VM 90-92 (1/2018): Good bright red. Distinctly dark aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol convey a medicinal cast. Then fine-grained, suave and sweet, with flavors of black cherry, blackberry and licorice pastille. Considering the wine's medicinal coolness, this midweight is also quite ripe. Finishes with harmonious tannins that saturate the tongue and build. Lovely subtle length; spreads out subtly to saturate the palate. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90-92 (1/2018): Moderate wood influence can be found on the overtly sauvage-inflected red currant, plum and earth-scented nose. The supple and round medium-bodied flavors possess a velvet-textured mid-palate that is really quite seductive though the natural muscle of a Gevrey 1er shows up on the saline and ever-so-mildly rustic finale. This quality effort is firm enough to require at least 5+ years of cellaring and it will need at least a decade to arrive at its apogee. (Drink starting 2026) |

BH 90-93 (1/2019): Once again there is a lovely coolness and restraint to the quite pure aromas of gently earthy red and dark currant scents. The vibrant and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors possess a caressing and rich mouthfeel though the solidly long and complex finish progressively tightens up as it sits on the palate. This should be approachable young but amply reward mid-term cellaring. |

BH 90 (1/2004): Deeper and more textured than the Champeaux with a perfumed nose of ripe cherries and raspberries and wonderfully detailed, medium weight, mineral-laden flavors brimming with pinot extract and a touch of earth. There is Outstanding intensity here and a long, lingering finish. As is typical of the Fourrier wines, this is not especially big or structured but there is elegance to burn and the finesse and harmony are stunning. Drink 2007-2015+ |

VM 95 (3/2013): Medium red. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, dried rose, smoke and pepper. Deep, dry and intense on the palate, with compelling inner-mouth perfume to the raspberry and orange zest flavors. The wine's exhilarating sugar/acid balance and peppery lift give the very long, savory finish Outstanding verve. Tannins are utterly suave. BH 93 (1/2013): (from .89 ha parcel planted in 1910.) This is also unusually expressive at this early stage with wonderfully layered aromas of floral nuances, raspberry, cherry, plum, stone and earth. There is excellent volume and richness to the strikingly well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that ooze a fine minerality on the refined, mouth coating and explosively long finish. This faultlessly well-balanced wine should age for years if desired though be approachable after a decade. Be sure to decant this as the gas is apparent. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

BH 92-95 (1/2014): (from .89 ha parcel planted in 1910). This is more elegant still with an exuberantly spicy, airy and cool mix of raspberry, cherry, red currant and plenty of wet stone character. There is superb intensity to the mineral-driven, pure and ultra-refined middle weight flavors that are shaped by very fine-grained tannins on the moderately austere, balanced and wonderfully persistent finish. A classic Clos St. Jacques. Drink 2024+. Don't miss! Outstanding! WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques has a very precise bouquet with raspberry pastille, wild strawberry and a distant marine influence that is very pure. The palate is medium-bodied with a clean and pure opening, the mineralite only surfacing midway and then flourishing towards the complex, quite compelling finish. This is a very nuanced Clos Saint Jacques with a long spice tinged tail on the aftertaste. VM 94-97 (2/2014): Bright dark, fresh red. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, minerals, rose petal and blood orange. Incredibly sappy, vibrant and imploded, showing Outstanding lift and cut to its red berry and floral flavors. Not quite opulent but utterly seamless wine, finishing with explosive length and fine-grained tannins. This wonderfully juicy Clos Saint-Jacques is hiding its underlying density today. This is now 12.8% alcohol, without chaptalization. |

VM 94 (3/2017): Healthy medium red. Sexy, complex aromas of strawberry, crushed stone and rose petal convey a captivating combe coolness. Wonderfully concentrated and bright, combining classic 2014 salty minerality with superb fruit intensity. Boasts the kind of restrained generosity of fruit that reminds me of the '99s in the early going. A compelling, saline vin de terroir but not a powerhouse. The long, rising finish features very suave tannins. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 96 (12/2023): The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, which I never tasted from barrel, has a sublime bouquet that is the paragon of Pinot's transparency. Perfumed with joyous red fruit, crushed stone and a touch of wilted rose petal, the aromatics whisk you to the famed walled vineyard. The palate is beautifully balanced with slightly chalky tannins and a surfeit of energy and tension. It’s quite linear and strict toward the finish that just loses its initial crystalline quality. But still, this is a very great wine from Jean-Marie Fourrier. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin. |

WA 92-93 (4/2007): The 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe aux Moines smells of bouillon, game, spices, fresh red fruits and a hint of caramel. In the mouth, it offers texturally more refined and more roasted, rich variations on the meaty, mineral themes introduced by Fourrier’s Les Goulots. For all of its ripeness and chalky, stony mineral density, and marrowy depth, this wine (like its siblings, hovering around a mere 13% alcohol) displays dynamism and lift. BH 91-93 (1/2007): Lower register aromas that feature more earth and underbrush emphases on the otherwise pretty red berry fruit aromas that precede the rich, full and sleekly muscled full-bodied flavors that are wonderfully complex, deep and impressively long. This is unusually stylish for this cru as it offers both style and real punch. Swwet spot Outstanding. Drink: 2014+. VM 91-94 (4/2007): Bright red-ruby. Raspberry, smoke, spices, mocha and gibiers on the scented, complex, slightly exotic nose; this could only be from Gevrey. Chewy and tactile, with tangy berry and spice flavors complemented by sweet oak. Perfumed and quite fine on the very long finish, which features complex spice notes, a distinctly rocky character and superb energy. Very firmly structured wine from a heat trap of a vineyard where Fourrier has occasionally come across snakes. This was unusually aromatic even in the vat, like the '99, noted Fourrier. |

VM 93+? (4/2013): Medium red. Cherry, earth, mocha and game on the soil-inflected nose. A step up in silkiness of texture from the tighter Goulots, offering good thickness to its pungent red fruit and spice flavors. This fat, sweet but youthfully backward Gevrey finishes with broad, fine-grained, thoroughly buffered tannins and a salty nuance. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 92+ (1/2018): Medium red. Lively perfume of raspberry, spices and dried flowers complicated by leather and soil tones. Supple on entry, then quite backward--in fact almost austere--in the middle palate, less open to inspection today than the Champeaux. Conveys a touch of rusticity to its flavors of leather, spices, earth and minerals. This classically dry wine will need at least five or six years in the cellar to uncoil. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 90-92 (1/2018): Moderate amounts of wood and menthol characters serve as a less than neutral backdrop for the earth and sauvage-inflected dark pinot fruit-suffused nose. The supple, round and unusually forward flavors possess a seductive mouthfeel though the finish immediately tightens up which suggests that this will need the better part of a decade to reach its apogee. BH 90-93 (1/2009): A strikingly layered nose of plum, earth, smoked jerky and forest floor complements the rich, full and relatively generous medium plus weight flavors that possess perhaps the best phenolic maturity to this point and culminate in a velvety, long and mouth coating finish. This is a lovely effort and recommended. Drink 2014+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! WA 90 (6/2010): Sweetbread-like rich meatiness in counterpoint with tart black fruits characterize the striking Fourrier 2007 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux, which offers a richly-textured, though bright palate, with saliva-inducing saline savor akin to pan drippings all the way through a long finish. As it opened to the air, this Gevrey’s black fruits sweetened-up impressively. I suspect it will be worth following for 6-8 years. VM 89-92 (4/2009): Deep red-ruby. Tight aromas of black fruits and licorice. Very firmly structured and backward, with a malic edge giving the wine a tough quality today and making it very hard to judge. |

BH 88-91 (1/2007): There is no reduction here however as the very fresh, bright and exuberant nose features briar, red and blue fruit and iron-infused earth aromas that complement to perfection the round, rich and sweet flavors that are unusually well-detailed and finish with punch and power. This too is recommended. Drink 2012+. Outstanding! Top value. VM 88-91 (4/2007): Good bright, deep red. Wilder, musky nose hints at roast coffee. Sweet on entry, then sappy and imploded in the middle, showing less fat than the Echezeaux and a more muscular texture. Ultimately much less sweet than the south-side example. Finishes with substantial building tannins. |

VM 91 (3/2012): Good deep red. Musky aroma of raspberry, blueberry, smoke, crushed rock and game. At once sweet and taut, with an impression of lift and energy rare for the vintage. Really lovely fruit here. Fourrier told me he liked the effect of elevage in mostly older casks in 2009. "More new oak would have speeded up the evolution of the wines," he explained. "That would have required using more sulfur dioxide but we still would have lost fruit." BH 89-91 (1/2011): (from Champs Perrières in Brochon.) An earthy and very Gevrey nose offers up dark berry fruit and game-infused aromas that complement well the brooding, robust and complex medium weight plus flavors that possess fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in an intense and driving finish. This is a lovely villages and worth your consideration. Drink 2016+. Outstanding! |
