WA 93 (4/2014): The 2010 Grand Malbec is fermented in new oak barrels. The grapes were hand-sorted and dropped in the barrels, where the maceration process took place in three stages: cold maceration (10-12 days); alcoholic fermentation (14 days) and post fermentation maceration until it reaches the 45 to 60 days required to complete the total process. Malolactic fermentation was carried out in 100% French new oak barrels where the wine matured for 18 months. It has notes of sweet spices, Belgian chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and very ripe black cherries, blackberries and liqueur de cassis with spiced up, crushed violets emerging with time as the wine is exposed to air and gets warmer. I tasted it quite cool, as the alcohol level is high. Of course there are unbalanced wines at 13% alcohol and balanced ones at 15%, but 16% seem a bit excessive. It is lush, dense, with glossy tannins, masses of dry extract, penetrating flavors and a long, warm finish. This might not be my favorite style of wine, but I must admit that it is extremely well-crafted, and seems to be in good balance, but everything is just XXXL-sized. A showy, bodybuilder Malbec. VM 92+ (3/2014): Saturated, bright deep ruby. Somewhat high-toned aromas of blackberry, licorice and violet, but without the slightly advanced nutty element of the 2009 Grand Vin. Densely packed, lush and smooth, displaying excellent creamy depth and shape to its very dark, concentrated blackberry and black cherry flavors. This very young wine boasts excellent definition and energy and a ripely tannic, slowly building finish that stains the palate with dark berries and spices. Outstanding structure and aging potential here. Stephen Tanzer. |
