FTLOP 95+ (5/2010): Medium ruby with bricking on the edge. Some candied scents with prune, figs, hazelnuts and dark toffee. Rich, soft and viscous with a massive palate appeal, hot in the mid-section and could use another 3 hours decant time. It's offering complex layers, focused by the acidity and it exhibits great intensity and verve. Medium tannins still deliver grip. Fine extraction, smooth, elegant and deftly balanced with a profound aftertaste. Great now, but it has an unquestionably long life ahead of 3 decades. A fabulous 1970 Graham. MB [***[*]] (5/2002): The Graham family's last vintage. Originally (July 1972) opaque, still deep, plummy and fairly intense, showing rich extract; fragrant, high-toned yet harmonious bouquet though still a bit hard; very sweet, full-bodied, lots of fruit, grip, length, tannin and acidity. Chocolate and spice. Well over two dozen notes since 1982, all consistently good. In the mid-1990s, lovely, distinctive, very sweet. Equal top marks, Oporto-bottled, at Gidleigh Park, still with leathery tannins. Coping miraculously at a Zachys/Christie's charity dinner with chocolate souffle. Showing well at the Primum Familiae Vini dinner at VInopolois in November 2000. A superb bottle at a dinner party at home, May 2001. Most recently: soft tawny-red; gloriously fragrant and folwery; complete, exellent. Drink now-2020. WA 93 (12/1989): Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their tawnys are quite good rather than exceptional, but their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous. The 1970 is a monumental vintage port and one of the greats of the vintage. It begs to be drunk now, although it will last for at least another two decades. WS 94 (12/1989): This is an extremely full-bodied, powerful wine, but it still retains a classy balance. Deep ruby, with chocolate and berry aromas, full-bodied, with anise and dried cherry flavors, full, hard tannins and a long finish. Good now but a few more yearsof bottle age would improve it. MB [****[*]] (12/1999): A very good wine. Almost black in colour in 1979: a big, apple-nosed, very sweet, rich but angular wine. Gradual colour loss through the 1980's but, as it matured, a wonderful melange of fragrances developing: liquorice, strawberry, fig; fleshy, lovely fruit. Nearly 20, always admiring, notes. Showing well at Gidleigh Park port tasting in 1995: medium-deep with red-brown rim; very rich, powerful bouquet opening up beautifully; sweet, good body and backbone, marvellous length, spicy finish. Most recently: delicious! Now-2030. FTLOP 93+ (3/2006): The nose shows some spicy elements and an herbal essence that add intricacy to the fresh raspberry aroma that showed no outward sign of spirit. Finally! I have never been a fan of this VP and it has always been a thorn in my side, even when put in front of me in a handful of 'blind' tests ('let's fool Roy'). However, this particular bottle made me think that at nearly 30, this wine has finally hit its stride. The alcohol did not stand out like a sore thumb which has been my main concern in every previous tasting. On the contrary, this seemed like a well-integrated, soft and smooth Port with plenty of stuffing. Bottles of this quality should drink best circa 2015-2025. |

WA 95 (10/2016): The 1994 Vintage Port is going to be re-released. It has about 100 grams per liter of residual sugar. With a big eucalyptus note up front, this is elegant in the mid-palate with controlled tannins. Sweet and easy in some ways, this is readily approachable now, perhaps not at peak, but more expressive than the relatively brooding Dow's, also reviewed. The hint of caramel and raisins mixed with sugar makes this irresistible. It is sexy and intriguing. WS 95 (4/1997): A big, tough, young vintage Port that's closed and difficult to taste. Emits lovely aromas of chocolate, berry and plum, and is full-bodied with lots of sweet, fruit flavors and masses of velvety tannins. Long, sweet finish. Best after 2010. 11,000 cases made. MB [*[****]] (9/1999): Wonderful wine, its richness masking its 20% brandy at the Symington tasting in April 1996. I also noted an excellent '94 bottled in 1999 on a British Airways flight to New York in September 1999. Great wine. Drink 2006-2030. |

WS 98 (5/2003): Smells like freshly picked orchids, with loads of ripe, clean fruit. Full-bodied, medium sweet and very powerful and racy. It lasts for minutes on your palate. Yet there's a balance and class to this young Vintage Port. This is the greatest glass of Graham I have ever tasted, young or old. Best after 2014. 9,000 cases made. FTLOP 96 (6/2006): Went through a recent modernization and the Symington's have upgraded their fermenting tanks and put innovative robotic lagares into use for this vintage 60% of the grapes came from these lagares. They are the first Shippers to use them in production of a Vintage Porto after experimentation over the past several years. The grapes for the Graham blend were grown at Malvedos, Quinta do Vila Velha and Quinta do Vale de Malhadas for the 2000 VP. Dark purplish-black with fully opacity. Fine aromas of plum and dark cherry which translates to the sweet grapey palate with some ripe, jammy, dark berry fruit as well. Not a subtle VP by any means, with a focused, seamless structure and well-integrated round tannins. Some hot spirity character on the otherwise smooth, sweet finish was the only blemish on this excellent wine. This is not atypical though for young Graham's and in vintages like 1985 this resolved in time, albeit that is not the case with the 1977. The Graham is certainly amongst the top wines of the vintage although it is my second favorite Symington Vintage Porto from 2000. WA 94 (10/2002): Grapy, unformed, black raspberry liqueur and licorice-infused cassis notes leap from the glass of this opaque purple-colored wine. Sweet, plush, rich, and accessible, it is a forward, lush, concentrated effort that should drink well for two decades. While not one of Graham's most profound ports, it should evolve rapidly, providing immense crowd appeal. VM 94 (2/2003): Saturated black-ruby. Superripe, bottomless nose of black fruits, mocha, bitter chocolate and flowers. Hugely sweet, dense and rich. A port of Outstanding opulence and creamy texture; deceptively easy to taste. Substantial, sweet, spreading tannins are buried under a wave of fruit. Extremely long, fruit-driven finish. |

WA 97 (2/2010): A candidate for wine of the vintage, the 2007 Graham’s Vintage Port is complete in every way. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up an ethereal perfume of smoke, mineral, Asian spices, incense, an amalgam of ripe black fruits, and a hint of chocolate in the background. This leads to a dense, super-rich, plush, opulent wine that hides its structure under all the fruit. Vibrant, impeccably balanced, and exceptionally lengthy, it will easily age for another 25-30 years in the cellar and drink well through 2050, probably longer. It is a tour de force. WS 96 (5/2010): Rich and chewy, with masses of blueberry, blackberry and raisin character. Full-bodied and very sweet, with a long, powerful finish. Big and juicy, with ultraripe fruit. Racy and full of class. Like cashmere in texture. Best after 2018. 6,000 cases made. |

VM 96+ (5/2014): Bright, deep, saturated ruby. Liqueur-like ripeness to the deeply fruity aromas of kirsch, black raspberry and cassis. Thick, sweet and seamless, with a silky texture and great depth to its utterly primary dark berry and spice flavors. Wonderfully pure, intense young port with Outstanding finishing sweetness, well-judged oakiness and big, ripe, noble tannins. Leaves behind exhilarating kirsch and violet notes on the extremely long finish, with a note of bitter chocolate emerging with extended aeration. This fleshy beauty boasts beautifully managed tannins and Outstanding aging potential. Stephen Tanzer. |
