite blend) is highly-extracted, but very light. It obviously reflects the challenges presented by this vintage. Dry tannin in the finish might turn out to be cause for concern, but there is still plenty of cassis fruit in this medium to full-bodied Cabernet, but it is more compressed than usual. Dunn will undoubtedly build more flesh and fruit into it before bottling, but we will have to wait another year to find out. If Godzilla drank California Cabernet Sauvignon, would there be any doubt as to what choice it would be? Anyone who has regularly tasted Randy Dunn's Cabernet Sauvignons (first produced in 1979) realizes several things. They all possess the following characteristics: (1) remarkable color and richness, (2) massive personalities with huge tannic structures, (3) gorgeous purity and unreal aging potential. Last year I reported on a tasting where all of Dunn's top wines back through the 1982 vintage were served. Remarkably, they had hardly budged in development, yet they were still exceptionally rich in their pure creme de cassis, black raspberry, and blackberry fruit notes. These are obviously more than 20-25 year wines. It is not far-fetched to suggest that Randy Dunn is producing Cabernet Sauvignons that, in top vintages, will be fresh, lively, and rich in fruit at age 50. Unbelievably, Randy Dunn has barely raised his prices in the two decades he has been making wine. For those with patience, these are among the finest values in long-lived, classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. |
