BH 94 (1/2016): A restrained nose proposes a well-layered mix of plum, essence of cherry and pungent earth scents along with a hint of the sauvage. The textured, concentrated and powerful large-scaled flavors possess remarkable density on the mid-palate thanks to the abundant dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine and slightly softens the austere and serious but not hard finale. As good as the 1ers in the range are, there is simply another dimension of depth present here. In sum this is terrific but patience will definitely be required. Drink 2028+. |

BH 92-95 (1/2017): (50+ year old vines located in the lower section of the Clos.) Moderate wood sets off the ripe and fresh if restrained aromas of soft earth and spicy dark currant, humus and forest floor scented-nose. There is exceptionally good volume and richness to the palate coating and velvet-textured big-bodied flavors that display outstanding power, punch and intensity on the rustic and ever-so-slightly warm finish. This is built-to-age and is going to need it. Drink 2030+. |

BH 95 (11/2013): This concentrated beauty remains very primary with an herbal top note adding lift to the notably ripe and ultra-spicy black fruit and earth suffused aromas. There is seriously good density to the impressively scaled and imposing big-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the palate coating, powerful and powerful finish that goes on and on. This is a very structured wine that is clearly built for the very long haul and I wouldn't recommend touching a bottle for at least another decade. In sum, this offers stunning potential but in a package that is still years away from being ready. Try from 2025+ VM 94 (4/2008): Deep ruby-red. Knockout brooding nose offers dark fruits, smoke, leather and musky Cuban tobacco. Wonderfully silky and thick on entry, then impressively dense without any heaviness in the middle palate. Hugely concentrated wine with superb sucrosite This spreads out to saturate the entire palate with black raspberry fruit and subtle earth tones. Can't quite match the Suchots for delicacy but this boasts Outstanding breadth and class. A great example of Echezeaux. WS 94 (5/2008): Purity and elegance are the hallmarks of this silky red. Black currant, violet, plum and mineral notes convene on the palate, as the supple texture gives way to beefy tannins. Be patient, this is just a baby. Best from 2015 through 2036. 80 cases imported. WA 93-94 (4/2007): Grivot’s 2005 Echezeaux leads with black raspberry and tart, high-toned red raspberry, fresh ginger, orange zest, black truffle, and wisps of wood smoke. Bright, high-toned, berry essences and pungent spice and smokiness dominate in the mouth as well, with a superb concentration and purity of sweet, creamy fruit coating the palate. Low-toned minerals and meat stock emerge in the wine’s long finish, but its energetic, invigorating brightness and primary sweetness of fruit remain undiminished. |

BH 95 (1/2012): (from the climat of Les Cruots, also known as Vignes Blanches). An exuberantly spicy nose of wonderfully seductive black fruit liqueur aromas leads to rich, suave, pure and dense flavors that are a highly beguiling blend of finesse and power, all wrapped in a robust yet finely detailed finish of stunning length. This is one of the very best examples of the appellation in 2009. Drink 2024+. WA 95 (4/2012): The 2009 Echezeaux is pure silk. Black cherries, spices, licorice and tar are all woven together in a fabric of nearly indescribable elegance. All the elements fall into place as the Echezeaux captivates both the intellectual and hedonistic senses. This is a wine that impresses for its understated elegance. Readers won’t fine the drive of the Clos de Vougeot or the structure of the Richebourg. Instead, the Echezeaux possesses stunning textural finesse and phenomenal balance. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. VM 93+ (4/2012): Good deep, bright red. Very reduced nose is currently blocking the wine's primary fruits. Fatter but initially less sweet than the Clos de Vouget, with a bit of leathery funk to its dark berry, earth and iodine flavors. Began quite unforthcoming if rather suave, but gained significantly in sweetness and thickness with aeration. This will need at least seven or eight years of bottle aging or a lot of time in a decanter. Grivot believes that the very dense cork he used to seal this wine is largely responsible for its reductive character. WS 93 (6/2012): A smoky, almost grilled meat aroma leads off, followed by black cherry and plum flavors. This quickly closes down, displaying dense tannins and a dry finish. Stays fresh, with a black currant aftertaste. Best from 2017 through 2035. 90 cases imported. |

BH 95 (1/2019): (from Les Cruots which is also known as Vignes Blanches.) A deft touch of wood frames a strongly reduced nose. More positively, the velvety, round and utterly seductive large-scaled flavors are brimming with dry extract on the mouth coating and quite serious finish that displays sensational length and stunning complexity. This is a powerful Ech that is also clearly built to age. Note that my rating implicitly assumes that the reduction displayed by the nose will eventually dissipate as it does not show up on the palate. Drink 2036+. WS 94 (12/2018): Pure, succulent cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors are well-matched to the firm, dense matrix of acidity and tannins. Harmonious and long, with a terrific aftertaste. Best from 2022 through 2043. 104 cases made. |

BH 88-90 (1/2001): Classic Boudots profile of Vosne spice and Nuits structure. I was knocked out by the explosive black fruit followed by black fruit extract and sap. This is dense, powerful and long. A clear success. Outstanding! |

VM 92+ (4/2008): Deep red-ruby. Highly complex, demonstrative nose combines red fruits, musky truffle, minerals and crushed stone. Broad, rich, ripe and mouthfilling; like a bowl of fruits. As ripe as this is, it retains verve and lift. Finishes with dusty, well-distributed tannins and exotic notes of coffee and cocoa powder, plus a youthfully bitter note that contributes to the impression of energy and freshness. Very promising wine; I can't recall the last Boudots here that was as strong as this. Stephen Tanzer. BH 92 (1/2008): As its geographic position would suggest, this is half Nuits and half Vosne in character with an intensely spicy black fruit nose nuanced with ample floral, game and earth notes that introduce rich, full and sleekly muscled flavors that also possess suave tannins and terrific length on the dusty and mouth coating finish. This is a 'wow' wine with real punch but also sophistication. Drink 2017+. |

BH 93 (1/2010): (from 70+ year old vines). In 2009, the nose is more Vosne than Nuits with ample amounts of spice to the very ripe liqueur of cassis and red cherries that gives way to highly complex, intense and concentrated medium weight plus flavors that culminate in a rich, suave and superbly long finish. This is right at the limit of what I personally prefer in terms of ripeness but many will find this to be highly seductive. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Aux Boudots presents a Vosne-like expression of dark cherries, graphite, menthol and sweet spices. This is another especially vibrant, focused 2009 that will benefit from another few years in bottle. Truth is, it is pretty terrific right now. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. VM 92 (4/2012): Good full medium red. Very ripe, distinctly dark aromas of black cherry, blackberry and violet. Sweet, seamless and concentrated, with more of a fruit compote character than the Roncieres is displaying. No shortage of energy here but a bit easy today for premier cru. The fine dusting of tannins and obvious sweetness will give this significant immediate appeal. Grivot believes he picked this wine two days too late, adding that "the secret of 2009 was not to harvest too late." The Roncieres, he added, is more complex even if it needs time. |

BH 92 (1/2016): ( from 70+ year old vines.) Gentle but not invisible wood serves as a backdrop for spicy and distinctly earthy red and dark currant aromas that possess an unusual yet interesting top note of dried tangerine peel. As is the case with many of the Grivot 2013s the mouth feel of the middle weight plus flavors is relatively fine thanks to the refined if firm tannins that shape and support the suave, powerful and mouth coating finale. This moderately firm and ever-so-mildly rustic effort will also need all of 12 years or so to reveal its full potential. Worth considering. Drink 2025+. WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots has a similar nose to the '13 Roncier with slightly less mineralite at the moment. The palate is crisp and fresh, a little spicier here than either the Roncier or Pruliers, with a dash of black pepper enlivening the finish. There is plenty of charm here, although contrasting the two barrel samples, I suspect that the Roncier will possess more complexity in the long run. WS 91 (5/2016): This is aromatic, exuding floral, wild berry, spice and herbal notes. Flirts with elegance, boasting grip and racy acidity, ending with a chewy texture. Best from 2018 through 2030. 50 cases imported. VM 90+ (3/2016): Deep red with ruby highlights. Pungent perfume of black cherry, raspberry, minerals and licorice. Juicy but tightly wound, hinting at a racy high note of blood orange. All of these wines are showing firm tannic spine today but hiding their fat. |

WS 94 (1/2019): A lush, velvety red, this sports black cherry, blackberry, plum, earth and subtle dark chocolate flavors. Firm, yet harmonious and succulent, ending with a long, refined finish. Best from 2022 through 2040. 189 cases made. BH 91-94 (1/2018): (from 70+ year old vines.) Here the wood treatment isn't subtle though neither is it sufficient to overshadow the wonderfully fresh and layered nose of blue pinot fruit, cassis, earth and broad range of spice elements. The mouthfeel of the broad-shouldered flavors is equally seductive and even sleeker but despite the generous mid-palate there is solid muscle and a firm core of tannins supporting the powerful and driving finish. As big as this is, it still manages to remain refined and well-balanced. Lovely stuff but once again, extended patience will be required if you wish to experience this at its peak. Drink 2031+. Outstanding! VM 91-93 (1/2018): Full red-ruby. Pure, subtly perfumed aromas of blackberry, spices and licorice. Dense but youthfully linear, showing lovely finesse of texture to its tight-grained flavors of dark fruits, spices and saline minerality lifted by violet. With its compact kernel of fruit, this is neither sweet nor easygoing today, but its precision and definition call to mind a 2014, or even a 2010. Finishes classically dry and firmly tannic, with very persistent flavors of black fruits, spices and bitter chocolate. This very promising wine will need time in bottle to harmonize and expand. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 96 (12/2009): Grivot's 2006 Richebourg unsurprisingly displays a richness, meaty substantiality, and carnal depth that go beyond the other wines in his current collection. Peat, myriad tobaccos, black tea, roasted game, faded lilies, toasted praline, and dark fungal and forest floor elements kaleidoscopically scent the nose, and carry onto a sumptuously-, silkenly-textured, wet stone-lined, yet juicy, buoyant, and dynamic palate. While this wine is not about fruits and berries, it offers black cherries and purple plums to spare. The finish here perpetuates the seemingly paradoxical alliance of grip with levity; caress with vibrancy; and concentration with elegance that characterize many of the finest wines of the vintage. Grivot tasted it with me for the first time after bottling and remarked that he was amazed at what it had gained - not to mention how little if anything it had lost - in the process. You could safely plan on following this masterpiece for 15-20 years. WS 95 (6/2009): Excellent purity and depth highlight the aromas and flavors in this reserved, aristocratic red. Concentrated flavors of cherry, currant, mineral and spice play out on the dense texture, and the fine, ripe tannins and long finish reveal its potential for aging. Best from 2012 through 2027. 10 cases imported. VM 94+ (4/2009): Good full deep red. Very pure aromas of cassis, dark raspberry, minerals and nutty oak. Like liquid silk on entry, then vibrant yet seamless in the middle, with terrific density and energy to its dark raspberry and mineral flavors. Finishes impressively long, with mounting, tongue-dusting tannins. This seemed to close down in the glass, then roared back with a bit of aeration to show explosive black fruits. Should be long-lived for the vintage. BH 94 (1/2009): This is fresh, expressive, pure and stunningly spicy with its black pinot fruit and a host of subtle Asian sauce nuances, including hoisin and soy that can also be found on the deep, serious, tautly muscled and mineral-suffused broad shouldered flavors brimming with dry extract that really coats the palate on the vibrant and hugely long and explosive finish. Most impressive and while it can't match the '05 for sheer size, weight and grandeur, this is actually ever so slightly more elegant and there is so much material present that it could surprise to the upside. Terrific. Drink 2018+. |

BH 92 (1/2010): (from Richebourg proper.) This also is notably restrained and is even more reserved than that of the Clos de Vougeot but classier with a wonderfully intense and layered nose that offers up a variety of spice and herbal notes, including anise, clove, cinnamon and soy that can also be found on the pure and sleekly muscled flavors that possess real drive, indeed this does a slow but sure build from the mid-palate on through the explosive and tangy finish. This is a wine of harmony, balance, power and Outstanding length though it is sufficiently tight to undoubtedly require 12 to 15 years of time in bottle first. Very promising but note that here too the gas is enough to require decanting. Drink 2019+. |

BH 97 (1/2012): (from Richebourg proper). This is also on the restrained side with a discreet nose that features a spicy, cool, ripe and elegant nose of primarily blue and black pinot fruit and wet stone nuances that continue onto the focused, powerful and substantial broad-shouldered flavors that possess superb mid-palate concentration and flat out amazing length. Grivot told me that the 2009 version of his Richebourg is the best that he has ever made and from my perspective, I agree as even the amazing 2005 did not show as well at the same point in its evolution. In a word, brilliant. Drink 2029+. VM 965+ (4/2012): Bright full red. Pungent, utterly primary nose offers ripe blackberry, black cherry, violet, crushed stone, chocolate and coffee. Vibrant, sappy and palate-staining, with soil-driven flavors of dark berries, licorice, minerals and crushed stone complicated by a saline nuance. Here the vineyard manages to dominate the vintage, which is a neat trick in 2009. Finishes with noble, serious tannins and Outstanding building persistence. Give this plenty of air if you plan to try it any time soon. Better yet, cellar it and forget it for a decade or more. WS 96 (6/2012): Black cherry and blackberry flavors are at the core of this monolithic red. Though not very expressive now, floral, spice and mineral notes add depth as this shows beautiful texture and freshness, building slowly to the long aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2038. 020 cases imported. WA 94+ (4/2012): The 2009 Richebourg comes across as quite elegant and restrained for this site. This isn’t a huge Richebourg, rather it is a wine that convinces for its overall balance and sense of harmony. Today it is the wine’s length and minerality that stand out. It will be interesting to see where the Richebourg goes over the coming years. Everything here is implied rather than stated. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. |

VM 95+ (4/2016): Bright dark red. Precise, high-pitched aromas of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and mint. Utterly spherical, fine-grained wine with outstanding intensity; conveys a powerful impression of force but without any hardness or brutality. The pungent red berry flavors are complicated by suggestions of leather and game and given further punch by strong underlying minerality. Finishes with big, broad, building tannins that will require patience. Boasts outstanding inner-mouth tension and energy, but the sensuality of Vosne-Romanée is also on display here. A great showing. Stephen Tanzer. BH 95 (1/2016): This undoubtedly possesses the most floral nose of these 2013 grands crus with its notes of lilac, violet and rose petal along with a broad range of spice elements adding nuance to the dark berry fruit liqueur aromas. There is superb volume and intensity to the pungent mineral-driven and imposingly-scaled flavors that exude focused power on the extract-rich, explosively long and beautifully well-detailed finale. As good as the Echézeaux is, and it is indeed superb, the Riche is flat out great. As I have consistently underscored with the Grivot '13s though do not buy this wine in the hopes of instant, or even early, gratification as the Riche is going to require a very long snooze in a cool cellar. |

BH 93-96 (1/2017): (from Richebourg proper.) This too is sufficiently reduced as to render it difficult to assess. By contrast, the big-bodied, powerful and incredibly rich flavors are tighter and less forthcoming with strikingly good underlying material while displaying stunningly fine depth on the mineral-inflected and wonderfully persistent finish. This too is blessed with seemingly unending reserves of dry extract that do an excellent job of buffering the very firm tannic spine. Patience, and lots of it, is absolutely essential here. Drink 2033+. Don't miss! |

BH 97 (1/2019): (from Richebourg proper.) Here too there is a touch of wood hovering in the background of the reticent but wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven large-scaled flavors possess innate power that drench the palate in dry extract while delivering gorgeous depth and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is magnificent though like the Clos de Vougeot and the Echezeaux, it would be virtually pointless to open a bottle young and besides, there is so much potential that it would be a shame to waste it. Drink 2038+. NM 96-98 (12/2017): The 2016 Richebourg Grand Cru was not touched at all by the frost, so there are the full five barrels this year (sometimes it can be six). It has a majestic bouquet with ample blackberry, raspberry preserve and brown spice scents, later a touch of white flowers and truffle. This is so mercurial in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin. This is beautifully focused, tensile and brimming with energy, yet it remains linear, almost aloof right to the finish, a covert sign that it should not be broached for at least a decade like most great Richebourgs. An aristocrat. VM 95-98 (1/2018): Bright red with ruby tones. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate are lifted by a violet topnote. Utterly suave on entry, conveying outstanding precision and energy to its flavors of black and blue fruits and crushed rock, with a piquant hint of bitter orange marmalade contributing to the overall impression of nobility. Suave, toothdusting tannins are totally supported by fruit and the seamless, palate-saturating finish perfumes the mouth with minerals, violet and Valrhona bitter chocolate, going on for a minute or more. As charismatic as this young Richebourg is today, it's far from the most demonstrative wine in the cellar. It will need at least a decade of bottle aging and should last for at 25 to 30 years in a cool cellar. Stephen Tanzer. |

WS 90 (5/2016): Elegant and perfumed, showing black cherry, strawberry and spice flavors that linger on the finish. Best from 2017 through 2024. 150 cases imported. BH 88 (1/2016): (40% of the blend is from Aux Ravioles on the Nuits border.) Here the expressive nose blends both upper and lower register aromas of herbal tea, spice and floral nuances with notes of pomegranate and plum. There is a lovely mouth feel to the lightly mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that possess fine volume and intensity before culminating in a dusty, serious and mildly austere finish. This will likely need most of a decade of cellar time to reveal its full potential. Drink 2021+. VM 88 (3/2016): Bright medium red. Spicy red berries complicated by hints of mint and meat on the nose. Juicy, sappy and vibrant; a savory, soil-driven wine with its fruit currently in the background. Shows slightly green-edged acidity and tannins but boasts excellent energy. WA 87-89 (12/2014): A barrel blend of 12 barrels with around 25% new, the 2013 Vosne-Romanee Village has a clean and pure raspberry and crushed-strawberry nose. The palate is soft in the mouth with fine acidity, gaining a little more structure and masculinity toward the finish. This should give five or six years of pleasure, possibly longer. |

VM 90 (4/2017): Moderately saturated medium red Livelier on the nose than the Charmois, with scents of black cherry, graphite and dark chocolate lifted by a floral quality At once sweet and savory on the palate, with lovely acidity framing the red berry and cherry fruit flavors and extending the finish Suaver and more pliant than the Charmois but the wine's more serious tannins and an element of peppery lift on the back end call for at least a couple years of patience. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90 (1/2017): Here the expressive and overtly spicy nose is fresh and lovely with its floral, herbal tea, plum and cassis-suffused aromas. There is fine richness to the succulent and fleshy medium weight flavors that possess a relatively refined mouth feel thanks to the fine grain of the supporting tannins on the sappy and well-balanced finale. This is a terrific Vosne villages and highly recommended. |

VM 92-95 (1/2018): (Grivot is aging this wine in 50% new oak but seasoned the barrels first with a Chardonnay vinification; all of the fruit from the lower section of this site was lost to frost but the terraces were unaffected): Bright red-ruby. Pure but reticent scents of dark raspberry, bitter chocolate and spices are accented by a touch of gunflint minerality. Sappy and fine-grained, offering terrific intensity and depth to its precise flavors of dark berries and spices. Grivot has long thought that his Aux Brûlees vines on a south-facing terrace are too sun-drenched in warmer years, but he noted that this is the first vintage he has really liked for its energy and sophistication, describing the wine as "less Brigitte Bardot than normal." He credits this to more intracellular fermentation with a higher percentage of whole berries. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-94 (1/2018): A cool, super-fresh and restrained nose offers up airy aromas of essence of black pinot fruit, violet, anise and a discreet hint of wood spice. The dense, powerful and muscular big-bodied flavors possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, which is important because the tannic spine is unmistakably present on the robust and mineral-driven finish. While it would not be entirely fair to describe this as rustic, it flirts with it, yet a fine Brûlees almost always becomes seductive in time. Recommended if you have the patience to cellar it for the longer-term. Drink 2031+. Outstanding! |

WS 92 (2/2002): Impressive blockbuster red Burgundy. Black-colored, firmly structured, showing an integrity of clean, pure and focused black and red berry character. A bit woody, the oak stands out a bit at this stage. Needs time to soften, but has a long finish. Best from 2003 through 2008. 540 cases made. VM 91+ (4/2002): Bright ruby-red. Primary aromas of dark berries, minerals, bitter chocolate, mint and flowers. Dense, sweet and concentrated; atypically powerful for this cuvee but not at all overly extracted or hard. This has lovely sweetness and texture. Finishes with substantial, building tannins and impressive persistence. "Almost too spectacular in its youth for my style," notes Grivot. BH 90 (11/2004): This is a very powerful wine if not necessarily an elegant one with plenty of Vosne spice and rugged, structured, dense and punchy flavors that display solid length. The tannins are ripe and this will clearly take its time coming together but it's a powerful and serious blessed with excellent underlying material. Try from 2011+. WA 90-92 (8/2001): The ruby-colored 1999 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts has dramatic red fruit aromas. An intense wine, it has a plush, juicy, highly detailed, sweet, black cherry-filled flavor profile. Its character is tangy, lively, and reveals an extremely long, focused, and soft finish. |

WA 88 (5/2011): The 2008 Vosne-Romanee reveals good inner tension in its sweet crushed flowers, tobacco and incense. This, too, could use a little more complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. BH 88 (1/2011): 940% of the blend is from Aux Ravioles on the Nuits border.)
