VM 94 (6/2012): Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Napa Valley) Inky purple. Complex, heady bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, incense and dried flowers, with star anise and allspice overtones gaining strength with air. Juicy, palate-staining black raspberry and cassis flavors show excellent depth, with chewing tobacco and vanilla nuances contributing complexity. Finishes seamless and sweet, with outstanding energy and persistence. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 91 (10/2013): One of my personal favorites, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard possesses flinty, wet stone-like characteristics, more rugged tannins and an overall more masculine personality than the Las Piedras. Its concentration is impressive for a 2011, the tannins are ripe, and the wine is beefy and mouthfilling. Although it may lack some of the nuances typical for this site, it is definitely a star of the vintage. It should drink well for 10-15 years. |

WA 98 (10/2014): Of the three Beckstoffer Vineyards, it’s pretty much a joyride as to which one readers may prefer. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane moves more toward the wet rock, blueberry, raspberry fruit spectrum, but still stays dark and foreboding, very concentrated and full-bodied. The great terroir comes through and the wine is distinctive, singular, opulent and rich. Another fabulous success from Paul Hobbs and one more showcase wine for this great vineyard. Anticipated maturity: now-2032. JS 94 (7/2015): Aromas of ripe blueberry, blackberry and mineral. Black currants too. Full body, silky tannins and bright acidity. Very intense and linear with loads of fruit that are held together with a solid tannin backbone. Better in 2017. VM 93 (10/2015): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is dark, plump and juicy, with plenty of near and medium term appeal. Silky, soft and open-knit, the 2012 Dr. Crane is a good example of the year. Drink this supple, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon over the next handful of years. In 2012, the 100% new French oak is evident, one of the clues the vintage is slightly lacking in concentration. Antonio Galloni. WS 92 (8/2016): Though tannic at points, this is notably complex and refined in texture and aromas, with a subtle mix of currant, anise, dried berry, cedary oak, tobacco and cigar box on the aftertaste. Drink now through 2028. 1,016 cases made. |

VM 94 (1/2018): The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is rich, voluptuous and racy, as wines from this site tend to be. Sweet red cherry, raspberry, spice, new leather and white chocolate infuse this expressive, mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon from Paul Hobbs. This has really come together nicely over the last year. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 95 (7/2019): Saturated red-ruby. Licorice, black cherry, red- and blackcurrant, sexy soil tones and violet on the nose; conveys a strong impression of site character. Densely packed, full and youthful, conveying strong inner-mouth lift but still a bit monolithic and in need of patience. The wine's inky dark fruit, spice and graphite flavors are firm but not at all hard or spiky. Made from vines picked on the late side, this big boy may not be as graceful as the 2010 but its firm tannic structure should ensure a long, slow evolution. And this classically dry Cabernet boasts excellent definition and inner-mouth tension. Give this wine some time in a decanter if you plan to open a bottle anytime soon. Stephen Tanzer. |

Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon |

VM 93 (1/2022): The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Coombsville) is a fabulous introduction to the range. This is the first vintage the Napa Valley Cabernet becomes a pure Coombsville AVA wine from the Nathan Coombs Estate. Dried herbs, coffee, chocolate, spice and new leather add layers of nuance to a core of dark-fleshed fruit. The 2019 is beautifully done. Dollops of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot round out the blend, with the Franc and PV very much in evidence. Antonio Galloni. JD 95 (5/2022): From the southern, cooler end of the valley, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville offers a vibrant, lively bouquet of blue fruits, sappy herbs, truffle, tobacco, and hints of gravelly earth. It brings plenty of richness on the palate and is medium to full-bodied, has nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's a beautiful, cooler-climate, textured, balanced Cabernet that can be enjoyed today or cellared for upwards of two decades. WA 92+ (5/2022): The second vintage of this wine, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville comes entirely from Hobbs's Nathan Coombs Estate. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot, it offers dark fruit notes of blackberry and blueberry, plus hints of graphite and cedar. Full-bodied and rich, it has enough soft, dusty tannins to make it a solid steakhouse option, while the finish is long and tinged with licorice. |

VM 98 (12/2017): The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Nathan Coombs Estate is on another level. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a site in Coombsville which is a cooler terroir in the southern part of the Valley and spent 20 months in all new French oak. Sporting an inky purple/blue color and incredible notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, damp earth and leafy herbs, it incredibly concentrated, opulent and decadent, yet always balanced and pure. It's a real “Wow” wine that's going to knock your socks off over the coming 2-3 decades. Antonio Galloni. |

|
WS 88 (7/2003): A rich, loamy, earthy streak runs through this currant-, herb- and olive- laced wine that's dense and concentrated, finishing with a strong earth and coffee ground finish. Some may find it too earthy and lacking in vibrant fruit. Best from 2004 through 2010. 522 cases made. WA 87-89 (8/2002): The dark ruby/purple-colored 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard (540 cases) is a firm-structured effort with blue and black fruit notes, medium body, sweet tannin, and a moderately long finish. It is an excellent offering from a vineyard on Pritchard Hill in eastern Napa. |

VM 92 (1/2022): The 2020 Chardonnay Ellen Lane Estate is bright and airy, with lovely aromatic presence to match its gracious personality. Orchard fruit, white flowers, mint and orange peel are all nicely lifted. This is the last vintage for the Ellen Lane at Paul Hobbs. Antonio Galloni. |

George Menini Chardonnay |
$65 |

|
VM 92 (1/2022): The 2020 Chardonnay George Menini Estate is a new wine in this range. It emerges from the 38-acre parcel in the Russian River that was once an apple orchard, as many ranches here were. In this tasting, the Menini stands out for its creaminess and texture. Dried apricot, chamomile, dried flowers, orange peel and spice build into the layered finish. This is a strong debut, especially considering the challenging vintage. Antonio Galloni. JD 95 (8/2022): The 2020 Chardonnay George Menini Estate is lifted with fresh tarragon, flint, and candied green apple. The palate is all about its chalky mineral texture and vibrant energy. Not to confuse this with losing balance or feeling underripe, it has plenty of fruit, with lemon confit, fresh green apple, and a touch of warming baking spice. Allow another year or two in cellar and drink 2023-2034. WA 95 (10/2023): The 2020 Chardonnay George Menini Estate is the first iteration of this single-vineyard wine from Paul Hobbs, from a vineyard that he recently purchased. Previously an apple orchard, it was planted to 39 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2015, mostly with heritage selections like Wente and Hudson. The vines are dry farmed in classic Goldridge soils. "The newer vineyards that I purchase are in cooler pockets, so I don't have to acidulate," Hobbs explains. "It has become a hallmark in the quest for vineyards, and the need to dry farm." Matured for 15 months in 30% new oak, it has very pretty scents of white peach, honey, crushed almonds and flint. The light-bodied palate is silky with expansive flavors foiled by focused acidity, and it finishes with a touch of anchoring textural grip. 491 cases produced. |

Richard Dinner Vyd. Chardonnay |

|
VM 93 (8/2023): The 2021 Chardonnay Richard Dinner Vineyard is a very pretty, expressive wine. Savory, earthy and mineral notes are front and center, while the fruit is more pushed back into the background. This nuanced, phenolic Chardonnay has plenty of character, but it is also pretty soft for this bottling. Antonio Galloni. WA 96+ (10/2023): The 2021 Chardonnay Richard Dinner Vineyard was matured in 37% new French oak for nine months. It opens slowly as it spends time in the glass and will benefit from additional bottle time or a decant. Apricot, peach and honey are accented by touches of flint and mushroom, and the light-bodied palate is highly concentrated yet racy. It has pure, expressive flavors, shimmery mineral character and a very long, lively finish. |
