WS 93 (7/2008): Supple, generous, long and distinctive for is spicy, smoky blackberry, cherry and plum flavors, expanding beautifully on the long, expressive finish. Has impressive persistence. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2009 through 2015. 7,000 cases made. VM 90 (12/2008): Good medium ruby. Sexy, complex, very ripe aromas of blackberry, minerals, tar and nutty oak. Suave, lush and fine-grained, with ripe acidity framing the red and black fruit flavors and a note of tobacco leaf providing lift. At once intense and pliant. Finishes broad, long and dry, with substantial oak-driven tannins that call for some patience. (Incidentally, the current set of high-end reds from sister winery Columbia Crest-the 2005 Reserve Merlot, Reserve Cabernet and Walter Clore Private Reserve-were all crushed by oak; the cabernet was the best of them, at 85 points.) WA 87 (3/2013): Its Cabernet Sauvignon blended solely with 25% Merlot, the 2005 Col Solare is disappointingly drying in finish and was surely far more pleasurable some years ago. It spend 26 months in barrel, a length of elevage that has since not been approached and which, in Notaro’s words, “I have never found that the wine needed." That said, there are certainly interesting scents and flavors here including autumn foliage, cedar, tobacco, and dried cherry, which - just as in the corresponding 2006 - hold most fascination and sense of savor on the mid-palate. This should certainly be enjoyed soon. (Similar reservations to those just mentioned apply in spades to a 2002 tasted alongside.) |

| WA 94 (6/2013): Starting the tasting and a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that comes from a variety of vineyards (about 30% in Red Mountain and the balance from the Columbia Valley) and was aged 22 months in mostly new French oak, the 2007 Col Solare is a superb effort that offers up notions of cassis, cedar, lead pencil, tar and dried herb as well as a full-bodied, supple and polished texture. A classic Washington State Bordeaux blend, it stays classy and balanced, and shows the quality of the 2007 vintage. It’s also worth noting that there were 11,000 cases of this wine produced! Hats off to the Col Solare team – this is a beauty. Drink now-2022. |

WA 93+ (6/2013): The most structured and tannic of the lineup and a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and a splash of Malbec that was harvested during the second week of September, the 2009 Col Solare obviously comes from a warm vintage. Offering up ripe, decadently styled aromas of blackberry, kirsch, licorice and classic Red Mountain crushed stone-like minerality (42% of the blend is from Red Mountain) on the nose, it is a big rich 2009 that has solid mid-palate depth and layers of fruit that only partially cover full-throttle tannin. Needing time to round into shape, it will benefit from another 2-3 years of bottle- age and have a solid 15+ years of overall longevity. VM 92 (10/2025): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon wafts up with mentholated freshness, mixing balsamic-laced black cherries, clove and minty herbs. It's round and cooling on the palate, with tart red berry fruits and a subtle citrus tinge. This tapers off with a gentle tug of residual tannins and medium length, leaving a slight sour twang to resonate. (Drink between 2025-2030). Eric Guido. |
