VM 96 (10/2021): The ripeness of the 2018 vintage gives an almost Syrah/Viognier character to the Chinon La Croix Boissee, which offers sweet black fruit and a creamy apricot note. Sumptuous yet never ever opulent, it's almost as if the wine's just done a yoga class. Plentiful tannins give the inside of your cheeks a chalky rub, while there's surprising freshness considering the ripeness, leading to a lengthy finish. This is a baby that will turn out to be a great adult. Rebecca Gibb.

VM 90 (1/2024): The 2020 La Croix Boisée is deep, savory and rich. It is a complex, layered wine with abundant, chalky, textured tannins. Flavors of olive tapenade, mint and chocolate meet a lamb roast in this deeply savory wine. There's a clear suggestion of Brett here in its flavors and a drying hint. Still, at this stage, its cellaring potential has to be questioned based on what it is currently showing, and this is reflected in its far lower score than in previous vintages. What a shame. (Drink between 2024-2030). Rebecca Gibbs.

WA 93+ (8/2021): The 2018 Chinon Le Clos Guillot is another impressive Cabernet Franc from Bernard Baudry. The bouquet reveals a perfectly ripe, refined and elegant yet also intense dark fruit aroma reminiscent of blackberries and cherries intermixed with leather and some distinctive flinty aromas. Quite open from this bottle but highly attractive. Silky, round and with remarkable finesse and tension, this is a full-bodied, concentrated and quite tannic Chinon with a still astringent finish but with enough sweetness and intensity for good aging potential. The aftertaste is long and compact and once more represents the concentrated character of the berries when harvested. An impressive wine whose future is even more great than its current status. VM 97 (10/2021): The 2018 Chinon Clos Guillot is a rich, focused powerhouse that's firm and direct, with dark blackberries and smoky notes. If we lived in an ideal world, this would be aged before releasing, as it's ripe yet tight and tannic, with the limestone soils providing grip along the sides of the mouth and a sense of direction. Lengthy, serious and complex, leaving the mouth full of dark berry fruit, spice and tea leaves. A baby. Rebecca Gibb. |

VM 95-97 (10/2021): Just outside the village, Clos Guillot sits on a slope on clay over limestone. The 2019 Chinon is a serious barrel sample that melts in your mouth with its silken texture. No crushing, very little remontage and a year in used barrels all lend a very gentle touch. The tannins build gradually, coating the mouth with the finest of chalky textures. Excellent acidity keeps things fresh through the finish. Rebecca Gibb.

VM 91-93 (8/2022): Hailing from the limestone-clay slopes on the outskirts of Chinon town, home to other famous vineyards like Clos de l'Olive and Chêne Vert, Le Clos Guillot 2020 offers a cloud of Cabernet Franc fruit with fine refreshing acidity. Savory, silken and seductive, the wine is flooded with a stream of acidity. It is a calm wine with a mass of chalky tannins that coat the palate reassuringly. The finish is long, quiet and scented with dark raspberries and spice. There is a minor complaint of a touch of dryness at the very end of this wine. Rebecca Gibb.

WA 92 (8/2021): Baudry's 2018 Chinon Les Grézeaux is deep, pure, fresh and dark on the nose, with wild and spicy black cherry aromas and lovely concentration and mineral freshness. A classic! Silky, fresh and firm on the palate this is a full-bodied, concentrated and elegant Cabernet Franc with remarkable finesse and sustainable, terroir-driven freshness. The finish is intense and powerful and has this lovely silky, elegant fruit that makes it a top gastronomic wine without being chichi.

VM 93 (10/2021): Sourced from a single vineyard located at the bottom of Chinon's slope on alluvial/clay soils, the 2019 Chinon Les Grézeaux is currently a bit shy in terms of revealing its fruit flavors. It’s also a hint reductive with its smoky bacon characters, but that's unimportant. What matters is the core of fruit and excellent focus. It's very relaxed and fluid with mouthwatering acidity. The tannins are more serious than the front and midpalate would have suggested and betray a little grittiness. Aged 15 months in cement, this could be opened in one to two years, but the concentration and structure offer drinking over a decade. (Drink between 2022-2030). Rebecca Gibb.

VM 91 (8/2022): Off gravel soils at the bottom of the coteaux, the 2020 Les Grézeaux is a fine, fruity wine but it's much more than that. It's a delicate style that packs concentration within its light, silky bodied core. The tannins are fine and like licking a stone. It's good enough to eat. Blackcurrants and black raspberries linger on the medium length finish. (Drink between 2022-2033). Rebecca Gibb.
