WA 95 (10/2014): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus exhibits that Calistoga earthiness along with fabulously rich blackcurrant fruit intermixed with darker berries, loamy soil notes and high-quality, unsmoked cigar tobacco. Deep, full-bodied and opulent, this terrific Cabernet Sauvignon has some upfront drinkability, but also the structure and muscle to last 15-20 years.
JS 95 (7/2015): A rich and flamboyant red with dark berry, chocolate and spice character. Verges on jammy. Full, round and rich. Long finish. Tannin tension holds it together. Drink or hold. |

WA 98 (12/2017): Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Amoenus Cabernet Sauvignon features vibrant, youthful crushed blackberry and black currant notes with touches of wild thyme, charcoal, pencil shavings and damp soil. Full-bodied, richly fruited and packed with vivacious black fruit and savory layers, it has lovely, ripe, grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing with great persistence. 240 cases produced.
JD 97 (12/2017): From a site in the northern part of the Valley, in Calistoga, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus offers a perfect expression of this ripe, sexy vintage. Loaded with notions of blackberry jam, toasted spice, dried flowers and licorice, it has a beautiful opulence and sweetness of fruit that stays balanced, elegant and fresh. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in 80% new French oak, it has awesome tannin quality, a majestic, layered personality, and will drink nicely for three decades. |

| JD 98+ (1/2021): Looking at the two 2018s, the 2018 Amoenus comes from the Blossom Creek Vineyard outside of Calistoga and was brought up in new French oak. Both 2018s are concentrated, powerful wines. The Amoenus possesses a beautiful sense of freshness and purity, yet backs that up with a huge, opulent profile that carries incredible black and blue fruits. Showing more chocolate, tobacco, graphite, and foresty, earthy notes with air, this full-bodied beauty has ample ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly shows the more brooding, backward, powerful style of the vintage and is built for the long haul. Hide bottle for 5-7 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 40 years or so. |

| WA 95 (12/2007): Named after the famed luxury car, Maybach has none other than Thomas Brown as its winemaker, who produced this debut vintage of 340 cases from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a single-parcel on the Silverado Trail in the Oakville sector. This is a deadly serious wine, and when compared to the price of a Maybach car, a great value. A beautifully sculptured style of wine with deep purple color, with a sweet nose of creme de cassis, pain grille, spice box, and loamy soil notes, the wine has fabulous intensity, great purity (as one might expect given the winemaker), sweet silky tannins, and a terrific finish of close to 50 seconds. This is a stunning opening salvo from the Maybach family, and a wine that should age easily for 20-25 years. |

| VM 91 (6/2008): Lovely perfume to the slightly exotic aromas of smoky raspberry, plum and spices. Sweet, dense, chewy and broad, but with firm acidity giving shape and aromatic lift to the berry, spice and floral flavors. Winemaker Thomas Brown noted that it was necessary to let the fruit hang for a long time to get thorough ripeness, even at the risk of picking a few raisins. And yet this retains a juicy quality and displays lovely lingering perfume. |

WA 94 (12/2008): The 2006 Materium may be an even greater achievement as it is an undeniably brilliant success in a less consistent vintage for Bordeaux varietals. Full-bodied and powerful with surprisingly silky tannins, it exhibits abundant black fruit, charcoal, and loamy soil characteristics as well as a 40-45-second finish. This stunning 2006 should age effortlessly for 25+ years.
VM 93 (6/2009): Deep, bright ruby-red. Very ripe, soil-driven aromas of currant, blueberry, black cherry, menthol, smoke and tobacco, complicated by mint and creosote. Densely packed and very ripe but with a suave character and harmonious acidity. Smoke, mint and rocky notes complicate the dark fruit flavors. Finishes with big, broad tannins and excellent length. This 100%-cabernet sauvignon wine, made from the Weitz Vineyard above Dalla Valle, has a pH under 3.6 with alcohol of 15.5%, according to winemaker Thomas Brown. |

WA 99 (12/2009): The prodigious 2007 Materium exhibits an even more opaque purple color, and ratchets up the level of intensity and aromatic complexity. Blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, and cassis aromas intermixed with notes of crushed rocks, spring flowers, and toasty new oak are found in this beauty. Outstanding intensity along with full-bodied power and beautifully integrated acids, tannins, alcohol, and wood suggest this 2007 should hit its peak in 5-7 years, and evolve for three decades or more.
VM 94 (6/2010): Good full ruby. Sweet, ripe aromas of dark berries, graphite and flowers. Creamy and lush, with an almost confectionery sweetness leavened by exotic floral lift and perfectly integrated acidity. This wine, which comes from a vineyard above Dalla Valle and Showket in the eastern hills of Oakville, has a relatively low 3.5 pH and was harvested in mid-October. Sexy soil tones add complexity. Finishes with broad tannins, excellent grip and length, and lingering sweetness. This is seamless in the way of many 2007s but not at all heavy. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 96 (12/2010): The 2008 Materium comes from a single block called the Weitz Vineyard at a 1,000-foot elevation on the eastern hillsides of Oakville. It would be hard to improve upon the virtually perfect 2007, but the 2008 is not far behind. Notes of graphite, blueberry, charcoal, spring flowers, and some background oak are followed by a dense, purple-colored wine with full-bodied power, great elegance, precision, and purity. This is again an extraordinary effort from Maybach. It should drink well for 20-25 years.
VM 92-95 (6/2010): Good bright ruby. Penetrating, focused, highly perfumed aromas of dark berries, minerals and flowers. Then quite tightly coiled and primary in the mouth, but already showing an exhilarating combination of sweetness and energy. Not at all an opulent style and yet this conveys a real impression of afternoon sun. Finishes with slow-mounting, very ripe flavors and plenty of sap. |

WA 94 (12/2011): The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium is a gorgeous, polished wine graced with exquisite detail, clarity and focus. Tobacco, cedar and sweet spices add complexity to the fruit in this powerful, expressive 2009. Layers of dark red fruit, mocha and mint wrap around the striking, seamless finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2019.
VM 92-95 (6/2011): Full ruby-red. Reticent, subtle nose hints at cassis, tar, licorice pastille and smoke; conveys a darker quality than the 2008. Dense, backward and deep, with black fruit and licorice flavors showing an almost grapey primary character today. Focused, structured and tannic wine, extremely unevolved today. Seems less sweet than the 2008. Hard to taste now but this is likely to be long-lived. Winemaker Thomas Brown told me that the wine has been racked just twice to this point and will be bottled in June. |

| JD 100 (12/2021): If you can believe it, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium might be even better, and this beauty tops out my scale. An incredible array of red, blue, and black fruits as well as unsmoked tobacco, iron, hazelnut, and toasty oak all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, ultra-fine, building texture, perfect tannins, and a huge finish. This pure Napa Valley magic is going to benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar and drink brilliantly for another 20-30 years. If this doesn't do it for you, I'd avoid Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon! |
