JS 93 (3/2011): Slightly cooked fruit on the nose, with a toasted oak and meaty character. Full bodied, with round and chewy tannins and loads of fruit. Big and burly, I like it. Pull the cork after 2015. Find the wine. WS 93 (3/2006): Loads of licorice and currants follow through to a full-bodied palate, with lots of refined tannins and a long, long finish. This is very structured and layered. Beauty. Better than the 2000. Best after 2010. 8,330 cases made. WA 91+ (4/2006): The dense ruby/purple-colored 2003 is surprisingly fresh and crisp, displaying no signs of the vintage’s extreme heat. This full-bodied, powerful, rich, backward, dense, tannic effort reveals notes of Chinese black tea, creme de cassis, licorice, and melted chocolate. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the next two decades. NM 91 (4/2013): A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Carmenere and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2003 has a typical ’03 bouquet where there is a sense of some dead fruit. It is there, but it is not animated. The palate is sweet and sensual on the liquorice-tinged entry. There is more cohesion and freshness than many of its peers with a delightful balsamic tinged finish. This is very fine for the vintage, even if the bottle in London a couple of weeks before showed even better. Drink now-2020. VM 90 (5/2006): Medium ruby-red. Liqueur-like dark berries complicated by truffle, leather and cooler herbal notes. Fat, sweet and rich in a rather full-blown style. This was quite closed a year ago in barrel but now offers considerable early appeal. Finishes with suave tannins. |

JS 95 (2/2012): What an amazing nose of lead pencil shavings and dark fruits. Stunning. Full bodied, with super silky tannins and an amazing depth of fruit. Polished and refined. Gorgeous. 50% Cabernet Sauivgnon, 44% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, and 1% Carmaere. Best after 2017. WS 93 (3/2012): Juicy and nicely framed with a singed bay leaf note, which allows the medium-weight core of crushed plum and mulled fig to glide along nicely through the velvety finish. This fleshes out considerably as it sits in the glass, showing more layers of dark fruit and lingering minerality. This has some power in reserve, but lovely balance as well. Best from 2013 through 2024. NM 93 (4/2013): A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Carmenere and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2009 Clerc Milon has an extraordinarily concentrated bouquet with layers of ripe black fruit, glycerine, anis and kirsch that soars from the glass. The palate is full-bodied with very ripe black fruit laced with tar and liquorice. It has good acidity as one would expect from Clerc Milon with great weight and persistency. It is a “monster” wine...although it does not have the same class as the following millesime. Drink 2016-2030. WA 92 (2/2012): This fat, fleshy, dense purple-colored 2009 exhibits abundant notes of creme de cassis, roasted espresso, chocolate, berry fruit and underling hints of high quality, unsmoked cigar tobacco. Composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and a touch of Carmenere, it reveals plenty of structure and tannin, but the evolved aromatics offer a deceptive view that the wine will be drinkable early on. I do not think this is the case as the tannins kick in once it hits the palate. This seriously endowed, powerful, boisterous, muscular Pauillac should hit its prime between 2017 and 2035. VM 91+ (7/2012): Bright red-ruby. Brooding aromas and flavors of cassis, licorice, minerals and earthy dark tobacco. Juicy, spicy and tightly wound; dense and powerful but with the elegance of the year. Seriously concentrated wine with enticing sweetness currently overshadowed by a serious spine of dusty tannins. This deep, long Pauillac calls for at least six to eight years of cellaring. |

JS 93 (2/2015): Blueberry, chocolate and stone aromas with undertones of flowers follow through to a full body, cream tannins and a clean finish. Concentrated for the vintage. Pure fruit. Needs three to four years to soften. Better in 2017. WA 92 (4/2015): This is another strong effort from the Mouton Rothschild stable and its excellent administrator Philippe Dhalluin. The 2012 Clerc Milon has an almost blackish-blue opaque color, soft tannins, ripe notes of blackcurrants, licorice and subtle background oak. There is an attractive floral, licorice quality to the fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied and beautifully pure with ripe tannin. It is soft enough to be approachable in several years and should drink well for 20. NM 91-93 (4/2013): The Clerc Milon 2012 was tasted on two visits to the property, several days apart. It is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest percentage for 15 years and picked ten days later than the usual date), 29% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Carmenere and 9% Cabernet Franc picked between 1st and 16th October. It is matured in 40-45% new oak. Immediately, the aromatics are much more convincing than the d’Armailhac with ebullient ripe blackberry, raspberry and tobacco aromas that are well defined and vigorous. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins and well integrated new oak that is in synch with the fruit. This is a superb Clerc-Milon for the vintage with a silky smooth, harmonious finish. Excellent. WS 90 (3/2015): Tightly wound, but with an ample core of blackberry and black currant fruit waiting in reserve, accented by lively briar and singed spice notes. Reveals good, graphite-edged grip through the finish, with a hint of cassis bush at the very end. Should unwind nicely in the cellar. Best from 2017 through 2022. VM 88-90 (5/2013): (60% cabernet sauvignon, 29% merlot, 9% cabernet franc, 1% petit verdot and 1% carmenère): Bright ruby-red. Red berries and sweet spices on the perfumed, open nose, complicated by cocoa and coffee nuances. Bright and fresh on the palate, with a spicy mineral overlay to the red and dark berry flavors. Finishes sweet, supple and long, with smooth tannins. This potentially Outstanding Clerc Milon comes across as fleshy and rich; I would have guessed it contained a lot more merlot than 29%. Very good stuff in the context of the vintage. |

JS 94-95 (4/2017): Refined and ultra-fine with a linear and polished character. Full-bodied, yet tight and racy. A classy and sophisticated young wine. WS 93-96 (4/2017): Very fresh in feel, with bright cassis and cherry fruit racing along an iron edge. Shows a good sleek feel through the finish and a light tug of earth at the very end. A vivacious and delicious wine in the making. |

WA 92-94+ (6/2020): The blend this year is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, harvested from the 19th of September to the 9th of October. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Clerc Milon starts out a little closed and broody, offering notes of tar, chargrill, tapenade and Marmite toast over an emerging core of stewed plums, black cherries and kirsch with a touch of garrigue. The medium-bodied palate delivers loads of freshness with crunchy black fruits and a lively line, backed up by grainy tannins, finishing long and savory. JD 93-95 (6/2020): The top wine, the 2019 Château Clerc Milon is based on 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. More intensity and dark fruit emerge from the glass, and it has an elegant, medium to full-bodied style as well as classy Pauillac spice, cedar pencil, tobacco, and assorted darker fruits. It reminds me of the 2014 with its more elegant, charming style. JS 94-95 (6/2020): A very tight, precise red with super fine tannins that are tight and focused. Medium-to full-bodied with linear tannins and a bright, vivid finish. It’s leaner and refined. Precise and driven. This is a very cabernet sauvignon-driven Clerc with 72% cabernet sauvignon. |

JD 94-96 (5/2023): As to the Grand Vin 2022 Château Clerc Milon, it reminds me of the 2018 with its full-bodied, ripe, yet elegant style. Cassis, graphite, espresso roast, and lead pencil notes define the aromatics, and it has a beautiful spine of acidity, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It shows the ripe, exuberant yet structured style of the vintage beautifully. The blend is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Carmenère, harvested between the 9th and 26th of September, with an alcohol content of 14.5%, a pH of 3.83, and an IPT of 74. The élevage here is 55% new French oak. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes. WA 93-95 (5/2023): The 2022 Clerc Milon is beautiful, offering up aromas of cherries, raspberries and plums mingled with hints of pencil shavings and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's taut and lively, with a vibrant core of fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins. Its clay-limestone terroir lends it a distinctive signature that sets it apart from the rest of the portfolio. |

These carry to a medium to full-bodied, focused, elegant, yet beautifully concentrated red that has ripe tannins, beautiful overall balance, and outstanding length. Based on 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Carmenere and Petit Verdot, it’s aging in 55% new barrels and hit 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.83. VM 92-94 (4/2024): The 2023 Clerc Milon was picked from September 7 to 29 and is matured in 55% new oak. It has much more fruit concentration on the nose than the Pastorelle—quite precocious, with blackberry and cassis fruit. It's floral and more flamboyant than the d'Armailhac. The palate is very well balanced with a slightly creamy texture and a lovely mouthfeel. Its concentration is neatly counterbalanced by the acidity, and it feels very harmonious and long on the finish. Superb. If Mouton-Rothschild is beyond your budget—yes, I am familiar with that feeling—then this is where you should look. Neal Martin.
