WA 92 (4/2001): An opaque blue/purple color is accompanied by a sensational bouquet of melted fudge, plums, Asian spices, blackberries, and prunes. Smoky, barbeque-like spices also emerge with airing. Full-bodied, super-extracted, rich, pure, and mouth-saturating, this large-scaled effort can be consumed with pleasure, but it will age for two decades. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2020.
VM 89+ (6/2001): Red-ruby. Aromas of red berries, sweet butter, toffee, leather, smoked meat and nutty oak. Round and sappy in the mouth, with bright, intense flavors of currant, cherry and game. Finishes firmly tannic, with a slightly medicinal inky quality. |

WA 94 (6/2015): From the Comte von Neipperg, his wines from this over-achieving estate always deliver an aromatic fireworks display of cedar wood, Christmas fruitcake, roasted herbs, black olive, cassis and sweet kirsch. The 2005 has all that as well as ripe, well-integrated, velvety tannin, and full body in a sexy, luscious, heady style to drink now and over the next 10-15 years
VM 93 (4/2021): The 2005 Clos de L'Oratoire is a huge, bombastic wine. Its concentration and depth are impressive, to be sure. But I find the 2005 monolithic, heavy and one-dimensional. Copious new oak, espresso, blackberry jam and dried herbs are all amplified in this decidedly hedonistic Saint-emilion. Some readers will surely appreciate this style more than I do, but I find it hard to get too excited about the 2005, although I must add that the wine showed well, even after having been opened more than 24 hours. WA 93 (12/2011): A flamboyant St.-Emilion, this largely-Merlot blend displays notes of Christmas fruitcake, cedar wood, tobacco leaf, and loads of black currant and blackberry fruit. A showy, extravagantly concentrated, hedonistic style of St.-Emilion, with some wood smoke and roasted herbs adding nuance to the full-throttle aromatics and long, lush, silky flavors, this wine can be drunk now or cellared for up to 15+ years.
VM 91 (3/2019): The 2009 Clos de l’Oratoire feels a little flat on the nose with copious sweet mulberry and red plum fruit, moderate definition but somehow a little static. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, fine acidity, quite cohesive with sage and white pepper towards the finish. Moderate length. Very fine, but not as long as its peers. VM 94 (1/2019): The 2016 Clos de l'Oratoire is dense, resonant, but also quite closed in on itself. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and smoke all meld together in this super-expressive, layered Saint-Émilion. In 2016, Clos de l'Oratoire is quite understated and shows more of an emphasis on freshness than in the past, typical of all the Stephan von Neipperg's wines today. Tasted two times. (Drink between 2021-2036). Antonio Galloni.
JD 93 (2/2019): From the team at Canon-la-Gaffelière, the 2016 Clos de L'Oratoire is a winner based on 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc raised in 45% new French oak. It’s a ripe yet structured Saint-Emilion that has terrific minerality in its black raspberry and cassis fruits as well as notes of chocolate, tobacco, and subtle oak. A terrific wine, it needs 4-5 years of bottle age to shine, but is capable of keeping for 15-20 years. |
