WA 91-93 (12/2003): For the second year in a row, Larry Turley has turned the dogs loose for the 2002 Zinfandel Dogtown Vineyard, the finest Zinfandel I have ever tasted from Lodi. This 750-case offering tips the scales at a whopping 16.5% alcohol, all of it well-hidden beneath extravagantly rich fruit. This deep ruby/purple-tinged Zin smells like brandy-macerated jammy black cherries intermixed with dried Provencal herbs, ground pepper, and other exotic spices. An exceptionally powerful, mouthfilling, palate staining effort with enormous richness and purity as well as a blockbuster finish, it is clearly not a Zinfandel for those who enjoy wimpy wines. It should be consumed over the next 4-5 years. |

VM 92 (6/2006): Good ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines blueberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice and flowers. Dense, peppery and sweet, with briary berry flavors complemented by dark chocolate. Finishes with chewy, building tannins and a flavor of black cherry. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 91 (6/2006): Good full ruby. Aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, espresso and pepper show an almost liqueur-like ripeness. Fat, velvety and broad, with very ripe flavors of roasted fruits and licorice. A saline character contributes to the wine's impression of thickness. Not hugely fruity, but finishes with sweet tannins and excellent length. WA 89-91 (12/2005): The 2004 Zinfandel Dusi Vineyard is well-made, but not one of the top wines of this portfolio. WS 87 (10/2006): Firm, dense and concentrated, with layers of currant, blueberry, spice and sage. The tannins are raw and intense, yet the flavors are focused, ending with a slight raisin edge. Decant. Drink now through 2009. |

WA 96 (8/2003): The 2001 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard’s black/purple color is accompanied by a compelling bouquet of black fruits, graphite, and white flowers reminiscent of a top-flight Hermitage. Tremendously rich, full-bodied, and viscous, with 13.2% alcohol, sweet tannin, and well-integrated wood, this profound Petite Syrah will be at its finest between 2008-2020+. This is truly magnificent stuff with great purity, length, and intensity. |

VM 94 (5/2015): Healthy bright ruby; really remarkably fresh color for a 13-year-old wine. Compelling, rather primary nose offers scents of raspberry, lavender, mocha and game. Thick and opulent in the mouth, but with plenty of acidity to counter its very rich flavors of blackberry, black raspberry, espresso and licorice. A distinctly wild wine that still needs a few years for its substantial fine-grained tannins to resolve. Very long on the aftertaste. A spectacular Petite Sirah. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 93-95 (2/2005): The 2003 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard displays the telltale squid ink-like color with some purple hues, and a stupendous nose of pure, black fruits intermixed with minerals, licorice, and incense. Full-bodied, with massively extracted flavors but incredibly well-balanced and vibrant, this wine needs 5-10 years of bottle-age and should age effortlessly for a quarter of a century. |

WA 92-94 (12/2006): Not surprisingly, one of the great Petite Syrahs made in this vintage has again come from the Hayne Vineyard. Turley’s inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses a boatload of tannin as well as a fabulously concentrated attack and mid-palate. This full-bodied monster reveals beautiful purity and intensity as well as a superb attack and richness. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the next 20-25 years. VM 91 (6/2007): Bright medium ruby. High-toned nose shows a porty ripeness to the black raspberry and bitter chocolate flavors. Wonderfully ripe, sweet and dense, with a plush texture and good inner-mouth lift. Not yet as complex as some past vintages of this wine, but the finish features impressive sweetness and a fine dusting of tannins. |

WA 93-96 (12/2007): Never disappointing, and usually one of the finest Petite Syrahs made in California, the 2006 Petite Sirah Hayne Vineyard once again hits on all cylinders. A blockbuster Petite Sirah, inky purple in color with a glorious nose of charcoal, black raspberry, blueberry, creme de cassis, licorice, and crushed rocks, it is very full-bodied, powerful, with sweet tannin, decent acidity, and a 45+-second finish. This is an infantile wine that will benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and last 25-30+ years. VM 92-93 (6/2008): Saturated ruby. Exotic berries, fruity peppercorn, bitter chocolate, flowers, mocha and wet slate on the nose. Wonderfully sappy and fruity in the mouth, with terrific definition to the flavors of crushed dark berries, pepper and spices, along with a suggestion of exotic apricot. The pepper and spice elements linger impressively on the seriously tannic finish. |

VM 93-96 (12/2016): The 2015 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses a gorgeous structural spine to balance the intense, inky fruit. Chocolate, plum, spice and succulent red cherry notes abound in this creamy, super-expressive Petite. In 2015, the Hayne is ample, deep and beautifully rendered. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 94-96 (12/2010): It was difficult to chose a favorite although the 2009 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge, Hayne Vineyard and Library Vineyard are the three greatest in terms of concentration, depth and potential complexity. As I have said so many times, Petite Sirah is by far the most underrated varietal in California, so it is reassuring to see how many producers continue to make remarkable wines with around 13-14% alcohol as well as 20-40+ years of aging potential. |

WA 95+ (4/2016): Noticeably floral with blueberries and blackberries is the 2014 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard, from a site adjacent to the Hayne Vineyard on the back streets of St. Helena. Again, this has civilized tannins that are silky and well-integrated, followed by a wine with an enormous wealth of fruit, lavish concentration, and extravagant texture and richness. It is always hard to peg when these will hit full maturity, but this one has a good 5-10 years of development and should keep for three decades as well. |

VM 90+ (6/2006): Turley has taken over the farming of the vines in his block of this vineyard) Bright ruby. Quite primary on the nose, with a pronounced rocky character to the cool blackberry and mint aromas. Juicy and densely packed, with impressive concentration and breadth. Roasted raspberry and chocolate flavors are still a bit youthfully unevolved, and the wine's substantial building tannins argue for a year or so of patience. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 88-90 (12/2006): From a high elevation vineyard, the 2005 Zinfandel Mead Ranch Atlas Peak reveals a deep ruby/purple color as well as soft, spicy, herbal, forest floor notes interwoven with cherry, red and black currant, crushed rock, and earth characteristics. It should drink well for 4-5 years. |

VM 89 (6/2007): Deep medium ruby. Sappy, nuanced nose combines black fruits, pepper, licorice and tar. A bit brutal today, with strong acidity and a peppery character currently dominating the wine's savory fruit. Comes across as tight, even youthfully tough, with no easy sweetness. Not my favorite style of petite sirah. WA 88-90 (12/2006): Turley produces limited quantities of five impressive Petite Syrahs. The dense purple-hued 2005 Petite Syrah Turley Estate reveals strong tannins along with hints of incense, licorice, and blue as well as black fruits. It is a powerful red, but the tannin seems to be jagged at present. WS 81 (12/2008): Racy notes of wild berry are tangy and unusual against spicy, smoky notes. There are distinctly herbal and green flavors on the tannic, drying finish. Drink now through 2012. |
