BH 93 (10/2005): Big, strapping, explosive aromas of black fruit, earth and notes of blueberries all trimmed in a touch of wood toast lead to sappy, full-bodied, rich, wonderfully intense, powerfully structured flavors that go on and on. Exceptionally dense for the vintage with dusty structure and superb balance which should permit it to age for years. Consistent notes. Drink 2010+. VM 93 (4/2004): Saturated ruby-tinged red. Complex aromas of black fruits, mocha and underbrush. Sweet, dense and sappy, with a deep core of spicy fruit. Seems less closed today than most of Roumier's other 2001s owing to its absence of hard edges. But this very serious, thick wine really needs five or six years of bottle aging and should last well. Finishes with terrific persistence. WS 92 (5/2004): Wonderful, both structured and rich, with wild berries, raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied and tannic, but approachable, as the tannins are well-integrated. Wet earth and mineral complexity on the lingering finish. Best from 2006 through 2012. 500 cases made. WA 89-91 (6/2003): The medium-bodied, medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Bonnes Mares is an Outstanding wine. It explodes from the glass with candied black fruit aromas and slathers the palate with its deep, suave, violet-laced jammy blackberries. Armed with first-rate depth of fruit, this friendly, silky-textured offering displays a long finish packed with ripe tannin enveloped in black cherries. Projected maturity: now-2010. |

VM 84 (6/2020): The 2004 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru offers light, smudged mulberry and decayed leaf scents on a nose that pales against Christophe Roumier’s other vintages. There is something quite Oriental about the aromas, (hoisin emerges with time) but also the greenness that I remember when I first tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins. Quite a hollow Bonnes-Mares, to be frank, ending in a severely attenuated and raw finish. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London. Neal Martin. BH 90 (4/2007): A discreet hint of wood spice frames a potent mix of violet, red and black fruits, earth, herb aromas and hints of game that give way to textured, sappy, firm and intense flavors that are both serious and firmly structured. This will require time to come around though there is reasonably good phenolic ripeness and, in the context of the vintage, solid finishing power and pop. Drink 2012+. |

WA 98+ (4/2012): Roumier’s 2009 Bonnes-Mares is without question one of the wines of the vintage. Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins provide the backdrop for the highly nuanced, expressive aromas and flavors that emerge from the glass. All the elements are in the right place in this extraordinary, moving wine. At times the Bonnes-Mares comes across as very powerful, at other times it is quite sensual. In other words, it is pure magic in the glass. Burgundy fans will flock to the Musigny because of its rarity but there is a very real possibility that the Bonnes-Mares will outshine it over time. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. WS 98 (6/2012): Complex, fragrant aromas of sandalwood, jasmine and black cherry, with flavors to match, converge in this tightly grained, muscular red. Detailed and pure, showing balance and energy. The lingering finish promises the full potential, leading to a long sweet fruit and mineral aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2036. 0105 cases imported. BH 96 (1/2012): This is also remarkably fresh with very ripe but not over ripe aromas of cassis, spice, stone and raspberry liqueur. There is a palpable sense of energy running through the rich, powerful and brooding broad-shouldered flavors that benefit from a huge dollop of dry extract that pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the explosive and youthfully austere finish that possesses genuinely Outstanding length. I very much like the balance here and this should age effortlessly for decades. Drink: 2027+ VM 95+ (4/2012): Bright medium red. Distinctly blacker on the nose than the Amoureuses, offering scents of blackberry, blueberry and peony. Wonderfully sweet and energetic on the palate, showing terrific stuffing but coming across as tightly coiled today. At once creamy and structured for long aging. Most impressive today on the firmly tannic, palate-staining finish. Roumier compared this to the 1990 version but says this one has firmer tannins. A great and long-lived wine in the making. |

BH 95 (1/2014): ( from a 1.5 ha parcel that is roughly divided in .90 ha of terres rouges and .60 ha of terres blanches, the latter of which has the slightly older vines; in 2011 the blend is 55% terres blanches and 45% terres rouges.) This is also brilliantly perfumed if not quite as elegant as the Amoureuses with its broad ranging nose of earth, red currant, plum liqueur and lovely floral notes. There is a firm minerality to the remarkably rich, powerful and concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess both excellent volume and first-rate punch on the hugely long and youthfully austere finish. This is a stunner of a wine that will need pretty much all of 15 years, and perhaps even 20, to arrive at its full majority. Drink 2028+. WS 95 (8/2014): This seductive red offers black cherry, sandalwood and floral aromas and flavors balanced on a rich texture. Dense, featuring lively acidity, with well-integrated tannins providing support on the long and concentrated finish. Best from 2017 through 2030. 70 cases imported. VM 94+ (3/2014): Good dark red. Musky, lively aromas of raspberry, cherry liqueur and bitter chocolate. Silky red berry, red cherry and brown spice flavors are leavened by penetrating acidity, with a hint of woodsmoke adding complexity. Very sappy grand cru with good medicinal reserve; a bit compact today. This is darker in its fruit quality than the foregoing samples and the solid tannins are nobler. Very long on the aftertaste. WA 90 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Christophe Roumier’s 2011 Bonnes-Mares comes across a little lean on the nose, although there is fine delineation – distinct marine scents emerging with time while there is just a touch of reduction. The palate is medium-bodied and quite masculine for a Bonnes-Mares. There is more reserve compared to its peers, but it is undeniably succinctly focused with an abiding sense of symmetry on the finish. Excellent, but at the moment it feels rugged for a Bonnes-Mares. I suspect that it will improve with 3-4 years in bottle. |

VM 88 (1/2018): Bright, dark red. Sexy scents of dark raspberry and spices. Juicy and energetic, with good sappy concentration and elegance for Bourgogne Rouge. Has the structure to support several years of aging. Alas, Roumier only makes about 2,000 bottles of this wine annually--and none in the frost vintage of 2016. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 87 (1/2020): Pretty and fresh red cherry and purple fruit aromas, in particular plum, suffuse the earthy and softly spicy nose. The attractively textured flavors possess a lovely vibrancy before concluding in a complex, lingering and mildly rustic finish where the only fault is a hint of warmth. This is a fine and firm Bourgogne and recommended. |

BH 87-89 (1/2020): An attractively fresh and ripe nose displays layered aromas of plum, black cherry and a whiff of earth. Chambolle Musigny |

WA 90 (6/2010): Roumier's 2008 Chambolle-Musigny - tasted soon after its January bottling - is scented with fresh cherry, its pits, and red currant in a manner that presages its brightness and piquancy on the palate. Forest floor and clean meaty elements as well as hints of cinnamon and nutmeg emerge as this opens to the air, all nicely complimenting the wine's fresh fruit edge, as does its incipiently silken texture. This finishes long and vibrant, with alluring spice and pure fruit. I would plan to enjoy it over the next half dozen years. VM 89 (4/2011): Good medium red. Pungent aromas of red berries, spices and underbrush, lifted by a floral nuance. Precise and juicy in the mouth, with lovely lift and strong floral character to the strawberry and raspberry flavors. Finishes with bright acidity and lovely length. Quite accessible today: Roumier believes the 2008s will never totally shut down. Stephen Tanzer. WS 89 (12/2011): Offering a vibrant mouthful of strawberry and raspberry, this red is racy and focused. There's an intensity to the wine, and the acidity drives the long, spice-tinged finish. Best from 2012 through 2020. 130 cases imported. BH 88 (1/2011): (contains some premier cru juice from Fuees). A high-toned, perfumed and very fresh red pinot fruit nose introduces precise medium-bodied flavors that are well-detailed, pure and very Chambolle in basic character and offer a discreet touch of minerality on the supple but solidly complex finish. A lovely, forward and understated villages. |

BH 88-91 (1/2014): (contains some premier cru juice from Fuees.) Here too there is enough reduction to knock down the nose. There is a lovely texture to the elegant mineral-inflected and precise middle weight flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the balanced and solidly persistent finish. This is very Chambolle in style. Drink 2018+. |

BH 88-90 (1/2016): (contains some premier cru juice from Fuees.) This is also quite fresh with its more elegant array of red and blue pinot fruit, rose petal and soft spice nuances. BH 92 (1/2008): (From a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age.) A somewhat riper and highly expressive nose that is even more elegant puts on a display of complex aromas of red and black pinot fruit nuanced by distinct floral notes, especially violets, that precede the rich and intensely mineral-inflected medium full flavors carrying a wonderful sense of underlying tension that focuses the precise and explosive finish. A terrific wine that will age for years and highly recommended. Drink 2013+. Outstanding! |

WA 92 (12/2009): A complex aromatic melange of smoked meat; sauteed mushroom; diverse, lightly-cooked berries; and nutmeg greets the taster from the glass of Roumier 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras. A tart edge to the fruit and savory salinity lend some of the same invigoration that characterized other wines in this collection, but here allied to deep meatiness and an underlying impression of wet stone. The tannins are superbly refined and the finish penetrating and dynamic in its interplay of fungal, fruity, mineral, carnal, and spicy notes. Here is another instance of the vigor and almost airy openness of the vintage beautifully expressed. I suspect this will be worth following for 6-8 years, but make sure not to deprive yourself of the pleasure of its youthful charms. WS 92 (6/2009): A softness around the edges in this cherry- and berry-infused red offsets the firm structure that emerges later. Floral and spice notes add interest, and this lingers nicely. Best from 2011 through 2021. 44 cases imported. VM 90+ (4/2009): Good medium red. Aromas of candied raspberry, blueberry and blood orange. Silky and suave, with pure if youthfully imploded flavors of red berries and brown spices. In a rather strict, minerally style, finishing with firm tannic spine and impressive length and strength. BH 90 (1/2009): Here the nose is distinctly more elegant and while there is a background trace of herbal present, it's very discreet and does not detract from the very pure and airy red pinot fruit and mineral notes that are picked up on the equally mineral-infused, textured and intense flavors that possess beautiful detail and cut on the vibrant and wonderfully long finish. This possesses real verve and excellent length and if it can add depth, it may surprise to the upside plus it is very Chambolle in character. Drink 2013+. |

BH 92 (1/2012): (from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age) This is also ripe but definitely fresher with lovely purity to the enveloping red pinot liqueur-like aromas that are trimmed in both spice and mineral nuances. The detailed, intense and stylish medium-bodied flavors brim with plenty of dry extract, all wrapped in an explosive, focused and lingering finish. A ripe but still classic Les Cras that is really quite classy. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

WA 92 (2/2014): The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras has blacker and earthier fruit compared to the village cru, but here there is more volume and intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly grainy tannins. There is lovely balance here: a little more forward than I was expecting, but generous with impressive complexity on the finish. This forms a fine introduction to the delights of Christophe’s wines. Drink 2016-2030. VM 92 (4/2014): Good bright red. Exotic red berry liqueur, flowers, passion fruit and peach on the nose. Fat and sweet for this cru; softer and less refined than the 2012 version. Still, this shows better inner-mouth tension than the Combottes and finishes firmer, with chewy tannins. WS 91 (8/2014): A broad, rich style, sporting violet, black currant, black cherry and spice flavors. The structure is both vibrant and firm, showing fine balance and grip on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2030. 35 cases imported. BH 91 (1/2014): (From a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age). A gorgeously perfumed and intensely floral-suffused nose evidences hints of stone, red berries, anise and a bit of earth. There is really lovely detail and intensity to the precise, dusty and tension-filled medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality on the mouth coating, linear, mildly austere and highly persistent finish where a saline nuance appears. This is quite good. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

BH 91-93 (1/2016): (from a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age.) Firm reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background though it does seem ripe. WS 95 (5/2020): A well-defined red, with great focus and precision to the black cherry, black currant, violet and stony, mineral flavors. Ends with a chalky sensation, lending gravitas to the finish and overall impression. Best from 2023 through 2045. VM 94 (2/2021): The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a dreamy bouquet that gushes with brambly red berry fruit, redcurrant, cranberry and, to be exact, Tiptree “Little Scarlet” strawberry jam, all beautifully defined. The palate is plush, velvety smooth, very refined with pitch perfect acidity. This Les Cras displays admirable depth, moving into more red Morello cherry and light allspice notes towards the delicate and yet persistent finish. Iron fist/velvety glove and all that... This is a brilliant Chambolle-Musigny from Christophe Roumier and it soared even higher the following day, gaining more nuance and filling out further on the finish. Neal Martin. |
