WA 93 (8/2011): The 2007 Andreas is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the then Wallula Vineyard made by Gilles Nicault, the resident winemaker at Shoup’s Long Shadows winery. The wine was aged for 30 months in new French oak. It is a dense, round, savory, well-balanced wine with enough underlying structure to achieve its 20th birthday in peak form. VM 92 (11/2011): Good ruby-red. Claret-like aromas of plum, reducrrant, spices and herbs, with higher-pitched suggestions of red cherry and rose petal. Suave and light on its feet, with a youthfully medicinal aspect to the flavors of red fruits, flowers and licorice. Firmly structured but not a bit hard. Finishes with strong fruit and a hint of marzipan. This exciting new project involves brothers Andy and Bill den Hoed, Allen Shoup (CEO of Long Shadows) and winemaker Rob Newsome. (Gilles Nicault was responsible for 2006 vintage of Andreas.) Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 95 (6/2013): My favorite of these new releases, and possessing a fantastic mix of richness and structure, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Andreas is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 30 months in 90% new French oak. Featuring knockout richness and depth, this massively fruited, yet elegant effort offers up aromas of black currants, licorice, tobacco leaf, mint and mulled spices to go with an unctuous, chewy texture on the palate. Count me a fan of this big, rich, butremarkably balanced and fresh wine. There’s certainly some tannin present on the palate, but the overall impression here is one of polish and richness. Enjoy it over the coming decade or so. Drink now-2024+. VM 90 (11/2013): Good full, bright ruby. Very ripe, savory aromas of dark cherry and bitter chocolate. Mellow and deep on the palate, showing an inviting nutty quality to the raspberry, redcurrant and plum fruit flavors. Finishes with broad, ripe tannins and noteworthy persistence. Offers a lovely balance between its body and its acid/tannin structure. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 94 (6/2014): The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Andreas is gorgeous. Comprised of 100% Cabernet and aged 30 months in 90% new French oak, it gives up classic Cabernet Sauvignon flair with green tobacco, black currant, lead pencil and underbrush flowing to a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, rich and yet still fresh profile on the palate. In short, it’s a stunning Cabernet to drink over the coming 20 years or more. VM 91+ (12/2014): Bright, saturated red-ruby. Deep, complex aromas of blueberry, violet and mocha. A sweet, lovely midweight with intense dark berry and chocolate flavors accented by violet florality. Really superb depth of fruit here. This very primary wine finishes broad and sweet, with suave tannins and lovely lift. Should enjoy a graceful evolution in bottle. Stephen Tanzer. |
