WA 92 (2/2003): The Cuvee Prestige is full-bodied, sexy, concentrated, and loaded with the essence of Provence. The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige smells like liqueur of black pepper intermixed with lavender, game, and black fruits. It tastes so much like Provence that one almost expects some of their famous miniature figurines (santons) to jump out of the glass. Ripe, layered, and spicy, with soaring aromatics, this fleshy, chewy 2000 is undoubtedly hiding some serious tannin. Anticipated maturity: now-2016. VM 88 (2/2003): Medium-deep color. Superripe aromas of plum, redcurrant, chocolate and spice cake, with a faint raisiny character. Sweet, open, easygoing and showy; quintessential ripe Chateauneuf texture and flavors. Complicating note of sweet herbs. Finishes with sweet tannins and moderate grip. I would have scored this wine even higher but for a slight suggestion of imperfect wood. |

JLL ****** (12/2011): (casks/barrel, bottling March 2012) dark robe; violet fineness of aroma floats above good black soil airs - the bouquet is well-rounded, has lots of depth and shape, shows licorice and tar in with meaty notes. The palate offers sleek black fruit that moves on through with some abandon, extends fully, and carries excitement, flair. It ends on a cleanly fruited, “up" note that is very 2010 in style. Good balance, with well inset tannins. There is a charcoal exit for now. The richness is well established and this has very appealing drive and life. From 2015. WA 96 (10/2012): An absolutely profound offering, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige requires 5-6 years of cellaring given its massive concentration and tannic structure. The wine was relatively closed the day I tasted it, but it did display an inky/purple color along with hints of camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice and espresso beans. Full-bodied and moderately tannic with gorgeous freshness, glycerin and a skyscraper-like texture, this superb cuvee should be at its finest between 2018-2030+. JD 95+ (9/2012): As with the 2011, the 2010 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Prestige shows lots of similarities to the Cuvee Reservee, yet has better tannin (which is saying something), as well as an old vine sappiness to the fruit and a touch more barrique. A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, and 5% Counoise and Vaccarese that is from 90+ year-old vines and aged in foudre and 1-year-old demi-muids, it has thrilling aromatics of kirsch liqueur, black raspberry, melted licorice, graphite, and copious amounts of spice and garrigue that just come soaring from the glass. Full-bodied, concentrated, and vividly fresh and focused, with masses of polished tannin and an elegant texture, this rock star 2010 needs 3-5 years of bottle age, yet will evolve gracefully for 2 decades or more. WS 95 (7/2013): This has power and guile, with dense layers of blackberry, Black Mission fig and black currant fruit lined with substantial but velvety tannins. The long, spice- and black tea—infused finish has a good bass line in the background. Best from 2017 through 2030. 200 cases imported. VM 93 (1/2013): Opaque purple. Explosive aromas of candied black and blue fruits, incense and lavender, with suave mocha and Indian spice nuances adding complexity. Lush and expansive but very lively, offering intense black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a strong floral pastille quality. Supple tannins add shape to a strikingly long, seamless and floral finish. |

VM 93 (1/2007): Deep ruby. Lush raspberry and cherry preserves on the nose, with hints of candied plum, espresso, flowers and dark chocolate. An impressively rich Chateauneuf, with powerful dark fruit flavors perked up by refreshing mineral lift on the back and nicely supported by supple tannins. Rich and chewy on the finish, with lingering notes of smoke, meat and cherry liqueur. Serious stuff, and in need of cellaring. Josh Raynolds. |

JD 96 (3/2011): Spicy and perfumed, the 2005 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret des Sabon is forward and accessible for the vintage, yielding gorgeously complex aromas of spiced red fruits, garrigue, flowers, and licorice that give way to more masculine aromas of iron, and dried blood over the course of the evening. These characteristics carry over to the palate where the wine is medium to full bodied, possessing an elegant, silky texture, perfect balance, and a very long, classy finish where more depth and structure emerge. While drinking beautifully now (there’s no harm in opening bottles now), this has the structure and balance to allow it to age gracefully for 15 to 20 years. |

WA 96 (10/2008): The inky/purple-hued, enormously endowed 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon is a monster of massive concentration and power. It reveals a suppleness to the tannins as well as a more evolved, accessible personality than the 2007, but, wow, it should keep for 20-25 years. VM 95 (1/2009): Vivid ruby. Knockout nose evokes cherry preserves, blackcurrant, incense, lavender and fresh bay. Deep, sweet and rich but possessing uncanny energy, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors, a velvety texture and great clarity. An exotic floral pastille quality gains strength with air and carries through an endless sappy finish. For a wine this powerful, the focus and balance are striking. WS 94 (11/2008): Gorgeous kirsch and mocha aromas lead the way for this silky, alluring version, loaded with raspberry ganache, fruitcake, melted red licorice and graphite notes. The long, silky finish has nice latent grip and buried minerality. Best from 2009 through 2028. 300 cases made. |

JD 98+ (8/2009): A gorgeous bottle of wine, the 2007 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret des Sabon is filled with blackberry and cassis fruit that’s intermixed with seared meat, blood, spice, licorice and garrigue aromas. With air, this picks up graphite, charcoal and mineral nuances and it’s perfumed, ripe and decadent. The palate is full bodied and perfectly balanced with stunning fruit, a thick texture, fresh acids and a blockbuster finish. I’d give this 5 to 7 years and then drink over the following 25+. WA 97+ (10/2009): More closed and restrained than normal is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon. The Sabon family has always been “secretive" about the blend used for this cuvee, but they do acknowledge that about 90% Grenache is combined with a field blend from vines over 100 years of age. Yields are microscopic, averaging 8-12 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine is aged one year in used 600-liter demi-muids. In the years it has been made (the first commercial vintage was 1998, although a small amount was made for the family in 1990, 1995, and 1996), this cuvee often borders on pure perfection (i.e., 1998 and 2001). The 2007 is too backward at this stage to go that far out on a limb, but it possesses a dense plum/purple color to the rim as well as an extraordinary perfume of cedarwood, tobacco leaf, creosote, licorice, black fruits, smoke, and a smell and taste of highly-charred meat with the essence of blood. This extraordinarily full-bodied, but forebodingly backward wine is more inaccessible than the 1998 or 2001 were at a similar stage of development, but it is an enormous, massively-endowed Chateauneuf du Pape that represents the concentrated blood of an old vineyard. The finish is virtually endless, lasting well past a minute. It will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 25-35 years thereafter. VM 96 (2/2010): Inky ruby. Exotic aromas of black raspberry, boysenberry, cassis, floral oils and incense, with notes of licorice and sassafras coming up with air. Fleshy, seductively sweet red and dark berry liqueur flavors stain the palate, with floral pastilles and succulent herbs providing added complexity. Very rich but also compellingly lithe and balanced, with superb finishing clarity and sexy floral and spice character. I'd bet on this wine being delicious throughout its life. WS 93 (11/2009): Silky, with a beautiful beam of kirsch running through pepper, incense, black tea and melted licorice notes. The long, supple finish has good latent grip, while maintaining its perfumy elegance. Drink now through 2020. 290 cases made. JLL *[*] (11/2009): 2 bottles tasted: Bottle 1: mostly dark robe. Nutty, Bretty front nose, parched stones, is yeasty. Possible TCA. Dry palate. Bottle 2: fair depth of robe. Mild black fruits, blackberry and agreeable aroma. The palate fruit is still rather flat, like Bottle 1 - slothful but steady wine of fair length. Has a modest, quite rounded end. Lacks depth and true character. Try from late 2010 or 2011. |

JD 97 (11/2022): Last of the wines from bottle, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Secret Des Sabon is a field blend of mostly Grenache that sees a touch of stem inclusion and aging all in oak tronconique tanks. A candidate for the wine of the vintage, it has a similar bouquet to the Prestige and has beautiful red and black fruits (even some blue fruits), flowers, garrigue, and spice. This carries to a full-bodied 2020 with a layered, seamless mouthfeel, moderate acidity, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It doesn’t get much better than this in 2020! Drink this sexy, seamless, incredibly compelling Châteauneuf du Pape over the coming 15+ years. |

WA 93 (10/2014): The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve is knockout stuff. Full-bodied, textured and yet still elegant and finesse-oriented, it gives up tons of ground pepper, spice, new leather and black cherry nuances. Made from 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, it has excellent concentration, mouth-filling levels of fruit and a big finish. Drink this beauty over the coming decade. VM 92 (2/2015): Inky ruby. Sexy, high-pitched aromas of fresh red berries, potpourri and star anise show a hint of smokiness. Silky and expansive on the palate, offering intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a strong suggestion of candied rose. Supple tannins meld smoothly with the wine's fruit on the incisive finish, which hangs on with very good tenacity and echoing floral character. Josh Raynolds. |
