BH 89 (1/2013): (from two different parcels of vines, one located in the premier cru Les Plantes, which was planted in 1968 and the second from the villages-level portion of La Combe d'Orveau, 60% of which is young vines and the remainder is 40+ year old vines.) A ripe and airy red berry fruit nose enjoys added breadth in the form of soft floral and wet stone nuances. The palate impression of the ultra-elegant and mineral-driven flavors is cool, pure and silky and I very much like the balance as well as the sense of underlying tension. An excellent villages with fine mid-term potential. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

VM 95 (4/2009): Bright, dark red. Pure but subdued aromas of raspberry, minerals, rose petal and flinty stone. Wonderfully suave on entry, then vibrant and sappy in the middle, with pungent raspberry and crushed stone flavors boasting Outstanding density and freshness. Mounts impressively on the back half, finishing with Outstanding lift and perfume and broad, fine-grained tannins that reach the front teeth. Exciting wine. WA 93 (5/2010): Pale+ ruby-purple colour. The nose is a little closed to begin with subtle aromas of moss, warm cranberry, wilted rose petals and cinnamon. The palate provides medium to high acidity and a medium+ level of grainy, slightly chewy tannins. Generous red berry fruit in the mouth with a long finish leading into a more savour character. BH 93 (1/2009): (from old vines of an indeterminate age.) A highly expressive and complete knockout of a nose is classic Amoureuses as it combines seductive spice and a ripe blend of red, black and blue fruit aromas trimmed in subtle floral notes that complement the rich, sweet, fresh and energetic medium full flavors that are supple and classy, supported by sophisticated tannins and simply gorgeous purity of expression on the terrifically long finish. Impressive in every respect. Drink 2016+. Outstanding! |

BH 90 (1/2005): ( from 50 year old vines - this is Mugnier's favorite vineyard in terms of its fruit quality). There is more of everything here with much deeper and more expressive aromas of black cherry fruit nuanced by really impressive complexity and depth followed by richer, sweeter, sappier flavors that offer excellent length. A very fine effort with solid balance and one that should age extremely well. Drink 2010+. Outstanding! VM 90 (4/2005): Palish color. Aromas of raspberry, smoke, brown spices and menthol. Silky for the vintage, and deeper than the village wine, with strawberry syrup and brown spice flavors supported by underlying stoniness. Clearly longer on the aftertaste. WA 89-91 (6/2004): Powerful floral elements perfume the red berry aromas of the 2002 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees. Sensual, medium-bodied, and silky-textured, it gracefully dances across the palate releasing elegant red fruit flavors. This feminine wine would a delight to drink right from the barrel. Projected maturity: now-2012. WS 89 (12/2005): This is full of spicy, pure cherry notes. Delicate and juicy, with finesse and firm, dense tannins. Fine, racy acidity. Drink now through 2012. 400 cases made. |

WA 92 (12/2009): Peat, black tea, game, mint, crushed stone, and dark berry aromas rise in at once sinister and enticing profusion from the glass of Mugnier's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees. Corresponding low-toned complexity characterizes the opulently-textured and caressing, bittersweet palate. Stony minerality proves the most tenaciously aspect of this dark beauty's long, soothing, yet almost brooding finish. It sent chills back up my spine just transcribing my tasting note and recreating this wine's uncanny, hard-to-describe character. I suspect it will be worth following for ten or a dozen years, probably longer. The track record at this address is more than merely convincing. VM 92 (4/2009): Bright, dark red. Fresh, complex nose melds musky raspberry, smoky minerality, brown spices, mocha and underbrush. Lush and fat with fruit; in fact, this is amazingly opulent for 2006 but almost magically weightless. Finishes very long, sweet and perfumed, with substantial fine tannins and notes of game and spice. Very impressive. BH 92 (1/2009): (from 50+ year old vines - this is Mugnier's favorite vineyard in terms of its fruit quality) This too is notably ripe yet airy with a mix of dark pinot fruit and violets that merge into fresh, racy and more mineral-infused medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced, sweet and impressively deep finish sporting plenty of energy. This too is very Chambolle, light on its feet with fine tannins and beautiful transparency. Recommended. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! |

WA 90 (6/2010): Chateau de Chambolle’s 2007 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees transports the taster to a dark forest floor full of passing game. But there is ripe fruit, too, in the form of mace-tinged lightly-cooked plum and black raspberry. With an almost stewed palate richness, this may not be especially Chambolle-typical; but it’s nonetheless satisfying, leading to a finish in which the animal and woodsy elements as well as those of spice and fruit are present in equal measure, ‘though I suspect that over the next 4-6 years - when I anticipate this being most fun to drink - the balance will tip in the carnal direction. BH 89 (1/2010): As it virtually always is, this is notably more complex and a bit riper as well with red and black berry aromas that exhibit wet stone and herbal nuances that signal the presence of an intense minerality on the textured and ultra pure medium-bodied flavors that are focused, intense and sneaky long as the finish returns and then returns again. Lovely, understated and well-balanced save for a touch of backend edginess that may or may not round out in time. Drink: 2014+ VM 89 (4/2010): Good bright, deep red. Very ripe suggestion of cherry liqueur on the nose. Sweet, pliant and fat with fruit, with the musky red fruit notes nicely complemented by smoky minerality. Less detailed than usual for this cuvee but finishes broad and classically dry. |

BH 94 (7/2011): In the last three years, this has become less aromatically reserved and now less coaxing is required to reveal remarkably complex aromas of a simply incredible panoply of black fruits, earth, spice, crushed herbs and notes of red and black cherries. The understated, powerful, very concentrated, perfectly harmonious flavors are astonishingly rich yet finely detailed, culminating in a stupendously long finish that offers intense minerality. This possesses superb elegance and stunning transparency - moreover, it possesses that extra dimension, that of the rare "wow" factor! Note that while this is still on the way up, it can be approached now with a great deal of pleasure and once it arrives at its peak in 5 to 8 years, it should be capable of holding there for several decades. Try from 2016+. VM 94 (3/2004): Ruby-tinged red color. Deeply pitched, musky aromas of raspberry, black plum, pepper, coffee and menthol. Very rich and supple but backward, with slightly medicinal dark fruit flavors lifted by a note of white pepper. Slow-building finish features superb sweetness and classy tannins. And yet I find the Amoureuses to be a bit more vibrant today. The young vines here were planted in 1958 and 1963, while the older plantings date back to the 1948-1952 period. |

VM 94 (4/2007): Deep red. Classic aromas of small wild red berries, mocha and underbrush. Broad, sweet and deep-particularly impressive in the context of the vintage-without any loss of clarity or aromatic lift. Wonderfully suave, full wine that's also surprisingly tastable today. Finishes with noble tannins, noteworthy sweetness of fruit and terrific lift. This one should probably be laid down for seven or eight years. BH 93 (3/2008): Not surprisingly, this really hasn't budged much from my initial in-bottle review published in early 2007 and I repeat that review here as it's entirely on track, both in terms of the description but also with respect to its evolution. A simply sublime mix of spicy, elegant, pure and sophisticated red and black fruit aromas that do possess the barest trace of crushed leaf blend into supple, rich and again, extremely pure, indeed crystalline medium full flavors that are restrained and backward but not stern like those of the Bonnes Mares, all wrapped in a vibrant finish of exceptional intensity. This is superbly well focused and almost etches itself into the palate though the tannic spine is well buffered by plenty of mid-palate sap. A complete wine that will also demand a bit of patience. Drink: Try from 2014+ |

VM 96+ (3/2009): Deep red with ruby tones. Flamboyantly ripe aromas of black fruits, blood orange, peony and espresso. Huge yet weightless, saturating every square millimeter of the mouth with very ripe dark fruits, minerals and spices. This plush, sweet, extremely unevolved wine is almost monolithic today but the explosive, palate-staining finish suggests that it has a slow and glorious evolution ahead of it. The fruit here was picked with potential alcohol of 13.7%, the same as in 2005. Stephen Tanzer. WA 95-96 (12/2009): Cassis, blackberry, licorice, vanilla, smoky black tea, and lily perfume wafting from the glass of Chateau de Chambolle's 2006 Musigny seduce the senses. The sheer sappy, palate-staining bittersweet fruit concentration here is remarkable, with the wine's strong undertone of wet stone seemingly acting as a sounding board. This displays an uncanny combination of sheer density with reverberative, vibrant energy and buoyancy that are consistent with the best wines of this vintage, but that this wine displayed to a considerable extent in 2005, too. This is one to cherish for the next 15-20 years. BH 95 (1/2009): A gorgeously elegant and kaleidoscopic nose of high-toned red and black berry fruit aromas liberally laced with natural spices that offer impressive nuance and notable complexity introduces supple, finely detailed and beautifully textured flavors wrapped in a dusty, mineral-infused finish. This dances on the palate yet it is forceful with excellent finishing drive and intensity on the explosive and hugely long, slightly austere finale. This is one of those 'wow' wines as well as one of the best wines of the vintage. Drink 2018+. |

VM 93 (3/2010): Bright, deep red. Knockout aromas and flavors of black cherry, black raspberry, crushed stone and smoky minerality. Wonderfully deep, tangy and sweet, with a captivating creamy texture making this deceptively tastable today. Impressive today for its volume, and finishes very long, broad and classically dry, with substantial fine-grained tannins. As delicious as this is right now, its overall balance suggests it will reward a decade of aging. For his part, Mugnier says that virtually every vintage of his Musigny needs ten years in the bottle. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 98 (1/2012): As brilliant the nose of the Amoureuses might be, this ups the ante considerably as this offers fireworks in a glass with its positively kaleidoscopic array of spice, violets and ripe fruit elements that if anything are even fresher. The rich, dense and overtly powerful broad-scaled flavors possess a tight muscularity yet remain elegant and refined with a linear, palate staining and explosive backend that delivers simply huge length. An incredible effort that should live for a very long time indeed. The word fabulous does not do this monument in the making complete justice. Drink 2029+. WA 98 (4/2012): The 2009 Musigny is a huge, structured wine within the context of the domaine. Big, tannins support a highly expressive core of dark fruit, smoke and licorice. This is a decidedly powerful, almost extreme style of Musigny that will require considerable patience to settle down. An explosive, mineral-drenched finish lingers on the palate. The 2009 is flat-out dazzling. Wow. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. VM 93-95 (2/2011): Good deep red. Very dark, complex aromas of blackberry, violet and licorice, lifted by a peppery nuance; slightly liqueur-like. Then powerful and large-scaled, with confectionery dark berry and pepper flavors saturating the entire mouth. With so much baby fat here, I don't yet find a great deal of detail. Mugnier notes that this is 14.5% alcohol. |

VM 98+ (4/2013): Deep, dark, saturated red. Knockout nose combines black cherry, black raspberry, minerals, graphite and licorice. Like liquid silk in the mouth, conveying great thickness of texture without any weight. Noble, utterly vibrant wine with near-perfect balance and a finish that mounts for two minutes or more. A sappy essence of Burgundy. Mugnier calls 2010 "Burgundy at its best," and this wine makes his case. BH 97 (1/2013): Here the broad ranging nose is actually similar to that of the Amoureuses but it's both cooler and even more restrained. The penetratingly mineral-driven large-scaled flavors are an exercise in refinement with tremendous depth of material that pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the palate staining, linear and stunning intense finish. This magnificent effort is regal and aloof at this point and is conceding little in terms of accessibility yet it's irreproachably well-balanced which should permit this magnificent effort to develop slowly but surely over the next 15 plus years. The 2010 Musigny is yet another in a long line of great vintages of this wine from Mugnier. WA 96-98 (2/2012): The 2010 Musigny is breathtaking. It is at once weightless yet full of flavor and dynamism. There is marvelous tension and sheer energy in the fruit, while certain elements of virility - especially in the tannin - seem to develop as the wine sits in the glass. Like all of the Mugnier wines, the Musigny is really a wine built on textural finesse and a certain elusiveness that asks more of the taster than it offers. It represents the height of sensuality and unknowable beauty in Burgundy. In many ways Mugnier’s Musigny resembles Domaine de la Romanee-Conti’s Romanee-Conti. No matter how much time I spend with the wine there is always more to discover. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2045. |

BH 93 (1/2022): This is aromatically quite discreet with its subtly perfumed nose that is composed of plum, dark cherry, violet, lavender and orange pekoe tea plus the first hints of secondary development. This is at once silky but powerful with plenty of minerality characterizing the velvet-textured big-bodied flavors that coat the mouth with dry extract that also serves to buffer the markedly firm tannic spine on the balanced and hugely long but presently compact finish. This classy and very stylish effort is still sufficiently backward to need close to another decade in a cool cellar though with that said, it's not so tightly wound as to be completely impenetrable if decanted for an hour first. I would add that I will want to see how the fruit evolves relative to the structure because based on this bottle, the nose is a bit more evolved. Drink starting 2029. VM 96.5 (3/2017): Bright medium red More expressive on the nose today than the Amoureuses, offering ineffable scents of black raspberry, lavender and flinty, smoky minerality By far the plushest and deepest of these 2014s but still with outstanding definition and verve This wonderfully fine-grained, classically dry Musigny boasts bulletproof fruit and finishes with impressive medicinal reserve Beginning with the 2013 Musigny, Mugnier will be delaying the release of his top bottling for a minimum of two years--and possibly several years more than that--as he finds this wine especially hard to read in its extreme youth. Drink between 2026-2040. Stephen Tanzer. |

WS 90 (3/2007): Bright cherry, raspberry and juniper notes mingle in this rich, supple red. Almost elegant, with a swath of dense yet well-integrated tannins and lively acidity keeping it defined. Best from 2008 through 2016. 2,250 cases made. BH 89 (3/2008): This reflects the elegance that can be found in Premeaux and the Mugnier touch only adds to this with a nicely complex and aromatically expressive nose that offers detailed and pure aromas of earth, black fruit and plum that dissolve into beautifully complex, refined and balanced flavors that also display ample finishing minerality and better overall phenolic ripeness. A really lovely effort that should age effortlessly and while this presently has a touch of forest floor on the nose, I suspect that it will pass in time. Try from 2012+. VM 88 (4/2007): Good full red. Ripe aromas of blackberry and black cherry. Juicy and aromatic in the mouth, with more obvious ripeness and texture than the young-vines Clos des Fourches. The perfumed cherry flavor carries through to the floral finish, which features dusty tannins but avoids the dryness of the Clos des Fourches. As with the 2005 version, this strikes me as Nuits in a Chambolle style. |

VM 92 (4/2009): Saturated red-ruby color. Pure, vibrant nose features smoky black cherry. Rich, sweet and pure, with superb energy to the flavors of black and red cherry and minerals. Impressively dense, broad wine, finishing with excellent lingering perfume and solid spine for aging. In comparison to this wine, the 2005 version seems a bit easier. BH 91 (6/2009): Here the nose is understandably quite similar to the nose of the Fourche with an earthy and moderately sauvage nose of dark berry fruit, underbrush and a hint of stone that is picked up by the rich, sweet and intense yet stylish medium full flavors that are unusually pure for a typical Nuits while wrapped in a finish supported by quite firm, dusty and mouth coating tannins. This possesses really fine depth and the firm structure is sufficiently buried that the finish appears less structured than it really is. Drink 2013+. |

WA 90 (6/2010): Mugnier’s 2007 Nuits-St.-Georges Clos de la Marechale elicits aromatic allusions to ripe black raspberry, cedar, cardamom, burley tobacco, nut oils, and game, delivering a similar sense of complexity on a relatively rich if conspicuously tannin-girded palate. The sheer sap and finishing grip in evidence here suggest that one might want to follow the wine for 4-6 years in anticipation that the tannins will refine themselves. VM 90 (4/2010): Good deep red. Blueberry, licorice, brown spices and menthol on the complex nose. Richer and broader than the village wine, with more intense and complex flavors of spicy black and red berries, leather and minerals. Finishes dense, broad and spicy, with substantial fine tannins. An excellent Nuits-Saint-George wine. BH 89 (6/2010): An expressive nose of green apple, white flower and lemon zest aromas trimmed in a deft touch of wood merges into rich, clean and beautifully detailed middle weight flavors that possess a fine sense of underlying tension and punch on the layered and very dry finish that lingers nicely. Lovely and balanced. Drink: 2012+ |

WA 92 (5/2011): The 2008 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale offers up black cherries, sweet spices, flowers and licorice, all of which meld together beautifully in a weightless, impeccably elegant style. Floral, minty notes add complexity and nuance on the refined finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020. VM 90 (4/2011): Good medium red. Ripe, aromatic nose of dark berries, licorice and flowers, complicated by musky leather and earth nuances. Much sweeter and richer, not to mention refined, than the Clos des Fourches, which is made mostly from younger vines in the Clos. Spice and pepper notes contribute to this wine's juiciness, and a whiff of blood orange adds lift. Finishes long and firm but not dry. Youthfully tight but sexy wine. BH 90 (1/2011): A distinctly earthy and anise-infused mix of sour cherry and blue berry fruit that displays whiffs of crushed herbs and pepper merges into detailed, pure and almost delicate middle weight flavors that possess a sophisticated mouth feel and fine length. I should point out though that while there is no rusticity present, the very firm tannins are not as refined as those of the Fuees. Drink 2016+. |

BH 92 (6/2012): I clearly misjudged this because while this is slightly riper than its 2010 counterpart with its mildly exotic yellow fruit aromas of honey, straw, peach and mango, there is genuinely excellent depth to the textured and opulent middle weight flavors that really coat the palate with dry extract. But it's the impressive length that really sets this apart from the 2010 because while this is a powerful vintage for the Clos de la Marechale, it is the moderately firm acid spine that shapes the finish and imparts a real sense of focus. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! WA 92 (4/2012): The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale shows the more virile side of Pinot. Black cherries smoke, tar and licorice all come to life in this intense, broad-shouldered wine. Layers of fruit build to the muscular, virile finish. The wine’s masculine personality is quite a contrast to the seductiveness of Mugnier’s other 2009s. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. VM 89-92 (2/2011): Good deep red-ruby. Blackberry liqueur, minerals and crushed stone on the nose, along with an earthy nuance. Large-scaled, lush and sweet, with a creamy, chocolatey flavor saturating the palate. This big, slightly rough wine benefits from its substantial tannins, which help to balance the sweetness of the alcohol. The pHs of these grapes was the highest to date, noted Mugnier, but as there was so little malic acidity, the post-ML pH is now just a bit higher than average. Mugnier told me there would probably be no Clos des Forches bottling, as he needed to include some of the less-ripe juice in the Clos de la Marechale. (Incidentally, the very promising 2009 Marechale blanc, which had been racked into stainless steel tank in September and will be bottled in January, was dry, powerful, complex and gripping, with excellent energy and acidity for the vintage.) |

VM 92+ (3/2013): Very deep, bright red. Sappy black cherry, raspberry, cola and licorice on the nose, plus a whiff of animal fur. Big, deep and chocolatey, with serious depth of black cherry and dark berry fruit. The big Nuits-Saint-Georges tannins are sexed up by high-toned oak spices on the impressively long finish. Jacques-Frederic Mugnier punches down the cap late in the fermentation, when the juice is almost dry and the skins have softened, an approach that he believes results in a steadier uptake of sugar in his wines. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91 (6/2013): An all but invisible touch of wood sets off pretty and cool aromas of citrus rind, dried floral nuances and a hint of minerality. There is good richness and plenty of verve to the well-detailed middle weight flavors that possess a sappy mouth feel on the mouth coating and bone dry finish. This is really quite good and while not a wine of particular refinement, there is excellent character and persistence. I like this as it's refreshing, well-balanced and has plenty of depth to it. Worth considering. Drink from 2015+. Outstanding! |

BH 92 (1/2014): Here too the nose seems to lack its usual freshness though there is good complexity to the red berry fruit that is liberally laced with earth and spice hints. There is a lilting mouth feel to the energetic, intense and equally pure medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of that beguiling sense of underlying tension that makes wines like this a joy to drink. Drink 2018+. |

BH 91 (1/2017): A perfumed and once again cool and airy nose displays notes of red currant, cherry and warm earth. There is excellent intensity to the energetic middle weight flavors that possess good precision on the firm and dusty but not really rustic finish that delivers excellent persistence. This balanced effort is a bit more structured than it typically is and will definitely require a few years before it will be approachable. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

BH 93 (1/2023): An exceptionally pretty, indeed even perfumed, nose reflects aromas of dark currant, poached plum, newly turned earth and subtle anise hints. The refined and intense flavors possess good if not special density along with a beguiling sense of underlying tension that carries over to the dusty, youthfully austere, compact and lingering finish. This is unusually powerful, if a bit less refined, compared to its usual understated character and overall, it is really quite impressive. VM 89 (1/2023): The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has a lovely dark plummy bouquet, kirsch and a touch of liquorice, perhaps a little sur-maturité. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, black cherries, hints of peppermint with a cassis finish. Maybe this just doesn't quite deliver the persistency that I anticipated when I tasted this from barrel. Neal Martin. |
