VM 90-92 (1/2019): The 2017 Beaune Les Boucherottes 1er Cru, matured in around 25% new oak, has a fragrant, pressed-flower-scented bouquet offering ample red berry fruit, hints of Seville orange marmalade and a light vanilla note. The medium-bodied is fresh and vibrant with supple tannin, and the oak is very well integrated toward the fleshy and quite persistent finish. This is one of my favorite wines from Domaine A-F Gros this year and it comes highly recommended. Neal Martin. |

VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Echezeaux Grand Cru comes from vines over 90 years old and is matured entirely in new oak. It has a very pure, seductive bouquet of black cherry and raspberry fruit infused with pressed iris and hints of India ink. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and gentle grip, stiffening a little toward the finish, which just needs a little more flesh to come through. Afford this five years in bottle if possible, because it shows fine balance. Neal Martin. |

BH 91-93 (4/2020): (from a .26 ha parcel of vines planted in 1931 in the climat Champs Traversin, which is occasionally referred to as Le Petit Cîteaux; 20% whole clusters.) Admirably discreet wood frames the fresh and notably spicy liqueur-like red berry fruit, earth and discreet floral aromas. The delicious, intense and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors possess more size and weight if a bit less refinement before concluding in a balanced and strikingly long finale that offers just a bit more depth. Drink 2030+. VM 91-93 (1/2020): The 2018 Echezeaux Grand Cru has a broody bouquet with dark berry fruit laced with black tea and touches of leather. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, almost "chunky" tannins. This is not a graceful Echezeaux but there is plenty of substance with a judicious touch of spice on the finish. Fine, but give it time. Neal Martin. Drink 2023-2036. |

BH 90-92 (4/2020): A pretty, perfumed and quite elegant nose of liqueur-like red and blue berry fruit aromas is trimmed in soft earth and spice nuances. There is fine concentration to the sleek, delicious and intense middle weight flavors that possess an attractively textured mouthfeel and fine length on the mildly austere and dusty finale. This softly stony effort will need to add depth to achieve the upper end of my projected range. Drink 2026+. |

WS 88 (9/1999): Clarity and pure Pinot fruit define the aromas in this Burgundy, while the cherry and spice flavors are matched with decent focus, density and length. Not a blockbuster, but attractive for the vintage. Drink now through 2002. 165 cases made. |

WA 93-95 (12/2013): The 2012 Richebourg Grand Cru comes from the family’s 0.60-hectare parcel whose oldest vines are approaching retirement. It has a very refined, elegant bouquet that is actually more like a Romanee-Saint-Vivant at the moment. There are lovely scents of orange-blossom and quince emerging with time. The palate is well-balanced with a rounded, harmonious entry. It is silky smooth at the moment with a fine thread of acidity. It remains sedate, distant even but very sophisticated and the oak is very well assimilated towards the finish. Excellent. BH 91-94 (4/2014): (The Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could keep the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole of Domaine Michel Gros. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) In much the same fashion as the Pezerolles this is presently very toasty and it's enough where the wood pushes the spicy black pinot fruit to the background if not completely hides it. The supple and very round large-scaled flavors possess excellent concentration and an intense minerality on the powerful and moderately austere finish. My predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt in this case because the wood does not alter the texture or sweeten the finish and thus there is a good chance that this will ultimately harmonize. Drink 2024+. |

WA 92-94 (12/2015): The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru clearly has the best bouquet amongst the A.F. Gros range: wonderful, minerally red berry fruit, dried flowers and just a hint of warm gravel in the background. It gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. The acidity is very well judged and there is a creamy texture lending harmony to this Richebourg. I do think it is the most complex Richebourg I have tasted from the domaine in recent years, but it is one of the most sensual. Give it 8-10 years in bottle so that it can show what it can do. BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( the Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could keep the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole of Domaine Michel Gros. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) Once again there is also enough oak influence to notice though not enough to appreciably detract from the high-toned and overtly spicy red currant, violet and plum-suffused nose. There is a lovely minerality to the supple and forward middle weight plus flavors where the mid-palate is almost soft. This is a somewhat curious showing as I like the refinement and impressive length but the depth is at present only average. My range offers the benefit of the doubt that this will revert to its usual level of quality in time. Drink 2026+. |

BH 92-94 (4/2017): (the Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could retain the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) Prominent, but not dominant, oak and menthol characters are present on the ultra-spicy nose of attractively fresh red and dark cherry aromas that are trimmed in tea, sandalwood and hoisin nuances. The bigger, richer and more mineral-driven flavors also coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the overtly powerful and driving finish that goes on and on. This is not a huge version of the appellation but the focus and sense of harmony are certainly admirable. Patience required. Drink 2030+. |

VM 94-96 (1/2019): The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru comes from 0.6 hectares of vine in the lieu-dit of Le Veroilles and is matured in 90% new oak. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, although it dissipates with aeration in the glass to reveal ample blackberry and raspberry fruit, crushed stone and just a touch of black truffle. The medium-bodied palate displays fine tannin and impressive balance. Not as powerful as the 2015 that wowed back at the Burgfest tasting, but it fans out beautifully toward the finish. This is a Richebourg of great purity and grace. Neal Martin. BH 92 (4/2020): (the vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) A whiff of herbal tea character can be found on the restrained, airy and spicy nose that reflects notes of various red berries, floral and discreet wood nuances. There is excellent richness and vibrancy to the lightly mineral-inflected and well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine length. Not surprisingly at this early stage, this needs to develop more depth but the underlying material appears to be present such that should occur over time. Drink 2029+. |

BH 92-94 (4/2020): (the vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) The cool, elegant, complex and airy aromas of both red and dark currant that are spiked with a variety of floral, spice and wet stone traces. The palate impression of the tautly muscular and much more mineral-inflected broad-shouldered flavors is more refined if less seductive while delivering just a bit more persistence on the balanced finale. This too needs to add depth, but the underlying material appears to be more than up to the job and overall, this seems very promising. Drink 2033+. VM 92-94 (1/2020): The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru has a very pure and refined bouquet that perhaps comes across more like a Romanee-Saint-Vivant in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, finely tuned acidity with quite high-toned red cherry fruit laced with kirsch and iodine. It does not quite match the superlative 2016 or 2017, but it remains a fine Richebourg. Neal Martin. Drink 2024-2045. |

VM 88-90 (1/2019): The 2017 Vosne-Romanee Les Chalandins comes from vines more than 60 years of age and sees 40% new oak. It has a ripe, candied bouquet of red berry fruit infused with touches of orange peel and apricot. This feels quite exotic. The palate is sorbet-fresh on the entry, with slightly grainy tannin, the oak perhaps impinging a little too much toward the finish. Not bad overall. NEal Martin. |
