Bootlegger’s Hill Pinot Noir

VM 93 (8/2017): The 2014 Pinot Noir Bootlegger's Hill is super-expressive today. Sweet tobacco, dried flowers, mint, dried herbs and a burst of orange zest give the 2014 lovely aromatic undertones to play off the red-toned fruit. Silky, pliant and open today, the 2014 is showing beautifully. This is an especially gracious, silky Pinot Noir for Russian River. Antonio Galloni.

Bootlegger’s Hill Pinot Noir

JD 96 (6/2019): Showing similar to last year’s tasting, the 2016 Pinot Noir Bootlegger's Hill is a beauty from Michael Browne that has plenty of kirsch and black cherry notes, medium to full body, a terrific floral and forest floor character, and sweet tannins. It’s opened up slightly since this time last year and should drink nicely for another 7-8 years.

2017

Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

JD 97+ (5/2020): I loved the 2017 Pinot Noir last year, and it didn't disappoint this go-round. Coming from a mix of sites in the Russian River Valley, its deep ruby/purple color is followed by rocking notes of black raspberries, kirsch, sappy flowers, violets, and Asian spices. These all carry to an elegant, incredibly seamless Pinot Noir that has awesome tannins, no hard edges, and just a plush, sexy style that begs to be drunk. Nevertheless, its balance and purity will all keep this drinking nicely for a solid decade. (Drink between 2020-2030)

WA 93 (12/2019): From several different vineyards, the 2017 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley has a gregarious nose of blackberry jam, underbrush, tar, oodles of ripe red berries, potpourri, black tea leaves and a very spicy undercurrent—lush, deep and still very youthful. Medium to full-bodied, it explodes in the mouth with loads of spicy ripe fruits firmly knit by grainy tannins and juicy acidity, finishing long and flavorful. This is a big, powerful and delicious expression, a Pinot with so much stuffing. This will be released in the fall of 2020.

VM 92 (1/2020): The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate is an attractive mid-weight Pinot, supple but also much more refined than previous wines. Ripe red/purplish berry fruit, spice and sweet floral overtones all meld together nicely. Although quite attractive, the 2017 is much lighter in feel and overall weight than previous releases. 2018

Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

JD 97 (7/2021): The 2018 Pinot Noir sports a medium ruby, plum, almost opaque hue as well as a killer bouquet of ripe black raspberries, redcurrants, roasted herbs, loamy earth, and sandalwood. Rich, almost full-bodied, and beautifully textured, with silky, polished tannins, this is another rock star of a Pinot Noir from Michael Browne that will deliver the goods over the coming 7-8 years, probably longer, although I have no idea why you would delay gratification!

2021

Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

JD 99+ (6/2024): A deep jeweled ruby/magenta hue, the 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley takes things to another level and is likely going to be just as impressive as the last release of 2019, as they made the difficult decision to skip the 2020 vintage due to the fires. On opening, it's layered and refined on the nose, with notes of black raspberries, violets, dark mineral earth, and sweet cardamom spice. The palate boasts a luxurious silky and velvety texture that's completely seamless, with a long, outstanding finish. It will show its best in another 5-6 years. Drink 2027-2040. Audrey Frick.

VM 95 (1/2024): The 2021 Pinot Noir Estate is an elegant, luxurious wine. Plump and juicy but not at all heavy, the 2021 is wonderfully classy from start to finish. Succulent dark red cherry, pomegranate, blood orange and a kiss of new French oak race across the palate. Silky tannins and bright acids frame the long, persistent finish nicely. There’s a bit more restraint in Michael Browne’s wines these days, and that’s not a bad thing at all. This mid-weight Pinot is terrific. (Drink between 2024-2034). Antonio Galloni.

2013

Treehouse Vyd. Pinot Noir

WA 97 (9/2016): The larger production cuvee (1,748 cases) is the 2013 Pinot Noir Treehouse Vineyard, which comes from a higher elevation site that's above the fog line, roughly eight miles from the Pacific Ocean. Its deep ruby color is followed by to-die-for notes of black raspberries, crushed violets, cassis, spice and toasted bread. Utterly perfect on the palate, with medium to full-bodied richness, an ethereal, seamless, multi-dimensional texture, fine tannin and crazy length, hats off to the team at CIRQ for this singular beauty. Give bottles a few years (if you can resist) and enjoy over the following decade or more.

VM 94 (8/2016): The 2013 Pinot Noir Treehouse is rich, bold and super-expressive, with a vibrant, red-fruit character and lifted aromatics that add freshness. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, lavender and spice notes make a strong first impression. An accent of blood orange on the finish gives the wine just enough brightness to balance things out. In this tasting, the Treehouse is a bit more precise and nuanced than the Bootlegger's Hill. Antonio Galloni.

VM 94 (8/2017): The 2014 Pinot Noir Treehouse is more typical of the Russian River in its boisterous, racy personality and dark fruit profile. Black cherry, cola, spice and menthol are some of the many notes that flesh out in this ample, resonant Pinot. Richly textured and phenolic in feel, the Treehouse is another winner from CIRQ and proprietor Michael Browne. Antonio Galloni.

JD 97+ (6/2019): The 2016 Pinot Noir Treehouse is also beautiful, with a fresher, more focused style. Ample black cherries, mulberries, iron, forest floor, and spring flower notes all give way to a medium to full-bodied beauty that has more obvious structure and tannin than the Bootlegger’s Hill. Give bottles another year and enjoy over the following decade.
