2015 |
California Carignane |
$35 |
1 |
|
| |
| VM 92 (8/2017): A powerful, intense wine, the 2015 Carignan (California) offers notable depth as well as persistence. Black cherry, lavender, spice and plum fill out the wine's frame effortlessly. This is a darker and more virile style, with more obvious tannin than that found in the Contra Costa bottling. The 2015 needs a good 6-12 months in bottle, but it is quite expressive, even at this early stage. Antonio Galloni. |

2015 |
Contra Costa County Mataro |
$45 |
1 |
|
| |
| VM 91 (8/2017): The 2015 Mataro (Contra Costa) is surprisingly gracious in the glass. Pure sand soils yield a wine built on aromatic lift, with expressive dried rose petal, lavender and red cherry fruit notes that are nicely pushed forward. Antonio Galloni. |

2017 |
Contra Costa County Red Table Wine |
$35 |
2 |
|
| |
| VM 92 (5/2019): The 2017 Red Table Wine is a blend of Carignane and Mataro, two varieties that are especially complementary here. Super-ripe red cherry, rose petal, mint, cedar and sweet tobacco are some of the aromas and flavors that emerge. Silky, nuanced and light on its feet, the 2017 is very pretty. As is the case with all of these wines, the integration of the whole clusters is impeccable. The blend is 65% Carignane and 35% Mataro. Antonio Galloni. |

2017 |
Refosco |
$50 |
1 |
|
| |
| VM 90 (5/2019): The 2017 Refosco, another oddity in this range, is sourced from Casa Nuestra, a site in St. Helena that sells the rest of their fruit to Turley. There is good varietal character in the inky blue and black fruit, along with hints of lavender, rose petal, sage and mint. Supple and silky, with lovely aromatic delineation, the Refosco will drink well upon release. Readers should note that the Sandlands wine is made from a generic version of the Refosco grape and not the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso that can produce wines of notable structure and distinction. (Drink between 2019-2025). Antonio Galloni. |

2016 |
Trousseau |
$59 |
1 |
|
| |
| VM 91 (4/2018): The 2016 Trousseau is gorgeous. Lifted, perfumed and savory, the 2016 is exquisitely beautiful today. Rose petal, mint, white pepper, cranberry and blood orange give the 2016 entrancing nuance and character. The 100% whole clusters are not especially evident. What comes through is a wine of impeccable balance and total class. I loved it. (Drink between 2018-2024). Antonio Galloni. |

2017 |
Trousseau |
$59 |
1 |
|
| |
| VM 91 (5/2019): The 2017 Trousseau, from the Bohan Ranch on the Sonoma Coast. Is absolutely gorgeous. Dried flowers, strawberry, mint, pine and sweet tobacco are all beautifully lifted in this gracious, fragrant wine. Understated and classy to the core, the Trousseau is incredibly inviting. I would prefer to drink the 2017 over the next few years, although it has enough energy to likely drink well beyond that. (Drink between 2019-2025). Antonio Galloni. |

2019 |
Trousseau Lightly Bin-Soiled Label |
$59 |
1 |
|
| |
| VM 92 (1/2021): The Sandlands Trousseau is exquisite in 2019. A whole range of spicecake, rose petal, mint, dried flowers soars out of the glass. Weightless and nuanced, with uncommon flavor complexity, the Trousseau delivers the goods. I would love to see how it ages, but I doubt too many bottles will be around to actually find out. (Drink between 2021-2029). Antonio Galloni. |

2014 |
Amador County Chenin Blanc |
$35 |
1 |
|
| |
| VM 88 (8/2016): The boldest of these Chenins, the 2014 Chenin Blanc (Amador County) is laced with apricot, chamomile and honey, all of which give the wine its rich, unctuous personality. This is an especially overt, luscious Chenin built on texture and depth. (Drink between 2016-2018). Antonio Galloni. |

|
2014 |
California Chenin Blanc |
$25 |
1 |
|
| |
| VM 88 (8/2016): The 2014 Chenin Blanc (California) is the most delicate and understated of these wines. Sweet floral and orchard fruit notes give the 2014 its bright, lifted personality. (Drink between 2016-2018). Antonio Galloni. |
|
|
2014 |
Napa Valley Chenin Blanc |
$30 |
1 |
|
| |
| VM 89 (8/2016): The 2014 Chenin Blanc (Napa Valley) is arguably the most varietally true and nuanced of the three Sandlands Chenins. It also has the most creamy, nuanced texture of the wines. Pear, hazelnut, herbs and chamomile are nicely focused throughout. The 2014 offers an appealing combination of energy and richness. (Drink between 2016-2019). Antonio Galloni. |
