WS 94 (12/2014): A perfect storm of bright cherry, black currant, spice and mineral flavors, this offers a silky texture and innate power in the form of intensity and gripping, well-integrated tannins. Offers fine harmony and expression, and is surprisingly open now, with plenty of time to develop. Best from 2016 through 2032. 250 cases made.
VM 93+ (3/2013): Good full red. Very subdued nose hints at redcurrant, spicy herbs and underbrush. Highly concentrated but youthfully tight, with a lightly saline quality to the complex flavors of blueberry, wild herbs, sandalwood and mocha. Just this side of thick but its superb balance of sweetness and acidity keeps it vibrant in the mouth. The long, ripely tannic finish features an exhilarating salty minerality. I may be underrating this. |

WA 93 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is a bit unusual for this site. The fruit shows more depth, concentration and overt richness than most wines from this vineyard. The signature perfume emerges with time, but this remains a wine essentially built on an intense core of fruit. Groffier used 10% stems here. The finish shows a little heat, which is the only thing that keeps the score from going higher. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

BH 91 (1/2012): (from a 1.07 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines.) In contrast to its 1er siblings, this is really quite pretty and while there was a trace of reduction at first, it disappeared within 3 minutes so it's a non-issue for the Amoureuses. Otherwise, the nose is really quite pretty with the hallmark spice and wet stone nuances that add depth to the ripe yet cool and elegant red berry fruit aromas. There is a supple and very Chambollesque quality to the refined and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that offer good if not truly sensational depth and length. This is also relatively forward and while it will certainly age, I was surprised at how civilized it is already. Drink 2016+. |

| VM 92+ (4/2013): Bright, full red, less ruby than the Sentiers. Musky aromas and flavors of raspberry, redcurrant, smoke, spices and white pepper. At once silky and juicy, with superb intensity and energy to leaven its seriously rich texture. Very long, powerful Amoureuses with a strong tannic spine for extended aging. |

| VM 89-91 (1/2015): (vinified with 70% whole clusters; 40% new oak; 37 hectoliters per hectare produced): Dark bright red. Pure, vibrant aromas of black cherry, licorice and game, lifted by a floral tonote. Sappy, saline and intense, showing early sex appeal and balance to its high-pitched yet fully ripe dark fruit and licorice flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and very good length. (Incidentally, Groffier's Bourgogne Pinot Noir, frequently an outperformer for its modest appellation, is a potential knockout in 2013. Aromas of ripe black raspberry, violet and game lead to a sweet, lush palate that shows serious muscle and cut to the spicy dark fruit flavors.) |
