JD 92 (8/2017): More youthful than the classic cuvée (the only difference between the two however is the élevage), the 2009 Le Cigare Volant Reserve was aged 18 months in airtight glass jars before being bottled unfiltered. Notes of black pepper, violets, earth and some meatiness flow to a medium-bodied, elegant, nicely concentrated wine that shows lots of Syrah character and complexity. Drink it over the coming 6-7 years.
VM 91 (8/2015): Deep red. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and lavender, with a hint of anise in the background. Smooth and broad on entry, then tighter in the middle, offering bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that put on weight with aeration. The spicy quality comes back on a very long, sappy, penetrating finish that features fully resolved tannins and a whisper of spicecake. (Drink between 2018-2025). Josh Raynolds. |
