WA 95 (2/2005): The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Estate is a 2,550-case blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. It is aged 20 months in new French oak prior to bottling. This super effort comes across as a Napa version of top-flight Pauillac. Dense ruby/purple to the rim with a gorgeous nose of smoke, cedar, burning wood fires, and creme de cassis, this powerful, intensely rich, complex Cabernet reveals notions of chocolate, charcoal, and blackberry fruit. It should age effortlessly for up to 15 or more years. VM 90 (6/2005): (blended with 9% cabernet franc and 5% each petit verdot and malbec) Medium ruby. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, cedar, loam and menthol, with a whiff of roast coffee. Rich but dry and savory; smooth and aromatic. Subtly complex flavors of currant, lead pencil, cedar, loam and menthol. Finishes with plenty of fine tannins that will need a bit of time to unwind. |

WA 98+ (10/2019): This is the first vintage of this label, named after the recently departed Leslie Rudd, who particularly loved this vineyard. Composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 12% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot and 3% Malbec and aged for 22 months in French oak, 38% new, the 2016 Leslie’s Blend Mt. Veeder Estate displays a deep garnet-purple color. WOW - it has a fantastically profound nose of black currant cordial, plum preserves and mulberries with hints of mocha, aniseed, dried bay leaves, tilled soil and oolong tea. Full-bodied, the palate is laden with loads of black fruit and savory layers, featuring a rock-solid frame of ripe, fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. Still very youthful, give it another couple of years in bottle and drink it over the next 40 years+. VM 93 (1/2020): The 2016 Mt. Veeder Estate Leslie's Blend is powerful and dense, with tons of concentration and sheer richness. Gravel, smoke, spice, black fruit, chocolate and leather all develop nicely. In the end, though, the 2016 is dominated by heavy torrefaction notes from the oak, which masks some of the Veeder character. Now that the Edge Hill wines are under the Rudd label, my hope is that this bottling can be refined a bit. There is clearly so much potential here. (Drink between 2022-2036). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 97+ (1/2019): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Samantha's is made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 21 months in 86% new French oak. This is a vineyard selection blend usually harvested slightly later. Very deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with vibrant cassis, blackberry pie and preserved plums scents with nuances of mocha, pencil shavings, menthol, lilacs and cloves plus a touch of chargrilled meat. The medium to full-bodied palate is super intense with layer upon layer of black fruits, savory and floral notions and a rock-solid foundation of grainy tannins, finishing very long and very minerally. VM 97 (12/2018): The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Samantha's is magnificent. Powerful and sumptuous, with stunning inner perfume and sweetness, the 2016 is simply thrilling to taste. Bittersweet chocolate, plum, black cherry, lavender, spice and new leather take on added shades of richness and texture in this towering, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. Swaths of tannin build as this striking wine gains volume and intensity with air. In a word: superb! (Drink between 2021-2031). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 96+ (1/2021): Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Samantha's was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 68% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it slips slowly out of the glass with captivating scents of black raspberries, Morello cherries, black currant pastilles and rose oil, followed by suggestions of cedar chest, pencil lead and black olives. The full-bodied palate is charged with amazing energy, featuring vivacious red and black berry layers and a firm backbone of grainy tannins, lifted by refreshing acidity and bags of crunchy fruit on the long finish. 617 cases were made. VM 95 (1/2022): The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Samantha's is hollow, lacking in fruit and abrupt on the finish. Antonio Galloni. |
