BH 87-89 (4/2021): Ripe yet fresh aromas are comprised by notes of plum, black cherry, earth and a whisper of violet. The impressively concentrated and mouthcoating flavors possess a suave mid-palate that masks just how powerful the robust, rustic and youthfully austere finish really is. This is a big Bourgogne that will age accordingly. |

BH 92 (4/2013): This possesses really lovely aromatic complexity with a hint of the sauvage to the plum, dark berry fruit and pungent earth scents. There is good volume and richness to the opulent and suave medium-bodied flavors that display relatively fine detail on the firm and ever-so-mildly rustic finish. This is one of the rare 2010s that could actually be approached young if it was decanted for an hour or so first. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

BH 89-92 (4/2018): An expressive nose speaks of essence of raspberry, earth, sauvage and a hint of wood. The dense super-ripe flavors brim with dry extract that coats the palate and imparts a velvety mouth feel to the mocha, bitter cherry pit and slightly warm finale. This muscular and mildly rustic effort is a very ripe 2016 yet the overall impression is one of freshness and energy. VM 89-92 (1/2018): Good dark red. Very ripe scents of dark raspberry and chocolate. Quite powerful but youthfully bound-up, with the impression of chocolatey richness carrying through the palate. Finishes with big but fine-grained tannins and a serious structure. Perhaps a bit overconcentrated but not out of whack. This wine will clearly need time in bottle to absorb some of its baby fat. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 92-94 (2/2012): Good deep red-ruby. Black cherry, licorice and violet on the nose; smells deep. Very ripe and sweet, with firm spine to the flavors of black fruits and violet. The substantial sweet, fine tannins really melt into the finish. Conveys an almost chocolatey ripeness while maintaining excellent verve. BH 91-94 (4/2012): (from an enormous 4.8 ha parcel with vines ranging from 50 to 65 years of age). A beautifully layered nose of purple fruit, violets and soil tones leads to exceptionally rich, velvety and sappy medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm but not hard tannic spine on the dusty and mocha-infused finish. This is a big but reasonably refined and well-balanced Epenots that is built for the long haul. Drink 2025+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 93 (4/2018): (from an enormous 4.92 ha parcel with vines ranging from 50 to 65 years of age.) Super ripe liqueur-like yet still reasonably fresh aromas of plum, cassis, earth and a broad array of spice elements precede the massively concentrated flavors that are almost imposingly powerful. The finish drenches the palate with dry extract and this is quite simply lavishly opulent. What is perhaps more remarkable still is how a wine that is so firmly structured can at the same time be approachable. This is riper than I prefer but there is no denying that it's certainly impressive. Drink 2035+. Outstanding! |

BH 92 (4/2019): A fresher if still very ripe nose displays notes of cassis, black cherry, spice and a touch of wood influence. The refined yet overtly powerful flavors possess so much dry extract that they come across as velvety and forward just until the almost painfully intense finish where the character changes to a youthfully austere, dusty and very serious finale. This too is a big 2016 with plenty of muscle and excellent aging potential. VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright ruby-red. Deep, ripe aromas of black cherry and chocolatey oak, plus a high-toned whiff of sherry. Then large-scaled and aromatic in the mouth, conveying stronger terroir personality than the foregoing wines. Complex and fine-grained, with a positive trace of bracing bitterness. Chewy, chocolatey, well-integrated tannins take over the entire mouth on the back end. This nuanced, fine-grained wine finishes with a trace of dried herbs and has the structure to age. The yield here was just eight hectoliters per hectare, according to estate manager Yves Confuron. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92+ (4/2019): The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Grand Clos des Épenots offers up aromas of blackcurrant cordial, blood orange, dark chocolate and spices, followed by a full-bodied, broad-shouldered palate built around an ample chassis of richly extracted powdery stem tannin, concentrated fruit and tangy acids, concluding with a long, mordant finish. The wine's aromas, flavors and structure are all quite stylized, marked by Yves Confuron's preference for extended cold macerations, stem retention and long fermentations, but in that style, it is an undeniable success—albeit one that only the most patient of readers will ever encounter at maturity. |

WA 94 (12/1992): Believe it or not, the 1990 Pommard-Les Rugiens is even richer than the 1990 Pommard-Les Epenots! It is a 25-40 year wine - a rarity in Burgundy. Also massively endowed, with port-like Pinot Noir fruit, this is a wine of extraordinary concentration, majestic stature, and prodigious potential for longevity. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2035+. |

WS 93 (6/2014): Tightly wound and linear, with sandalwood, sweet spice and cedar notes accenting the cherry and strawberry flavors. Complex and dense, but will need time to unwind. Excellent length. Best from 2016 through 2028. 75 cases imported. VM 92+ (3/2014): Good bright red. Complex, ripe aromas of raspberry, cherry, iron, minerals, spices, pepper and truffley underbrush. The sweetest, supplest and most refined of these 2011s, offering lovely harmonious acidity to its red fruit, red licorice and mineral flavors. Really coats the mouth and vibrates on the long, firmly tannic finish, which features a late burst of ripe but lively red fruits. Winemaker Yves Confuron says the 2011s here have similar precision to the 2010s but more middle, although he believes that the wines have shut down following the September 2013 bottling. BH 92 (4/2014): (from a 1.07 ha parcel in Rugiens-Hauts) There is really lovely complexity to the cool, restrained and elegant aromas of ripe red and blue pinot fruit and wet stone nuances that enjoy added refinement from the presence of dried floral elements though the stems are presently visible. There is a suave, round and sophisticated mouth feel to the intensely mineral-driven flavors that are shaped by firm and dense yet fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a mocha-inflected finish. This is an unusually ripe 2011 and interestingly it doesn't have the same level of complexity as the Epenots, or in any event not yet. Note well that plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2023+. Outstanding! WA 89 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens ‘11 has quite an intense, slightly tinny bouquet with tart red cherries, orange zest and damp earthy aromas. The definition is quite impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with bold and assertive tannins and there is real weight in the mouth. It is endowed with plenty of oak, although there is as much fruit tannin as wood on the austere finish. Difficult to see which way this will head, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt and suggest giving time for it to coalesce. |

BH 91 (4/2019): This is aromatically quite similar to the Fremiers if ever-so-slightly fresher and also flashes a background note of oak influence. The dense, powerful and super-rich mineral-driven big-bodied flavors possess first-rate levels of dry extract while delivering fine length on the mocha-inflected, bitter cherry pit and noticeably warm finish. This is certainly impressive in its fashion but it's somewhat particular in the context of the vintage. VM 93-95 (1/2018): Bright medium ruby. Vibrant nose combines blackberry, boysenberry, kirsch, violet, minerals and chocolate. Dense, fine-grained and light on its feet, offering uncanny intensity and penetration to its juicy dark berry and mineral flavors. This graceful, vibrant Rugiens finishes with substantial broad, dusty tannins, harmonious acidity and slow-building length. A real live wire, particularly for a wine made from grapes picked in October. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92 (4/2019): A rich bouquet of smoky blackberries, cassis, cloves and cinnamon introduce the 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens, a dense, saturated wine that's full-bodied, broad and powerful, with an ample chassis of rich, chewy tannins, excellent concentration, ripe acids and a long, lusty finish. Of all of Confuron's wines at Domaine de Courcel this year, the Rugiens is the most generously endowed with fruit and flesh, though its assertive structure is still very prominent. |

BH 90 (4/2022): An exuberantly spicy and not quite as ripe nose blends slightly fresher notes of raspberry, black cherry and exotic tea. The wonderfully vibrant middle weight plus flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality on the palate drenching, very firm and moderately austere finish where a similar level of warmth slowly emerges. This bitter chocolate-inflected effort should age well but it's necessary to be tolerant of noticeable warmth. |
