BH 89-91 (1/2015): (from 4 different parcels scattered above and below the 1ers and the blend of vines averages about 35 years of age.) Reduction flattens the nose but there is good freshness and energy to the supple and round medium-bodied flavors that also possess only a touch of backend rusticity on the complex, balanced and impressively persistent finish for a villages level wine. This is really quite good for what it is and worth your attention. Drink 2019+. Outstanding Top Value! WA 86-88 (12/2014): The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges Village had a slight reduction on the nose. The palate is supple in the mouth with crisp red cherry and strawberry fruit. There is decent depth here, a little disjointed at the moment but it should marry together nicely by the time of bottling in January. VM 86-88 (1/2015): Healthy bright red. Slightly reduced aromas of bitter cherry and lees. Sweet but reduced, with cranberry and raspberry fruit flavors complicated by earthy and saline traces. Boasts good lift but finishes with slightly tart-edged acidity. |

BH 88-90 (1/2022): A mentholated top note is present on the markedly ripe aromas of cassis, earth and bitter chocolate. The rich, velvet-textured and concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess pretty good verve and length on the slightly warm finale. This will need to develop better depth to merit the upper-end of my projected range. Drink 2026+. |

WA 91-93 (2/2012): The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges is the first wine in this lineup that shows the structure of the vintage. Freshly cut flowers, minerals, graphite and black cherries are woven into a textured fabric of notable class. I especially like its energy and drive. A precise, finely-chiseled finish rounds things out nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. VM 91-93 (2/2012): Good full red. Redcurrant, raspberry, crushed stone and smoky minerality on the rather serious nose. At once silky and tangy in the mouth, with raspberry and stone flavors dominating. A step up in breadth and dimension from the foregoing wines, offering lovely inner-mouth perfume. Very representative of the south side of the village: "never with explosive fruit early," notes Gouges. Has the firm tannin/acid structure to age. This large Clos comprises 3.8 hectares of vines. BH 90-92 (1/2012): (a 3.5 ha monopole with 30+ year old vines). Reduction dominates the nose. By contrast to the funky nose, there is a lovely inner mouth perfume to the precise, intense and vibrant middle weight plus flavors that possess good volume. There is admirable persistence on the quite firm finish that is at once pure and actually rather refined, which is not always the case with this wine. Worth a look. Drink 2022+. |

BH 89-92 (1/2021): Firm reduction blocks an evaluation of the nose today though the underlying fruit does seem ripe. There is excellent vibrancy to the subtly mineral-driven larger-scaled flavors that possess better depth and persistence on the muscular, serious and youthfully austere finale. This is very Nuits in character without being overly rustic. Drink 2031+. |

BH 90-93 (1/2022): Very ripe yet still reasonably fresh aromas are comprised by notes of roasted plum, black cherry, cassis and earth. The dense, powerful and muscular broad-shouldered flavors are supported by a very firm tannic spine on the robust, serious and very compact finale. This is quite impressive though certainly not typical. Drink 2035+. |

NM 92-94 (12/2017): The 2016 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Pruliers, aged in 20% new oak like Gouges’ other premier crus, has more red fruit on the nose than the Clos des Porrets, a little ferrous in style with subtle damp earthy aromas developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin that feels a little chalkier and sharper at the moment. This is replete with wonderful freshness and tension toward the finish that is tensile and linear, captivating from start to finish. Superb. BH 91-93 (1/2018): (a 2 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines.) A beautifully layered nose offers up notes of both red and black pinot fruit, spice, warm earth and evident sauvage nuances. The rich, delicious and caressing medium weight plus flavors possess a velvety mid-palate mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with the very firm, saline and lingering finish. This is muscular but not really rustic. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

BH 90-93 (1/2019): (a 1.9 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines.) This too is noticeably reduced and aromatically unreadable today. Otherwise there is more volume and mid-palate density to the bigger and mostly muscular flavors that possess a less refined mouthfeel on the powerful, driving and more obviously structured finale. This is really quite good though at least some patience will be required. Drink 2027+. Outstanding! |

VM 92-94 (12/2020): The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was a little more reduced than Gouges’s other cuvées, opening gradually to reveal blackberry, wild hedgerow and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lithe and silky in the mouth, and fleshy with a judicious touch of white pepper toward the finish. The shortfall in grip and substance is sufficiently compensated with elegance. Neal Martin. BH 90-92 (1/2021): This is also quite firmly reduced and unreadable at present. Otherwise there is equally good energy and delineation to the slightly more refined though still dense and muscular medium-bodied flavors that possess just a bit more depth on the similar finish that is muscular, serious and youthfully austere if not especially rustic. Drink 2031+. |

VM 94+ (4/2008): Saturated ruby-red. Explosive, multidimensional nose offers raspberry, dark cherries macerated in alcohol, minerals and leather, with a treble note of citrus skin. Like liquid silk in the mouth; already shows its great depth, but the highly complex, soil-inflected flavors of black raspberry, dark chocolate, leather and fresh blood are still youthfully reserved. Most impressive today on the remarkably sappy, precise finish, which builds slowly and subtly and is given even greater penetration and grip by a suggestion of grapefruit. I could drink this wine every night of the week-and probably for the next two decades. BH 94 (1/2008): As it always is, this is certainly more elegant and slightly more complex as well than the Vaucrains with dense but pretty red fruit aromas that introduce pure and refined medium full flavors that are complex and balanced on the gorgeously long finish. This is brimming with potential as well and while it too will require plenty of patience, its class and grace could allow it to be approached in its youth and then a few years later as it ages. In a word, brilliant. Outstanding! Drink 2017+ WA 92-94 (6/2007): The 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges displays a fascinating nose of black cherry, wood smoke, sandalwood, and sea breeze. Rich, deep, charred meat, toasted nut, lightly-cooked black fruit and myriad mineral notes lead to a palate-saturating spread of flavors, finishing vividly bright and above all - with its elements of wet stone, salts, iodine and ore-like if ineffable essences - memorably mineral. Fine-grained in tannin and formidably concentrated, this should be at least a twenty-year wine, revealing plenty of additional nuance along the way. The 2004 version, incidentally, is also serious and worth tracking down and cellaring for a few years. |

BH 92 (1/2011): A more elegant but cool and reserved nose of exceptionally pure red berry and plum aromas also possesses notes of earth and underbrush that transfer seamlessly over to the rich, full and focused medium weight plus flavors that are actually quite supple and round but where this really distinguishes itself from the Vaucrains is the seriously impressive depth on the moderately austere and mildly herbal but hugely long finish. Like the Vaucrains, this will need plenty of time. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! WA 92 (6/2010): Another vividly red-fruited as well as red meaty and tight, bright, yet silken-textured essay, the Gouges 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges incorporates piquant sage, black pepper, toasted nuts, salt, and fruit pits in its long, lip-smacking finish. There are low-toned dimensions of roasted red meats and peat as well as an emerging, decadent inner-mouth aura of floral perfume that take one beyond the complexities of the corresponding Vaucrains, and at the same time - notwithstanding bright fresh fruit vivacity - lend a sense of substantiality note found in any of the other Gouges 2008s. I would expect this to perform well for 15 or more years. VM 92+ (4/2011): Moderately saturated medium red. Tight, pure nose offers restrained scents of cherry, flowers and peppery spices. Then sweet but taut in the mouth; impressively concentrated owing to the very low yield here but quite closed and hard to taste today. Perfumed and powerful wine but ungiving, and showing less sweetness than the Vaucrains. I'd hold this for five years. |

VM 94 (1/2022): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru presents a clean, crisp bouquet of wild strawberry and raspberry fruit that blossoms in the glass, becoming more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity and a nice underlying bitterness, though there is a very slight attenuation on the finish. Otherwise, this is a fine, classically styled Nuits Saint-Georges. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Neal Martin. |

VM 94-96 (12/2020): The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a very well-defined, complex bouquet that puts the preceding Les Vaucrains in its place. Here there is clearly greater focus and terroir expression, subtle sous-bois scents permeating the black and red fruit. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, seamlessly integrated new oak and a silky-smooth finish exerting judicious grip. Very classy. Neal Martin. BH 91-94 (1/2021): Here too there is just enough wood to mention on the equally ripe liqueur-like aromas of red and dark berries, spice and pungent earth scents. The slightly sleeker and tautly muscular flavors aren't quite as big-bodied though there is plenty of size and weight to them while complementing the structured, serious and mineral-driven finale. This too will require extended patience if you wish to see it at its apogee. Drink 2036+. |

VM 92 (4/2011): Good bright red. Complex, highly aromatic nose offers redcurrant, tobacco, game, iron, leather and peppery herbs. Sweeter in the middle and more powerful than the Pruliers but with lively spiciness and peppery lift. Finishes ripe and long. A lovely wine, seemingly less austere than the 2009 version. WA 91 (6/2010): Raw red meat and tart cherry in the nose of Gouges’s 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains are accented with sage, white pepper, and salinity, all of which combine in the mouth for a pungency, vivacious, saliva-inducing, and deeply-concentrated impression. Here are both the meat and the meat-tenderizing acids, herbs, and brine in one, handy glass! This displays a surprisingly caressing, silken texture to compliment its brightness, and finishes with vibratory intensity as well as invigoration and refreshment such as one doesn’t expect from its genre. The strongly mineral and carnal elements as well as the slightly acerbic personality will excite some of us more than they will others. I think this will prove delightfully and intriguingly versatile over the next 12-15 years. BH 91-93 (1/2010): (a 1 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age). Gouges noted that they harvested only 18 hl/ha in 2008. Mild reduction does not completely hide the herb-infused ripe red berry fruit aromas that are nuanced by hints of earth and underbrush, both of which can be found on the rich, full and very serious flavors that are tautly muscular and possess real tension on the mouth coating, concentrated and impressively persistent finish. This is not a big Vaucrains by the usual standards of this wine but it's focused and powerful. Drink 2018+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 91-93 (1/2019): (from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age.) Slightly riper aromas of plum liqueur, violet, warm earth and plenty of sauvage character lead to intense and notably dense broad-shouldered flavors that display first-rate power on the serious and youthfully austere finish. BH 91-94 (1/2021): Discreet wood influence surrounds the notably ripe and fresh aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, earth and evident sauvage wisps. There is excellent richness and volume to the suave, round and seductive mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that contrast markedly with the very firmly structured, youthfully austere and impressively persistent finish.
