2009 |
Cardiac Hill Syrah |
$40 |

VM 93+ (6/2011): Opaque purple. Smoky red and dark berry aromas are complemented by classic syrah notes of olive tapenade, minerals and black pepper. Tangy, spice-accented black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors are braced by dusty tannins and pick up an exotic violet note on the back end. Taut, focused and very fresh, finishing with excellent cut and peppery persistence. This is still a baby. This was also fermented with 40% whole clusters, said Officer. Stephen Tanzer. WA 93 (2/2012): The 2009 Syrah Cardiac Hill is a gorgeous, thrilling wine laced with bacon fat, tapenade, savory herbs and plums. It possesses gorgeous aromatic delineation and fabulous length. The intense, mineral-drenched finish argues for cellaring the wine for at least another 2-3 years, but readers are going to have a very hard time keeping their hands off this gem. Cardiac Hill is a very cold site. The wine (100% Syrah) was vinified with 40% whole cluster and aged in French oak barrels, 27% new. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. |

James Berry Vineyard Syrah |

| VM 94 (6/2014): (20% whole clusters, 27% new oak and 15.9% alcohol): Inky purple. Sexy aromas of cassis, cherry compote, roasted coffee and incense. Supple, pliant and deep in black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors. Becomes spicier and more energetic with air and picks up a smoky nuance that lingers on the long, sweet, intensely spicy finish. I was shocked to see that alcohol number as the wine doesn't betray it at all. Stephen Tanzer. |

Limerick Lane Vyd. Zinfandel |
$35 |

|
| |
| VM 93 (3/2017): The 2014 Zinfandel Limerick Lane emerges from the 1910 Block, which is the oldest section of the property. Bright, lifted and precise, Carlisle's Limerick Lane Zinfandel shows a more finessed, delicate and elegant side of this famed site. Antonio Galloni. |

Pelkan Ranch Syrah |

| VM 94 (5/2011): Inky purple. Potent aromas of cassis, cherry liqueur, blueberry, exotic spices, violet and graphite. Incredibly deep, powerfully structured wine with sappy dark fruit flavors laced with espresso, violet, cola, star anise and cracked pepper. For all its power this wine comes across as almost racy, with wonderful lift and energy from bright, juicy acidity. The deep, sappy blackcurrant and blueberry flavors refuse to let up on the long, spicy finish. No stems were used here and the wine was raised in 50% new French barriques. Stephen Tanzer. |

2013 |
Rossi Ranch Grenache |
$40 |
3 |
|
| |
| VM 92-94 (1/2015): The 2013 Grenache Rossi Ranch is one of the many highlights in this extensive range. High-toned aromatics meld into a core of sweet red berries in a pliant, super-expressive Grenache with Zinfandel-like leanings in its slightly elevated alcohol. The 2013 was co-fermented with 9% Mourvedre (done with stems). In 2013, Mike Officer did not bottle his Rhône blend Three Birds; most of that fruit went into this bottling. Antonio Galloni. |

2014 |
Sierra Mar Vyd. Syrah |
$50 |

|
| |
WA 95 (9/2016): Even better, the 2014 Syrah Sierra Mar Vineyard might be the top Syrah out of this vineyard. Also inky and glass-staining, it offers killer notes of caramelized plums, smoked meats, licorice, cassis and pepper in a full-bodied, ultra-pure, elegant package. I love its mid-palate and this total blockbuster will knock your socks off over the coming decade or longer. VM 92 (3/2017): The 2014 Syrah Sierra Mar Vineyard, from the southern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands, shows a much denser and more powerful expression of the appellation. Black fruit, licorice, cloves and leather are pushed forward. There is no shortage of depth, but today, the Sierra Mar is a bit monolithic. Antonio Galloni. |
