VM 94-96 (1/2020): The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a finely detailed bouquet, the 30% whole bunch nicely integrated and the absence of new oak allowing the ebullient black cherry and blueberry fruit to prosper. The focused palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and blessed with an impressive minerally finish that lingers for 45 seconds after the wine has departed. Superb. Neal Martin. |

BH 88-91 (1/2018): Firm reduction. The mouthfeel is at once more generous and finer with the hallmark Chambolle finesse that is even more apparent on the sneaky long finish. Where this falls a bit short, at least at present, is that it's not particularly complex though more depth should develop over time. Drink 2021+. |

BH 90-92 (1/2018): Reduction. There is more size, weight and punch to the lightly mineral-driven flavors that are more refined than usual while offering slightly better depth and persistence on the muscular and notably firmer finish. This balanced effort is quite serious and at least some patience will clearly be required. Drink 2024+. |

BH 91-94 (1/2012): (from a 1.2 ha parcel in Mazoyères). While perfumed and strikingly complex, this pretty array of red pinot fruit and earth aromas is much more reserved compared to the nose of the Combottes. The pure and refined middle weight flavors are so fine that they border on the delicate and I especially appreciate the silky texture on the firm, lingering and mouth coating finish. This is not overly complex at present but there is sufficient mid-palate concentration that my range offers the benefit of the doubt that it will develop much more in time. Drink 2022+ VM 90-93 (2/2012): (mostly vines from the "top strip" of Mazoyeres, plus a bit of true Charmes; 40% new oak): Good bright, deep red. Dark cherry, wild herbs and violet on the nose; smells powerful. Chewy and tactile on the palate but a bit youthfully closed-in, showing imploded black fruit flavors and conveying a classically dry impression. Not the last word in depth or length but this displays very good energy and lift--and more obvious tannins than the Clos de la Roche. |

WS 95 (11/2016): A powerful, dense version, evoking cherry, currant and spice flavors, with underlying accents of mineral and tobacco. Tight and chalky on the finish, but showing promise. Best from 2020 through 2040. 60 cases imported. WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very composed bouquet with intense red cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, offering that sensuality Burgundy-lovers seek from a Charmes-Chambertin. The palate is medium-bodied and showing the hand of the oak a little at the moment, but it is in proportion with the fruit and the finish maintains fine delineation. VM 90-92 (1/2016): (from vines in the highest part of Mazoyères): Healthy dark red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, anise and bitter chocolate show less floral character than the Combottes. Rich, fine-grained and deep, conveying a chocolatey ripeness but coming across as a bit earth-bound, with a slightly more rustic texture than the Combottes. This plush wine finishes with big, ripe, chewy tannins. BH 92-95 (1/2016): (from a 1.13 ha parcel in Mazoyères that abuts the Route des Grands Crus.) A more deeply pitched and notably earthier nose also displays plenty of sauvage character. This gamy element continues onto the concentrated medium weight plus flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel despite the evident muscularity of the austere and explosive finish. This is very Mazoyères in character yet it is a bit less rustic than usual. Worth a look provided that you have the patience to cellar it. Drink 2029+. |

JD 96 (11/2020): Partially destemmed and brought up in 20% new French oak, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a smoky, powerful bouquet of mulled black cherries, mulberries, candied violets, licorice, and forest floor. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, gorgeous wine with silky tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, plenty of structure, and a great, great finish. This is seriously good juice that's going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. (Drink between 2023-2043) VM 94 (11/2022): The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a sensual nose with vivacious red berry fruit, orange pith and light tertiary scents, becoming more and more loamy whilst retaining delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, creamy in texture that belies the structure underneath. Judiciously spiced towards the finish with just a very subtle menthol note, this is a classy offering. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. (Drink between 2026-2048) Neal Martin. |

VM 94-96 (1/2023): The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a little more "gourmand" on the nose, cohering with time in the glass, loamy, almost peaty aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-honed tannins. Lovely symmetry here, with a slight creaminess in texture towards the finish, where it feels very persistent. This is a lovely Charmes-Chambertin that should evolve wonderfully in bottle. Neal Martin. BH 90-92 (1/2023): A more deeply pitched combination offers up notes of plum, wild dark cherry and plenty of earth. The succulent and solidly powerful medium-bodied flavors are more muscular though not nearly as refined, all wrapped in a detailed, dusty and moderately austere finale that isn't quite as well-balanced. Drink 2033+. |

VM 89-91 (1/2023): The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is the most expressive and charming of Arlaud's Village Crus with lovely brambly red fruit mixed with sous-bois and light citrus scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety smooth entry, plush tannins, hints of kirsch and blood orange on the finish. Excellent. Neal Martin. BH 88-90 (1/2023): Reduction dominates the nose at present. I very much like the sophisticated texture of the lilting and refined barely middleweight flavors that also exhibit fine delineation on the more complex and longer if slightly austere finale. Drink 2028+. |

BH 89-92 (1/2020): (from .45 ha parcel of 70+ year old vines.) Here there is no reduction to the surprisingly high-toned aromas of red currant, black cherry and whiffs of herbal tea and rose petal. There is once again a really lovely texture to the round, plush and delicious medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a compact and firm finish that flashes a touch of edginess though markedly less so than the Sentiers. VM 95-979 (1/2023): The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is very convincing on the nose, a mixture of red and black fruit, forest floor, hints of crushed limestone and orange zest. So much vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with beautifully integrated oak, fine-grain tannins, taut and linear with a sublime, quite persistent finish that you just want to keep drinking again and again. Outstanding. Neal Martin. BH 90-93 (1/2023): Strikingly pure, airy and distinctly cool aromas include those of essence of red cherry, plum, violet and a whiff of anise character. The beautifully textured and highly sophisticated flavors coat the palate with dry extract on the sneaky long finish. This is a seriously pretty wine though it will need to add depth to merit the upper end of my projected range. Drink 2031+. |

BH 87-89 (1/2023): Here too there is enough reduction to suppress the underlying fruit. VM 93-95 (1/2023): The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is more introspective at the moment, with fine intensity, the fruit is darker than the Aux Chezaux, with hints of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, one of the "juiciest" Moreys that I have encountered with candied orange peel and spicebox on the finish. Superb. Neal Martin. |
