WA 96 (1/2003): The blockbuster 1990 is just now approaching full maturity. It possesses a dense ruby/purple color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of prunes, kirsch liqueur, balsam wood, incense, and fruitcake. Full-bodied, with a viscous texture, and a long, concentrated finish exhibiting admirable purity and balance, it can be drunk now and over the next 17-18 years. |

WA 97 (12/2014): While I loved Michel's 2012 Cote Rotie la Mordoree from barrel, it blew me away from bottle, and I think bares more than a passing resemblance to his 1991. About as elegant and seamless as they come, it exhibits incredible notes of violets, peppery spice, spring flowers, rose petal and darker berry fruit. This is followed by a full-bodied, sweetly fruited, expansive Cote Rotie that's perfectly balanced, has beautiful mid-palate density, and ultra-fine tannin that emerge on the finish. It's a blockbuster effort to drink over the coming two decades. JLL ***[*] (11/2013): (From cask) Dark colour. Dense bouquet, still under restraint, a rather muscular ensemble, with airs of nuts, black raisin, macerated black fruits - the bouquet has weight. The palate works well: it is nicely packed, also direct, takes on gummy tannins towards the finish. The shape is one of a rectangle more than a sphere, and covers the palate across and along well, sustains via an elegant juice, a coulis style fruit. Good, has lots of potential. It is a bit roasted on the aftertaste. From 2016. VM 92-94 (3/2014): Inky ruby. Sexy, intensely perfumed aromas of blackberry, cherry-cola and violet, with allspice, cola and olive nuances building with air. Sweet and penetrating in the mouth, showing a seamless texture and vibrant dark berry compote and violet pastille flavors. Finishes with excellent energy and focus, leaving cola and smoky mineral notes behind. |

JD 96+ (12/2018): Blackberries, crushed violets, ample minerality, and some scorched earth notes all emerge from the 2016 Côte Rôtie La Mordoree. Made from 100% Syrah brought up in 30% new barrels, it's medium to full-bodied, tight and concentrated on the palate, with good acidity, plenty of extract, and a great finish. It has plenty of upfront charm, yet a tighter, firm core that's going to benefit from short-term cellaring. It’s capable of lasting for 20-25 years. WS 96 (10/2019): Steeped plum, mulberry and blackberry fruit give this weight and flesh, while sweet tobacco, licorice root and tapenade notes add range and depth in the background. Offers a strong, graphite-edged finish. Best from 2022 through 2040. 53 cases imported. VM 95 (9/2019): Opaque ruby. Potent dark berry, exotic spice, potpourri and smoky mineral aromas display impressive energy and pick up olive and smoked meat nuances with air. Sappy, deeply concentrated blackberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors stain the palate and show noteworthy energy and focus. Sweet and seamless in texture, finishing with strong, floral-driven persistence and fine-grained tannins that add gentle final grip. Josh Raynolds. WA 95 (10/2018): A blend of old vines in the lieux-dits of Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, the 2016 Cote Rotie la Mordoree shows a bit of cedary oak up front (it spent 18 months in 30% new barriques). It's full-bodied and ripe on the palate, with herb-tinged red fruit notes that show mammoth complexity and a fine, silky, long finish. |

VM 93 (3/2013): Inky purple. Ripe, spice-tinged black and blue fruits on the nose and palate. Picks up smokiness and sweetness with air and shows a suave blend of richness and vivacity. Tannins make a late appearance and melt quickly into the fruit. Finishes with excellent clarity and thrust, leaving allspice and candied blueberry notes behind. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 95 (12/2022): Lastly, the 2020 Crozes Ermitage Les Varonniers comes from a cooler, granite terroir just beside Hermitage. All destemmed Syrah brought up in 20% new French oak, it's slightly tight and closed aromatically yet has solid purity in its darker, cassis and currant-like fruit as well as truffly earth and gunpowder nuances. This ripe, powerful, structured Crozes has all the right stuff, yet it might take a decade to hit maturity. The alcohol here is a sound 13.5% with a pH of 3.8. It's most likely the Crozes of the vintage and is a brilliant wine readers will love to have in the cellar. |

WA 98 (9/2015): Showing similar to last year, the 2012 Ermitage le Meal is a blockbuster that's about as voluptuous and sexy as Hermitage gets. Loaded with cassis, black raspberry, leather, dried violets and wild herbs, this beauty is full-bodied, has tons of sweet tannin and brilliant purity of fruit. Given its wealth of material, low acidity and incredible texture, it should drink well all of its life. WS 96 (4/2015): A nice bass line plays here, featuring dark currant, fig and blackberry confiture notes that have melded already with a broad swath of warm charcoal and ganache. Impressive, loamy grip holds the finish, though this will needs a few years to stretch out fully. Best from 2018 through 2030. 40 cases imported. VM 95 (2/2015): Dark purple. A highly perfumed, complex bouquet evokes ripe cherry and raspberry, along with complicating notes of candied flowers, incense and Indian spices. Sappy and expressive, with intense black raspberry and floral pastille flavors underscored by juicy acidity. Shows superb focus and lift on the finish, which lingers with Outstanding tenacity; suave, supple tannins barely peak through the wine's vibrant fruit. |

JD 98+ (12/2022): Another wine that flirts with perfection, the 2020 Ermitage Le Méal comes from the steep, south-facing slope right in the heart of Hermitage hill. All destemmed and brought up in the standard 20% new barrels and demi-muids, it has a more tight, straight, almost reserved profile than usual yet doesn't lack for density, mid-palate depth, structure, and concentration. Blackberries, redcurrants, spice, dried flowers, and loamy earth all define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, has ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. It needs to be forgotten for at least 5-7 years but will evolve for three decades. |

WA 98+ (2/2008): The biggest production cuvee, the 2005 Ermitage Le Pavillon (1,067 cases in this vintage) has a dense purple color, the classic acacia flower, graphite-based, smoky creme de cassis nose with a tremendous intensity and a full-bodied power and richness that is awesome. These are monumental wines, and when you think that this wine, much like most of its siblings, is made from yields of 12-18 hectoliters per hectare, the explanation for its concentration and extraordinary expression of terroir is obvious. WS 96 (7/2008): Very focused, with grippy but streamlined tannins carrying dark currant, plum, coffee, mocha and mineral notes through the long, zesty finish filled with wild berry and briar patch. This should flesh out nicely in the cellar, as there's some real serious grip. Best from 2010 through 2025. 1,067 cases made. VM 93+ (2/2008): Inky ruby. Deep, brooding and initially inscrutable, with uncannily concentrated blackberry and cassis scents. Rich dark fruit preserve flavors seem almost solid, but there's wonderful vivacity too. Picks up supple tannins on the finish, which leaves a tattoo of black and blue fruits on the palate. Extremely primary right now. |

WA 100 (12/2011): A perfect wine, the 2009 Ermitage Le Pavillon (1,093 cases) boasts a black/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of acacia flowers, blackberries, blueberries, roasted meats, creme de cassis, truffles, graphite, powdered rock and new saddle leather. Extremely dense, noble and pure, this monumental Ermitage is built for 50-100 years of cellaring. |

JD 100 (12/2022): The 2020 Ermitage Le Pavillon is pure gold, and Hermitage doesn't get any better. Incredible aromatics of cassis, graphite, burning embers, and crushed stone all emerge from this beauty. Stunningly proportioned and incredibly pure, it's full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, but as with all great vintages of this cuvée, it's going to demand bottle age. While Les Greffieux and Le Méal bring much more opulence, this is the powerhouse, long-distance candidate in the lineup. It's an incredible effort. Give bottles upwards of a decade in the cellar, and it should evolve effortlessly over the following 30-40 years. WA 96-98 (1/2022): Chapoutier's 2020 Ermitage le Pavillon shows a more chiseled, defined structure than the other 2020s, suggesting greater potential longevity. This full-bodied effort is loaded with purple raspberries and cassis, but it remains tight and taut, showing fascinating tension and elegance allied to great depth and length. Impressive! |

WA 100 (8/2014): An incredible wine that tops out on my scale, the 2006 Ermitage Les Greffieux is massively concentrated and rich, with incredible aromas and flavors of black fruits, roasted herbs, tar, licorice and beef blood. Without a doubt the most concentrated, powerful wine in the lineup, it has the fruit and texture to make your eyes roll back in your head, but has the depth, concentration and structure to evolve for decades. From hot, dry year, I’ve no idea what makes this vintage so special here, but this incredible effort possesses a singular, unique profile, and is off-the-charts. Don’t miss it! VM 95 (1/2009): Opaque purple. Hugely aromatic, alluring bouquet of red berry preserves, violet, rose, smoked meat, minerals and black pepper. Saturates the palate with deep black raspberry and kirsch flavors, picking up tangy mineral and spice character with air. Utterly seamless Hermitage with outstanding finishing lift and precision. Josh Raynolds. WS 95 (6/2009): Packed, almost like a 2005, with gorgeous boysenberry and blackberry confiture notes laid over loam, pastis, violet and black licorice. The long, fleshy finish is dense but seamless. Terrific purity. Best from 2010 through 2025. 305 cases made. |

VM 94 (3/2016): Deep ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red and dark berries, Indian spices, candied violet and incense, lifted by a bright mineral quality. Silky, sweet and energetic on the palate, offering vibrant black raspberry, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that spread out and gain weight with air. Manages to be both powerful and graceful, offering superb back-end punch and velvety tannins that shape the floral finish. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 98+ (12/2022): More game, bacon fat, truffly earth, and both red and black fruits emerge from the 2020 Ermitage Les Greffieux, another deep, rich, incredibly concentrated wine from this estate. Coming from the more sedimentary soils at the base of Hermitage, destemmed and aged in 20% new oak, this full-bodied, monster of a wine has sweet, velvety tannins, a huge mid-palate, and a gorgeous finish. This is up there with the finest vintages of this cuvée I've tasted. Give bottles 5-7 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 20-25 years. |

WA 99+ (2/2008): Lastly, from the very dome of the granite hill of Ermitage is the 2005 Ermitage l’Ermite. An extraordinarily powerful wine that probably needs 10-15 years in the bottle (last year I thought 20 was probably conservative), this is a 100-year wine and probably best appreciated by our descendants rather than anyone currently over the age of 30. Dense purple to the rim, with notes of crushed rock, charcoal, roasted meats, and enormous quantities of blue and black fruits, this wine is almost painfully rich and thick, with mouthsearing levels of tannin and zesty acidity. Monumental! Anticipated maturity: 2020-2080. |

JLL ****** (7/2011): (pre-bottle, final assemblage) Dark robe; strong oak is the first sensation, tarry-charry, deep cassis and freshly ground coffee beans, a Kenyan coffee depth. There is also a sense of Dijon black fruit liqueur and soft southern herbs. The usual intricate Ermite that poses questions, is not an open book, on the palate. Its grand merit is the finale, the final stages which are calm, balanced, classy. It starts on grainy, oaked black fruit, but the texture always leans towards the smooth. Energy on the finish is noted - it ends on the up, with a lot there. Best of the 2009s. WA 98+ (12/2011): Conservatively, the 2009 Ermitage l’Ermite (702 cases) needs 25-30 years of cellaring. Another monumental effort from Michel Chapoutier, it possesses copious notes of smoky asphalt, black truffles, pen ink, graphite and blackberry liqueur intermixed with hints of flowers and crushed rocks. Extremely full-bodied with abundant sweet tannins, amazing penetration on the palate and a long finish, this historic effort should age effortlessly for 50-100+ years. WS 98 (7/2012): This has a taut feel still, with an almost searing iron edge, but there's plenty of flesh in reserve, with plum compote, cherry pâte de fruit and anise notes that slowly fill in on the lengthy finish. Offers lots of grip too as this slowly unwinds with air, letting its iron edge stretch out even more. There's terrific spine and cut, with very impressive length. Best from 2016 through 2036. 702 cases made. JD 97 (3/2012): Seemingly the most structured and traditional of the Ermitages, the 2009 M. Chapoutier Ermitage l'Ermite comes from 80+ year-old vines and is 100% destemmed Syrah that’s aged in a combination of new and 1-year-old barrels. It possesses an absolutely brilliant array of black raspberries, smoke, graphite, mineral, and assorted floral characteristics on the nose, and this is followed up by a full-bodied, structured, dense, and layered Syrah that has masses of ripe tannin, gorgeous precision and focus, and a blockbuster finish. As with the Le Pavillon, this needs a decade or more in the cellar, and will have an incredibly long life ahead of it. VM 94+ (4/2012): Bright purple. Explosive aromas of candied red fruits, potpourri and incense, with a medicinal nuance adding complexity. Stains the palate with intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors lifted by smoky mineraity. Becomes spicier and deeper with air and finishes with superb clarity and lingering florality. By all means allow this to rest for at least another five years. |

WA 100 (12/2015): The wine of the vintage (and I’ll include all the wines of the northern Rhône, red and white in that grouping) is the 2014 Ermitage l’Ermite Blanc. Always made from 100% Marsanne that comes from the granite soils of the l’Hermite lieu-dit, it was aged 11 months in 25% new demi-muids before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Its medium-gold color is followed by a heavenly bouquet of liquid rock, hazelnut, caramelized pineapples, stone fruits and quince. Thick, unctuous, full-bodied, thrillingly pure and laser focused with a dry, blockbuster finish that just won’t quit, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring and will drink nicely over the following three or more decades. WS 97 (5/2017): Rich but racy, with a core of melon, white peach and yellow apple fruit streaming through, carried by a mouthwatering quinine note. The finish is gilded with honeysuckle and jasmine details, giving this lift and brightness. A light salted butter accent at the end brings you back for more. Drink now through 2030. 12 cases imported. |

JD 100 (2/2022): I was blown away by the 2020 Ermitage Le Méal Blanc, which is certainly the finest vintage of this cuvée I’ve tasted. From the pure south-facing Méal lieu-dit (which is the warmest terroir on Hermitage), it was vinified and aged 70% demi-muids (10% new) and 30% in stainless steel. Straight-up heavenly notes of white currants, powdered rock, celery seed, honeysuckle, and toasted almonds all define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with that rare mix of richness and freshness. Hermitage Blanc doesn’t get any better. I love this today, yet it will certainly benefit from a year or two of bottle age, drink well for 3-5 years, at which point, it’s probably best to wait until a solid 15 years after the vintage. |
