| VM 94 (8/2009): The 2006 Il Carbonaione is a big, dark wine. Imposing at first, it flows from the glass with tons of super-ripe blueberries, grilled herbs, new leather, spices, minerals and flowers. Today the oak is rather prominent, but all the wine needs is time in bottle to come together. The finish is long, pure and refined. Simply put, the 2006 Il Carboniaone is a gem that readers won't want to miss. Antonio Galloni. |

| WA 94+ (6/2012): The 2009 Il Carbonaione has elegance to burn. Polished, silky tannins frame layers of fruit as this harmonious, totally finessed wine blossoms in the glass. The 2009 is simply glorious from the very first taste. A kick of Sangiovese acidity gives the wine its lift and vibrancy on the finish. This is a great showing. Carbonaione is 100% Sangiovese (Lamole clone) grown on the hillsides of Greve. The wine spent 15 months in 350-liter oak barrels, 50% new. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2029. |

JS 94 (9/2014): Wonderful aromas of dried orange peel, blueberry and dark chocolate. Full body with firm tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Always a wonderful sangiovese. Needs at least three years to soften but so beautiful now. VM 94 (9/2014): The 2011 Carbonaione is another gorgeous wine in a line of successful vintages that goes all the way back to 1992. Blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, licorice, new leather and sweet spices flesh out in a voluptuous, racy wine that beautifully expresses the personality of the vintage. Today, the 2011 is rich, layered and voluptuous to the core. It is also incredibly primary. Readers who want to experience the 2011 in its full glory will have to wait at least a few years, but there is little question the 2011 is a worthy follow up to the epic 2010. VM 91 (10/2014): (100% sangiovese): Inky ruby. A perfumed violet nuance complicates dark plum and blueberry syrup on the enticing nose, with red fruit notes emerging with aeration. Dense, rich and suave, with harmonious acidity providing clarity and cut to the very deep red berry and cocoa flavors. Finishes pure and very long, with silky tannins. This develops more of a red berry profile with aeration. An Outstanding wine, but I would have scored it even higher had it reminded me more of sangiovese. |

| VM 95 (9/2015): The 2012 Il Carbonaione comes across as quite shy and reserved today, with less of its typical exuberance. That just makes me think the wine is going to need a few years to blossom. Sweet red cherry, plum, kirsch, spice and rose petal nuances gradually emerge from the glass, but the 2012 remains reticent and not fully expressive. I would not be surprised to see the market look past the 2012, as it is not at all showy, but that will just create an opportunity for savvy consumers. There is plenty to look forward to. Readers will have to be patient, though. Over the years, Il Carbonaione has built a tremendous track record of aging very well. Next to Chianti Classico's other 100% Sangioveses, Carbonaione is made in a sweeter, jammier style with more mid-palate opulence. Although showy in its youth, Carbonaione needs time in bottle to show at its best. Antonio Galloni. |

| VM 95+ (10/2016): The 2013 Il Carbonaione is compelling. That's the good news. The bad news, if you can call it that, is that the 2013 is going to take the better part of the next decade to be at its best. Black cherry, plum, licorice and menthol are all fused together. Today, the 2013 is rich, deep and unctuous, with superb depth and striking balance. Opening a bottle anytime soon, though, is likely to be a mostly academic exercise, as the Carbonaione is so primary, it almost tastes like a barrel sample! Antonio Galloni. |

JS 97 (6/2018): Sit back and enjoy this very rich but beautifully polished Tuscan red, which is the essence of the sangiovese grape. Great concentration and a very long and silky finish that has a great bittersweet-chocolate character. Beautiful now, but it has many, many years ahead of it. VM 95+ (2/2019): The 2015 Il Carbonaione is fabulous. It is also quite a bit more refined than I expected in this warm year. Nuanced, silky and light on its feet for such an intense wine, the 2015 a has a lot to offer. As has been the case in the past, I expect the 2015 won't start to drink well until age ten or so. I am not sure I remember seeing a young Carbonaione with this much delineation and finesse. I can't wait to see how it ages. Carbonaione remains one of the most under the radar wines in Italy. Antonio Galloni. WA 92 (10/2018): The 2015 Il Carbonaione presents a thick and darkly saturated side of Sangiovese. This expression opens to a dark garnet color with ripe aromas of black cherry, prune and blackberry. This edition delivers extra thickness and richness, yet that mid-weight approach is never compromised. This wine should spread out and gain in volume as it evolves in the bottle. Some 26,000 bottles were made (whereas only 2,000 bottles of the 2015 Capogatto were produced). |

| VM 96 (7/2024): The 2021 Piantonaia, the estate's pure Merlot, is superb. In fact, the 2021 might be the best edition I have tasted. A rush of dark red/purplish fruit, blood orange, pomegranate and spice saturates the palate, lifted by bright acids that lend energy. I admire the wine's depth, textural intensity and overall balance. The only real question is why all vintages aren't more like this. |
